VERY RARE PRE-1840 LONDON HANDSTRUCK "1" ON NEWSPAPER WRAPPER SENT FROM WALES TO ESSEX; May 1813 wrapper from "CARMARTHEN/236" (fair lined mileage on the front) to Walthamstow with manuscript "Lord Cawdor" heading and no charge except a very fine very rare London Handstruck "1" (Lombard Street; Jay L570 - only recorded for 1809) for the 1d Local Post newspaper rate. Exceptional item; from 1790 to 1825 the mere endorsement of the name of a Peer or M.P. on newspaper wrappers enabled them to pass free of postage (except for local post rates). Only a handful of pre-1840 London Handstruck "1" marks have been recorded. Unique thus? PHOTO - see page 9. £200

THE VERY RARE RED CURVED-FRAME "Hamburg paid" MARK ON COVER EX RUSSIA TO PORTUGAL; Fine 15 June 1823 EL (part printed) from "St. Petersburg" to "Lisbon" charged "280 [reis]" on arrival in Portugal but having a mostly very fine (and rare) red curved-frame "Hamburg paid" mark (Jay L1081; only recorded for 1822-3) nicely placed on the front along with a very fine oval-framed Lisbon transit d.s. RARE PAIR OF COVER/CORK "SHIP LETTER" COVERS TO SCOTLAND WITH "IRELAND" BACKSTAMPS; Remarkable 4 Sept. 1786 & 4 Jan. 1789 pair of ELs (the arrival dates) from Cove harbour (ship about to land) and Madeira having a very fine "COVE/SHIP LE" mark (stained address side) or fair "CORK/SHIP LETTER" on the front; addressed to Ayr "Via Donahadee" and to Edinburgh and so having Dublin Bishop Marks but having fine and poor watery black "IRELAND" marks (40mm) that may both have been struck in Belfast. RARE VERY FINE GIANT RED LONDON "IRELAND" MARK ON COVER; 7 July 1804 E from Dublin charged "1/-" to London with a very fine giant (68mm) red London "IRELAND" (fold between two letters) nicely placed on the front matching the very fine red "F"-code London arrival c.d.s. on the flap. THE LONDON 57mm RED "IRELAND" MARKS - INC."TOO LATE" & SUNDAY (2; INC."CROWN") USAGES; 1804/7 Es from Dublin to London all with mainly very fine 57mm red London IRELAND marks on the front; 1804/7 pair each with matching London "S"-code (for Sunday) c.d.s.'s (16 Dec. 1804 & 19 Apr. 1807 - latter also with rate-change & v. fine red London "Crown") - the "S/IRELAND" marks had fallen out of use by then - plus 1805 regular use and 1807 example slightly overstruck by a crossed through black encircled Dublin "POST/PAID/D" (an unpaid double letter!) with a mainly fine Dublin "TOO LATE" alongside.
