GULLY JOHN: (1783-1863) English Boxer, Sportsman and Politician. Signed Free Front envelope panel, addressed in his hand to Thomas Clift at the Magpie & Stumps, Fetter Lane, London and dated Pontefract, 27th September 1835 in his hand. Signed ('J Gully') in the lower left corner. Very slightly irregularly neatly trimmed and with light age wear, G £80 - 100
The Magpie & Stumps public house is situated opposite the Old Bailey and was famous for serving execution breakfasts up until 1868 when mass public hangings were stopped.

WILLARD JESS: (1881-1968) American World Heavyweight Boxing Champion 1915-19. Blue fountain pen ink signature ('Yours truly, Jess Willard') on a slim oblong 8vo piece. Willard has added his address in Glendale, California, and the date, 19th February 1939, in his hand beneath his signature. Some light age wear and creasing, just touching the very conclusion of the signature, G £100 - 150

DEMPSEY JACK: (1895-1983) American Boxer, World Heavyweight Champion 1919-26. An exceptional, vintage signed and inscribed 7.5 x 9.5 photograph of the young Manassa Mauler standing in a three quarter length pose wearing a dapper suit, waistcoat and with a cap upon his head. Photograph by Woodbury of Los Angeles. Signed in dark fountain pen ink across a light area of the background, 'To my friend Charlie Quinn, with Sincerest Best Wishes From Jack Dempsey, World's Champion'. Signed photographs of Dempsey from this early stage of his career, as World Champion, are rare. Some light age wear and slight surface and corner creasing, G £200 - 300

HEARNS THOMAS (1958- ) American Boxer, the first in history to win five world titles in five different divisions & HAGLER MARVELOUS MARVIN (1954- ) American Boxer, World Middleweight Champion 1980-87. A red Lonsdale boxing glove individually signed by both Hearns and Hagler, each with their names alone in bold black inks. VG £100 - 150
Hearns and Hagler fought each other for the World Middleweight Championship on 15th April 1985 in a bout (billed as 'The War') which is considered by many to be one of the finest boxing matches in history, despite only lasting three rounds. Hagler proved victorious and the win cemented his legacy as one of the greatest middleweights of all time.

FOOTBALL: George Best (1946-2005) Northern Ireland & Manchester United Footballer. A hardback edition of George Best's Soccer Annual No. 2, First edition published by Pelham Books Ltd., London, 1969. Signed by Best to a full photo page inside showing him in a relaxed half length pose with his arms folded. Signed with his name alone in red ink to a light area with a slightly hurried signature. Another page of the book features a team photo of Manchester United with the European Cup, 1968, and is signed by six players. Accompanied by the dust wrapper (tears and age wear). GRACE W. G.: (1848-1915) English Cricketer. Vintage signed 17.5 x 22 photogravure by artist Archibald Stuart-Wortley, the image depicting Grace standing in a full length pose, with his cricket bat slightly raised, at the crease at Lord's Ground. Grace wears his MCC cap and the old tennis court can be seen in the background. Printed in Berlin and published by Messrs. Manson, Swann and Morgan of Newcastle upon Tyne, 1st May 1891. Signed by Grace in pencil with his name alone to the lower border and also signed in pencil by the artist A. Stuart Wortley (his signature extremely weak and barely visible) alongside a remarque of a cricket ball. Some extensive overall age wear and scuffing to the image and with evidence of previous tears (professionally repaired to the verso). Grace's signature is a touch light, although perfectly legible. Archibald Stuart-Wortley (1849-1905) Portrait Painter, a pupil of Millais. The present photogravure was reproduced in a limited edition of 200 from a large oil painting by Stuart-Wortley which was commissioned by the MCC in 1888-90 and funded by subscriptions.

