RARE FRAMED "CANNOT BE SENT/EXCEEDS 1/2 OZ." ON FAILED MILITARY CONCESSION COVER TO MALTA; 26 May 1880 env. (some faults) from Glasgow to the "10th Brigade, Royal Artillery, Malta" with 1/2d Rose-Red, 2 1/2d Rosy-Mauve (defective) and 1d Venetian Reds (2) all tied by Glasgow Duplexes; this contravened the 1/2 oz. limit for a soldier's concession consequently with two strikes of the very rare Glasgow framed "CANNOT BE SENT/EXCEEDS 1/2 OZ." (both subsequently deleted prior to re-posting with the additional 3d for the 5d double UPU rate). Rare Scottish marking and an important disallowed military concession cover. FRANCE- 1879 ATTEMPTED USE OF BRITISH STAMPS ON COVER FROM DUNKIRK; 3 Dec. 1879 env. (faint vertical crease) with 1d Red Pair (Pl.220) and 1/2d Rose-Red (Pl.13) - all initially uncancelled but with manuscript line and "0" marking to indicate invalidity as per UPU regulations - to London with Dunkirk c.d.s at upper left and matching h.s. "T" in triangle. In the London Foreign Branch the stamps were cancelled and tied by three strikes of the h.s. "2d" marking, having a matching London "AA/F.B/DE 4/1879" c.d.s alongside; subsequently charged "2 1/2" in manuscript for the remainder of the deficiency. Extremely unusual and possibly unique example of a disallowed British franking. PHOTO - see page 3. £300

EXCEPTIONAL CORNER MARGINAL 10d PAIR USED WITH MARGINAL 1/- ON LARGE PART COVER; 5 June 1851 front (somewhat reduced at left) with large flap sent from "LISKEARD" (v. fine blue c.d.s. on flap) to Launceston (both in Cornwall) franked for an exceptionally high weight inland letter-rate (2s-8d, suggesting a weight of 16 ounces!) by a spectacular top left corner marginal pair of 10d Brown (huge selvedge margins top and left, clear at right, one clear and the other just shaved at foot; stain mark between the stamps clear of designs at foot and slight wrinkles due to silk threads in each stamp) and a single right marginal 1/- Green with 4 clear margins (full selvedge at right) all tied by mainly fine Liskeard "403" Numerals. Amazing as these stamps are so seldom found with clear margins, and very rarely with selvedge. [Ex Charless Hahn.] PHOTO - see page 3. £300
