THE VERY RARE CHELTENHAM SPOON ON 1d RED 'STARS' COVER; Fine 23 Nov. 1857 env. to Bath franked by 1d Red 'Stars' (TL; some cut perfs.) tied by a mainly very fine strike of the very rare "CHELTENHAM/177" Spoon Duplex with code "D" at foot and rare year in full ("1857"). Believed to be the earliest known date for this famously rare mark that was only in use for a couple of months in 1857/8. Plus Sept. 1857 env. to the same address with 1d Reds (2) tied by the "CHELTENHAM/177" Sideways Duplex. Superb Exhibition Item. (established firm in Lima) to Glasgow "Via Panama" charged "3/4" (Columbia 2s-1d Packet rate + 1s-3d Inland) with a mainly fine oily-green Falmouth "COLUMBIA" Fleuron (Rob. FP11; the only example recorded by him and Tabeart) on the top flap (slightly overstruck by Glasgow arrival d.s. of 21 Feb. 1839) and matching the similarly oily-green very fine boxed Falmouth "1/2" Scottish Mail Tax mark on the front. Stanmore, London (small repair at top, dusting & minor edge wear) addressed to "Commander C.E. Buckle R.N., H.M.S. Frolic, Singapore, China Station" and endorsed "via Brindisi" franked by GB 1/- green Pl.7 AD plus single 6d. grey KC and a marginal pair LC-LD Pl.12 tied by the rare low number "42B" numeral cancel for the scarce 2/6d prepaid rate for letters over 1/2oz; Parmenter rates this Stanmore "42/B" cancel as "very rare" on cover. Backstamped with a red Singapore d.s. This letter had to be sent on to Hong Kong as HMS Frolic had already moved there. Most unusual franking and cancellation for mail to the Far East. (fine scarce 1800 "FREE" at foot 'Apple' type - with scarce "CAMBRIDGE" - complaints ref. local charge and 6d Late Fees), other marks inc.1800 SALISBURY (toning; from an actor seeking help with journey to Jersey!), BIRMINGHAM (c.d.s.; 1808 wrapper only), etc. The local trio ref. RARE FREE FRANK ALLOWED THOUGH HEADED "H.M.S. WARRIOR AT SEA" & POSTED FROM DEAL; Remarkable 7/9 Nov. 1813 E franked to Tunbridge by "[Viscount] Torrington" and most exceptionally headed from "H.M.S. Warrior at Sea" though posted two days later at "DEAL" (fair mileage c.d.s. on the front). We cannot recall having seen a free frank headed from a ship rather than from a port before. Freeling" signature (abuse of privilege; letter from someone else on private business!) and v. fine black "ANGLETERRE" and London crowned FREE c.d.s., and 1823 v. fine rare "O.H.M.S./Francis Freeling" imprint on address side with fair red "ANGLETERRE" - the latter with printed contents ref. a Ship Letter held in London awaiting 18s-1d postage to be paid! RARE P.O. "FREE./F. FREELING/RETURNED LETTER OFFICE" WRAPPER FOR AN UNPAID COVER TO U.S.; Remarkable 10 Aug. 1820 EL from the G.P.O. in London with printed contents about mail to the U.S. having to be prepaid and so originally returning a letter (no longer present) from a Nottingham firm to New York (filing note); the address-panel has the rare imprint for "O.H.M.S./Free./F. Freeling./Returned Letter Office." with a fine crowned "FREE" c.d.s. The contents give good detail of those countries to which mail must be prepaid as they are not "within His Majesty's Dominions"! Very few examples known. [A similar 1829 example in Cavendish's 'Thomson' auction, Mar. 2012, lot 699, realised £552.] PHOTO - see page 9. £300

RARE "LONDON COMMITTEE FOR RELIEF OF DISTRESSED MANUFACTURERS" IMPRINT "F. FREELING" FREE FRANK; Fine 28 Dec. 1826 EL with printed lengthy contents addressed to Lincolnshire having the "London Committee for Relief of Distressed/Manufacturers." heading and "F. FREELING." imprint on the address panel and a fair red London crowned "FREE" c.d.s. The contents relate mainly to Stockport and Lancashire and detail privations due to unemployment - the result of increasing mechanisation. "HOUSE OF LORDS" - THE VERY RARE "Free,/F. FREELING" DESIGN - PRECURSOR OF THE 1840 ENVELOPES; Fine 3 Jan. 1828 EL with bold printed "HOUSE OF LORDS" heading and "Free,/F. FREELING" imprint at foot addressed (partly printed; very slight edge-wear mainly folded under) to "The Churchwardens and Overseers of the Parish of [Painswick, Gloucester]" entirely without authorising signature. Very rare; the first example of this kind of "HOUSE OF LORDS" wrapper that we can recall having seen, which is so clearly an early precursor of the 1840 Parliamentary Envelopes. Exhibition Item. RARE PAIR OF COVERS FRANKED TO ITALY VIA FRANCE - ONE DISINFECTED; Jan./Feb. 1833 pair of ELs written and franked by Col. "J. Drinkwater" to his brother (abuse of privilege being on personal business - the sender was the Comptroller of Army Accounts and so one of only a few officials who could frank mail to Europe) headed from London to Naples (the first with vinegar stains and chisel-slits of disinfection, the other not obviously disinfected); each with London inland mail crowned "FREE" c.d.s.'s but also with transit "ANGLETERRE" marks "PONT DE/BEAUVOISIN" and Genoa/Naples marks. FREELING" DESIGN - PRECURSOR OF THE 1840 ENVELOPES; Very fine Aug. 1834 E (originally for "Poor Returns" - filing note) franked from London to Basingstoke with printed "HOUSE OF COMMONS" heading and printed "FREE./F. RARE HANDSTRUCK "free/F. Freeling" MARK ON OFFICIAL "L.T.R." FREE COVER; Very fine 22 Dec. 1835 E (on blued paper) sent from London to Marlborough with "O.H.M.S./L[and]. T[ax]. R[eturn]." heading and part printed address but most exceptionally also with a mainly fine strike of the rare Handstruck "free/F. Freeling" authorisation mark and so sent free with a fair red crowned London "FREE" c.d.s. "WHITE HORSE, FETTER LANE" PARCEL RECEIPT WITH LETTER MENTIONING THE PARCEL; 17 Feb. 1842 El cash-paid from "WYMONDHAM" (Norfolk) to London with a matching brown "WHITE HORSE, FETTER LANE" Parcel receipt (advertising various Railway/coach services to Norfolk etc.) endorsed as having been charged 2s-4d "Carriage/Porterage"; plus separate EL (same date and endorsement as the receipt) mentioning this very parcel; "We hope you received the parcel we sent you last night" (of legal papers); the writer got the date wrong (1841) and the Wymondham c.d.s. has "1824" in error for 1842!