BRADMAN DON: (1908-2001) Australian Cricketer. T.L.S., Don Bradman, one page, 4to, Kensington Park, South Australia, 26th July 1979, to John Simmons. Bradman sends his correspondent a signed photograph (still present) and explains, 'This was taken going out to practice at Lords during my last tour.' He continues 'You have asked me the question "what was my greatest moment", and naturally I take this to mean in relation to my cricketing career...The making of the world's record test score (at that time) during my 1930 trip was of course a great moment, although I have constantly stated that my innings of 254 at Lords was, technically, better. However, in retrospect, in terms of personal satisfaction on behalf of my team and the game, as well as my own part in it, I think the best moment was at Leeds in 1948 when our team won the test on the last day with a score of over 400 which had never been achieved by any other side in history. That was a performance which nobody predicted and confounded all the critics. My own part in it was substantial and this, naturally, contributed to my satisfaction.' LIDDELL ERIC: (1902-1945) Scottish Athlete & Missionary, Olympic Gold medallist. Liddell is one of the main subjects of the 1981 film Chariots of Fire. Vintage signed postcard photograph of Liddell in a head and shoulders pose. Signed ('Eric H Liddell') with his name alone in fountain pen ink to the image. The signature runs across a somewhat darker area of the image although is reasonably legible. Autographs of Liddell are rare in any form. VG £150 - 200

CAMPBELL MALCOLM: (1885-1948) British Land & Water Speed Record Holder. T.L.S., M. Campbell, two pages, South Kensington, London, 6th January 1926, to M. Beachcroft ('Dear Bro. Beachcroft') on the attractive printed stationery of Malcolm Campbell Automobiles and featuring a small illustration of the Blue Bird. Campbell thanks his correspondent for their letters and refers to some notices of Lodge meetings having gone astray in the post ('…so many letters have been lost in the past that I have had to complain very seriously to the Postmaster General…') although adding that he is making arrangements to attend a Meeting on 13th January, 'and I shall be bringing my father-in-law, Major Whittall, with me. I presume that a dinner jacket will suffice - if not, will you kindly let me know whether evening dress means full dress.' In concluding Campbell states that he has not subscribed to any charity and proposes sending a cheque for £10 'for you to devote to any charity which you think most suitable, or would it be better to forward this amount to the Worshipful Master of the Old Uppingham Lodge.' In a holograph postscript, signed with his initials MC, Campbell writes, in full, 'My Father in law has just rung me up on the telephone & told me he has seen you today. I am afraid I am a very bad mason but I never seem to get a spare moment for anything: actually by the time I get home I have worked between 11 & 12 hours a day.' Beachcroft ('Dear Brother Beachcroft') on the attractive printed stationery of Malcolm Campbell Automobiles and featuring a small illustration of the Blue Bird. Campbell thanks his correspondent for their letter and adds 'I am very glad that you have not formed the opinion that I am a "bad mason" ', continuing 'Things seem to be getting worse instead of better, as every night I seem to be leaving business later than ever.' Campbell further encloses a cheque (no longer present) for £10.10.0 made payable to the Masonic Hospital and Nursing Home, remarking 'I am pleased to note that even this small subscription will be a welcome contribution. I sincerely hope that this will enable W. M. How to bring the total to 100 gns. If he is unable to do this I will be prepared to assist still further, as I feel that I have so far done nothing in this connection since I have been a mason.' CAMPBELL DONALD: (1921-1967) British Car & Motorboat Racer, World Land and Water Speed Record Holder in the 1950s and 1960s. A.L.S., Donald Campbell, one page, 4to, Coniston, Lancashire, 10th August 1949, to Mr. Daniels. Campbell thanks his correspondent for some photographs 'of Blue Bird & her crew' taken by Mr. Abell,
and commenting 'they were particularly appreciated as we have had little time to take any ourselves.' Campbell further remarks 'I have nothing but the highest praise for the manner, from our point of view, in which Mr. Abell conducted a task made more trying by most apalling (sic) weather conditions over a prolonged period: the cordiall (sic) relations that existed between yourselves and the team were most gratifying.' Holograph letters of Campbell are scarce and those, such as the present example, mentioning Blue Bird are desirable. Some light age wear at the edges of the folds, just affecting one letter of the signature, G £200 - 300
Campbell began his speed record attempts in the summer of 1949, at the time of the present letter, using his father's old boat Bluebird K4. His initial attempts that summer were unsuccessful, although he did come close to raising his father's existing record. The team returned to Coniston Water, Lancashire in 1950 for further trials.
