COBDEN RICHARD: (1804-1865) British Radical and Liberal Statesman, associated with John Bright in the formation of the Anti-Corn Law League. A.L.S., R Cobden, four pages, 8vo, Midhurst, 22nd November 1863, to Henry Ashworth ('My dear Friend'), marked Private. Cobden announces 'If there had been the prospect of an early marriage in my family I should not have allowed you to hear it through an indirect channel' and continues 'It is true that Katie & a young man our next neighbour have taken matters into their own hands & engaged themselves à l'Anglaise. But it is in the eyes of their seniors a premature step.' Cobden further provides his opinions on the young man ('he is unexceptionable...his character is rare & estimable') and adds 'I told him & his father that a business or profession was, in my judgment, quite indispensable, for that unless a man filled a place in the world & did some work, there was little prospect of happiness or respectability. They both professed the same view, & he is now entered for the Bar. But this is a lengthy process, taking three years for completion. I am not quite sure that it is desirable for the female to make long engagements however beneficial it may be to the other sex.' He further informs his correspondent that 'Katie had been a little perplexed & harassed by the ordeal of more than one other affair in which insusceptible youths had fallen in love with her; & I suspect that this impelled her to the step (of which under similar circumstances Shakespeare's Juliet sets an example) of engaging herself to her next neighbour whom she had known from her childhood...One of the cases referred to was that of the son of a good friend of ours in Manchester about which I will not write more than to say how much I have been pained by its attendant incidents. I should have preferred to see the dear girl united to a prosperous young man of business in Lancashire. But these affairs instead of following the rule of reason or logic contrive generally to go by the "rule of contrary"'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Cobden. Together with a second A.L.S., Ricd. Cobden, two pages, 8vo, London, 20th January 1850, to Henry Ashworth ('My dear Friend').
