SCARCE VALENTINE CONTAINING A RING: 1863 (13 Feb) env from Kingstown to Pimlico bearing a LC14 1d HL. An unused fancy embossed envelope and a delightful valentine with pierced silver borders and garlands together with a gilt metal ring. The coded message "HTE" (How Tom Eleanor ?) and "AIUERQ" (AQUIRE ?) inside. The valentine and ring were placed inside the embossed env and then all was placed into the addressed env and sent. Both envs have impressions of the ring. A true romantic item. PHOTO - see page 51. £260

"DRAYTON" (MIDDX.) - BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN LETTER TO "COUNTESSE OF WARWICKE"; Fine 1 June 1593 EL (part blank flap replaced) in an astonishingly clear hand sent "From Drayton " (Middx.), signed by "George Carey" (later the Baron Hunsdon; see DNB) and addressed "To the right honorable the Countesse of Warwicke geve theis." (presumably in London) sent by private means ("...theis bearers my servantes Charles and William Clough") regarding a land dispute. CIVIL WAR - PARLIAMENTARY LETTER FROM "[SHIP] MERCURY" REF. CAPTAINS' ARREST, ETC.: 17 Aug. 1642 letter (no wrapper but directed "To the house or any other[?] attending this House or his Deputy. to be conveyed to the Earle of Warwick") written by "Jo[hn] Browne, Cleric Parliamentor" (see DNB; c.1608-91; Clerk of the Parliaments from 1638) on board the ship ''Mercury'' ordering the Earl of Warwick, Lord Admiral, to arrest the captains of two ships on guard duty off the coast of Ireland who ''have lately departed that Charge whereby they have opposed his Mats. good subjects in that Kingdome to create danger in this tyme of Rebellion''. Plus 27 July 1642 letter (no wrapper; ?from Kings Lynn) from "Hamon l'Estrange" (1583-1654; see DNB) petitioning the Earl of Manchester on behalf of two men summoned to appear before Parliament on a different matter. CIVIL WAR LETTER TO LORD FAIRFAX: AT YORK:1644 (2 Jan) EL from Aston? addressed "For the right Hono(ble) the/Lord Fairfax/in his Lords absence to the/Commander in cheefe/humbly present this/in Yorke" and signed by Sir Francis Fane second son of the 1st Earl of Westmorland. The letter is effected by damp and foxing but an interesting item Also 1883 (8 Aug) piece from "The Derby Mercury" with a full transcript of the letter which was then at Melbourne Hall. Rare example of an overseas letter sent during the English Civil War which caused severe disruption to normal P.O services. £150

CIVIL WAR PERIOD LETTER SENT BY "CARRIER" FROM "WIMBORNE" TO LONDON; 17 Sept. 1649 EL (some wear; red wax seal) from "Wimborne" addressed "For his most worthy friend Mr. Robert Langford at Grays Inne, London" signed by "Will Kidgett"; with interesting contents about various sums of cash (totalling £175) sent by carrier; "This is the 3d voyage of ye Carrier since your receipt of ye £25. I delivered him at his next [journey] £50 for which he brought me a receipt..." Good evidence that road transport had become secure enough for cash transits (albeit broken down over several trips) a few months after the King was beheaded and during Cromwell's Irish campaign. THE VERY RARE 1654 CROMWELLIAN "ORDINANCE TOUCHING THE OFFICE OF Poftage of Letters" - ORIGINAL BLACK LETTER ACT; Remarkable and important 2 Sept. 1654 Cromwellian Ordinance (15pp., album-page size; some slight toning and slight edge wear but complete and attractive) issued by "Henry Scovell, Clerk of the Council" giving further authority to John Manley to run the Post Office and detailing not only the new inland Postal Rates but also authorising (for the first time) Free Mail for M.P.s and Government officers. We cannot recall having seen another example of this very early Post Office ordinance apart from the second example in Michael Jackson's Large Gold Medal exhibit; much rarer than the 1656/7 P. O. THE FIRST (CROMWELLIAN) POST OFFICE ACT - "AN ACT/FOR THE/SETLING/OF THE/POSTAGE/OF ENGLAND/SCOTLAND and IRELAND": 1656/7 'black letter' Act consisting of 8pp. measuring 10" x 61/2" (disbound with minor toning but fits an album-page and attractive) passed by the Cromwellian Parliament to confirm the state postal monopoly and to fix Postal Rates. One of the major documents of British Postal History containing great detail on the whole postal system towards the end of the Commonwealth period. [A similar example of this Act realised £1,150 in Cavendish's Nov. 2001 auction.] PHOTO - see above. £500

EARLY RESTORATION PERIOD LETTER FROM DERBY REF. PAYING OFF THE CROMWELLIAN ARMY; FINE 12 Oct. 1660 EL (typed transcript) from "Markeaton" (near Derby; ex the High Sheriff of Derbyshire), to "Col. Edward King, a Commissioner for Disbanding the Army [at York]"; he advises that some £3,000 (a fortune in those days) would be available for distribution the next week. The postscript is interesting; "The certainty of this messenger's delivery hereof & ye uncertainty of your return from Yorke into Lincolnshire, and ye feare of miscarriage of uncertaine messengers, hath occasioned some delay of this answer...". Rare and unusual item sent by special messenger in the very early days after the Restoration of the monarchy in England. PHOTO - see page 171. £300

HENRY BISHOP's ORIGINAL RECEIPT FOR PART OF HIS ANNUAL "RENT" AS "FARMER OF THE POST OFFICE"; Highly significant 4 July 1662 receipt (fine - except for a few minor creases - and album-page size; 168mm x 216mm) for £462-10s-0d signed by "[Sir] Will[iam]. Morice" (1602-76; one of King Charles II's two "Principal Secretaries of State") "Rec[eive]d....of Henry Bishopp Esqr., Farmer of the Post Office, in part of the rent thereof due to his Maj[es]tie. for one quarter of a year...payable unto me quarterly by lres patent dated the first day of December 1660...". Remarkable item being the receipt for part of Henry Bishop's rent of the Post Office that lasted from 1660 to 1663. Bishop paid £21,500 per year in exchange for all the income he could obtain from running the Post Office in Britain, and the deal involved him paying £1,850 each year to each of the King;s Principal Secretaries. Bishop's reforms of the P.O. included the introduction of the world's first datestamp - the 'Bishop Mark' on 19 Jan. 1661. Unique item from Henry Bishop's personal papers.
