The partially printed cheque is drawn on the California Bank and made payable to American Pool Corporation for the sum of $25. Signed by Flynn in bold dark fountain pen ink, his signature unaffected by the perforated bank cancellation. Matted in red and black at the centre of two photographs of Flynn in different poses and framed in a plain black wooden frame to an overall size of 13.5 x 29. VG £100 - 150

Vintage signed 4 x 6 postcard photograph of Clift seated in a half length pose in costume as John Wickliff Shawnessey from the 1957 American Civil War drama film Raintree County in which he starred alongside Elizabeth Taylor. Signed ('Montgomery Clift') in blue fountain pen ink to the base of the image, largely across a darker area. About EX £200 - 300

ROMERO CESAR: (1907-1994) American Actor. Selection of eleven different vintage signed 8 x 10 photographs of Romero, each of the images showing him in scenes from various films including Happy Go Lovely (alongside Vera-Ellen), Coney Island etc. All are signed in fountain pen inks, most with his name alone, and largely to clear areas of the images. One is inscribed and a couple have weaker contrast. Together with a further sixteen vintage unsigned 8 x 10 photographs and slightly smaller of Romero, again largely in scenes from various films including Diamond Jim, Carnival in Costa Rica, The Beautiful Blonde from Bashful Bend etc. Some light overall age wear, and a few with heavier creases and tape stains etc. FR to generally G, 27. £80 - 100

Vintage signed and inscribed 10 x 8 photograph of Mason in a head and shoulders pose in costume as Johnny McQueen in a scene from Carol Reed's film noir Odd Man Out (1947). Signed by Mason in bold black fountain pen ink across a light area at the head of the image. A few slight corner creases, otherwise VG £80 - 100

BURTON RICHARD: (1925-1984) Welsh Actor. A printed small 4to Playbill theatre programme for a performance of Legend of Lovers at the Plymouth Theatre, December 1951/January 1952, signed by Burton with his name alone in blue ink to a clear area of the front cover featuring an image of the actor and actress Dorothy McGuire together in a scene from the play. BURTON RICHARD: (1925-1984) Welsh Actor. T.L.S., Richard Burton, one page, 8vo, n.p., 29th May 1954, to [Patrick] Heyworth. Burton thanks his correspondent for having sent him an advance proof of Tyrone Guthrie's New Stratford Shakespeare and continues 'While I would like very much to cooperate with you in the matter of my opinion of the work, unfortunately my time for the next few months leaves me little opportunity to read the book as carefully as I should desire. We leave tonight on a north of England tour and immediately upon our return depart for a Continental tour….then, I must report to California for another film.' Together with a small selection of other T.Ls.S. and A.Ls.S. by various other actors and writers, all also to Patrick Heyworth and some with interesting content, comprising Michael Redgrave ('Apart from one very typical Guthrie-ism in the Introduction about Shakespeare the "shrewd and businesslike craftsman" (or words to that effect) who would possibly write his plays for television if he were alive now, which seems to me from all points of view utter nonsense, it is very well done I think.'), Alec Guinness ('I feel terribly guilty about Julius Caesar….I would like you to know that I think it is an admirable edition of the play. Dr. Guthrie's notes & comments are alive and stimulating and I would have thought just the thing to fire young students' imaginations. I think it would be difficult for a school boy to read this edition and announce that Shakespeare is a bore'), Sybil Thorndike ('The introduction of Tyrone Guthrie seems to me to point the way for every student - a way which is Theatre way. To attempt to study the plays of Shakespeare away from their true habitation surely is to fail to understand their real significance'), W. Somerset Maugham (referring to his short stories Louise and The Luncheon; light tape stain just affecting the signature), Max Beerbohm (briefly declining to figure in an anthology) and Tyrone Guthrie. MCQUEEN STEVE: (1930-1980) American Actor. D.S., Steve McQueen, four pages, 4to, Beverly Hills, California, 2nd January 1962. The partially printed document is a standard American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) exclusive agency contract issued between the William Morris Agency and McQueen for a period of two years in which McQueen agrees to pay the agency 10% of his earnings. Boldly signed by McQueen in blue ink at the conclusion and countersigned by a representative of the William Morris Agency. The first and final pages are matted in cream either side of a photograph of McQueen in a scene from The Thomas Crown Affair and framed and glazed in a plain black wooden frame to an overall size of 28.5 x 15.5. Together with individual signed cards by actors James Garner and James Coburn matted alongside each other in brown beneath a photograph of the two men alongside Steve McQueen in a scene from The Great Escape, framed and glazed in a silver coloured frame to an overall size of 14 x 17. Also including a D.S. by actor Charles Bronson, being a signed cheque, Los Angeles, California, 1st April 1978. The partially printed cheque is drawn on the Bank of America and made payable to International Services Agency for the sum of $1425. Bronson's signature is unaffected by any bank cancellations. Matted in pale mottled white beneath a photograph of the actor in a scene from The Great Escape and framed and glazed in a silver coloured frame to an overall size of 14 x 17. The signatures of Coburn, Garner and Bronson are a little faded, although perfectly legible. Generally about VG, 3 £600 - 900

CONNERY SEAN: (1930- ) Scottish Actor, famous for his portrayal of James Bond. Academy Award winner. D.S., Sean Connery, being a signed cheque, Beverly Hills, California, 22nd November 1978. The partially printed cheque, completed in a different hand, is drawn on the City National Bank and made payable to Armstrong, Hendler & Barnet for the sum of $958.36. Signed by Connery in brown ink. Two file holes to the upper edge, one just affecting three letters of Connery's printed name, the signature unaffected by any bank cancellations. DIETRICH MARLENE: (1901-1992) German-born American Actress & Singer. A.L.S., Marlene, one page, 4to, n.p. (Paris), 17th December 1990, to Sweethearts (Mrs. G. Lovelle and her husband). Dietrich writes, in full, 'I think of you too often for my own good!!! Happy New year for you. I would like to sing!! All love, Marlene'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Dietrich and signed by her with her initials ('M. D.') to the return address on the verso. Together with a signed Christmas greetings card by Dietrich, the slim 8vo folding card featuring a colour design to the cover of Christmas decorations including a bell and baubles. Signed in blue ink to the inside beneath a printed greeting, 'To both of you with much love, Marlene' and additionally annotated in her hand to the front cover, 'Only English card I could get here'.
