EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNT OF THE BATTLE OF FIRKET - 12-PAGE LETTER PLUS BATTLEFIELD PLAN; Remarkable 9 June 1896 letter (no env.) with a very detailed account of this annihilation (two days earlier) of the Mahdi's troops by Kitchener's forces along with a partly inked pencil sketch of the lines of battle; "The Dervishes, about 3,000 strong, held the village of Firket 15 miles off. We were shown a map of the place (which I copy & send and which is a correct one)...I was told off to lead the brigade during the march...The night march I found most trying; we crept along the whole night stumbling over the rocks...we saw a volley from the hill A.; this we knew was from the Camel Corps...An Egyptian battery was here dropping shells into the village...the bullets ...began to knock up the dust around us and we had our first man hit...Lots of me were bowled over and some of the horses in the Great Man's staff...we saw the dervishes quit the hill hurriedly, men & horses tumbling over right & left (we buried nearly 200 here)...They certainly fought desperately & were nearly all killed...I got about 4 section volleys into them& rolled a good many over...When we got to the village we fixed bayonets & dashed in...driving the men out of the houses and killing most of them...We were now sent to clear the village of loot...I got an old Egyptian Army drum which the Mahdi had taken at Khartoum, also the spears, banner & coat of an Emir we bowled over...I came back at 12.45 [p.m.] & was glad to find a nice breakfast ready in our bivouac..."! An exceptionally graphic account of an important Battle in this Mahdist War. [See also next lot.] PHOTO - see page 136. £200

(18 June) and matching small boxed "T" On the front along with a superb London h.s. "21/2D/F.B/A" charge-mark. The contents relate to the previous lot; "I hope you got the long letter I wrote the other day all about our little fight....I had to superintend burying the dead. The dervishes must have been under a frightful fire' many bodies riddled with bullets. Peculiar how soon one gets accustomed to the seamy side of war. I now no longer look on a dead black with more notice tha I a dead rat. We must have killed a lot; they keep on finding bodies everywhere." A fine pair to the previous lot. PHOTO - see page 17. £150
