THE 1st OPIUM WAR - EARLY COVER FROM MACAO WITH DETAILS OF BRITISH WARSHIPS THERE, ETC.; 11 Feb. 1840 EL (massively long contents but only a single sheet) to Scotland unusually endorsed "P Francis from China" above the address charged "1/4" with a very fine !LIVERPOOL/SHIP LETTER" and Edinburgh transit c.d.s. (8 June) on the reverse. Fascinating contents from a well-connected British merchant in Macao bemoaning the impasse caused by the Chinese attempts to stop all British trade; "...what a bad mess we are in here & heaven knows how we are to get out of it. I hope to see the Admiral & his Squadron here ere long to set about a settlement of this intricate question. Beat them...we must - convinc.e them of our power we also must...never again to get within the grasp of a despotic & capricious Govt. like this, but to fix the seat of our trade where the hoards of the [Chinese] Empire never again can molest us...We have only two Men of War here just now; the Volage, 28 guns, & Hyacinth, 18 [guns]...Her Captain Warren is a very nice fellow...he constantly dines with me...Admiral [Maitland] will be here shortly...If Govt. don't take up the question with vigour and promptly, every respectable man will leave China, for no one will continue tacitly to submit to injury & insult every day!!!". NAGASAKI - UNIQUE (?) EARLY COVER TO HOLLAND VIA SHANGHAI, HONG KONG & FRANCE WITH DIAMOND "GB/1F224/10c" MARK; Very fine 30 Nov. 1863 EL (in Dutch) sent unpaid from "Nagasaki" to "Leyden via Marseille" charged "55" on arrival with a fine black "SHANGHAE/C" c.d.s. (9 Dec.) and fine blue "HONG KONG/C" c.d.s. on the flaps, along with "LEIDEN" arrival marks (27 Jan. 1864), but also having a mainly very fine black(?) diamond-framed "GB/1F224/10c" Accountancy Mark (used on mail from "Foreign countries of Asia" - as opposed to mail from British Possessions in Asia such as Hong Kong, for which an extra 40c was credited) on the front. There is also a mainly fine red 2-ring "POSS. ANG. V. SUEZ/A MARSEILLE H" c.d.s. on the front. Salles records this Accountancy mark (Fig. 1.901) on mail from Shanghai or Yokohama to France, but this example is on a cover from Nagasaki (where the British Postal Agency opened in 1860, although without any postal mark until 1866), and the colours of the backstamps seem to suggest that this "GB/1F224/10c" mark was applied at the Shanghai P.O. rather than at Hong Kong. It is known that two examples of this handstamp were issued in 1861 to Hong Kong, so one could perhaps have been sent on to the Shanghai P.O. but been very little used there? In either case this is one of only a handful of Nagasaki covers recorded dated prior to 1876 (see Webb, p.290), and it appears to be unique with the Accountancy Mark, and unique being addressed to Holland rather than to G.B. or France. Highly Important Exhibition Item. PHOTO - see page 1. £1,500
1037
NAGASAKI - VERY RARE EARLY COVER TO HOLLAND VIA FRENCH P.O. IN SHANGHAI; Very fine 1 Aug. 1864 EL (in Dutch) sent unpaid from "Nagasaki" to "Leyden, Holland via Marseille" and separately endorsed "Per Mess[ageries]. Imp[eriales]. Packet" and charged "50" on arrival with a mainly very fine black 2-ring "SHANGHAI/BAU FRANCAIS" c.d.s. (16 Aug.) on the front; there are backstamps of the "MARSEILLE A PARIS(?)" T.P.O. & "LEIDEN" (8 Oct.). This matching cover to that in the previous lot is an exceptionally early cover from Nagasaki (where the British Postal Agency opened in 1860, although without any postal mark until 1866) and one of only a handful of Nagasaki covers recorded dated prior to 1876 (see Webb, p.290); it appears to be unique being routed via the French P.O. in Shanghai to Holland rather than to G.B. or France. Important Exhibition Item. PHOTO - see page 2. £750
