BERKELEY LENNOX: (1903-1989) English Composer. Small group of three A.Ls.S., Lennox Berkeley, six pages (total), 8vo and small 4to, Worcester and London, December 1980 - October 1981, each to [Alan] Poulton. Berkeley writes an interesting series of letters relating to his compositions, in part, 'I feel sure that I would benefit greatly from a survey of my work to date…I would like one of the possible contributors to be Peter Dickinson who has written the new article on me in the new Grove.' (25th December 1980), 'Aubade for Organ. This is the first of three pieces, Op 72 number 1. The other movements being Aria, and the last, Toccata. "There was neither grass nor corn" would, as you suppose, have been written in 1949. I can't remember in what order any compositions written after Op 96 would be, but I'll be having a meeting with my publishers (Messrs. Chester) to go into this.' (24th September 1981), 'I know this sounds nonsensical, but I was dissatisfied with my first Violin & Piano Sonata and withdrew it. I then wrote another one - it was a considerable improvement, so I decided to make it my Opus 1 forgetting that it was called No.2 when published. I regard it as my first published work, so I think its best just to call it Op 1.' (15th October 1981). VG, 3 £100 - 120

ALWYN WILLIAM: (1905-1985) English Composer of over seventy film scores and other works. Small series of three A.Ls.S., William Alwyn, four pages (total), 8vo and 4to, Halesworth, Suffolk, May 1980 - November 1984, each to Alan Poulton. In his first letter Alwyn refers to an article on Alan Bush and continues 'Naturally I am delighted and touched by your knowledge and appreciation of my music - particularly by your enthusiasm for "Lyra Angelica". "Beauty" still is to me the major reason for all artistic creation but the word seems anathema to most modern art….Indeed one of my major published poems is a study in aesthetics entitled "Daphne, or the Pursuit of Beauty". Because of this profound personal belief my music was almost completely neglected and I spent many years "in the wilderness". Now, thanks to the issue of the records of my symphonies and other major works during the past 10 years this has all changed and my reputation has become truly international', further welcoming the possibility of an authorative biography and list of works, 'preferably not exclusively on my film music, but preserving the correct balance between my serious music and to me, far less important, film music. It is now 20 years since I composed a film score, and I have no desire to stress my work in this field, important though it was.' (25th May 1980), in the other letters briefly referring to his current commission and returning some corrected proofs. Together with three A.Ls.S. by Alwyn's second wife, Doreen Mary Carwithen (1922-2003) British Composer of classical and film music, four pages, 8vo, Halesworth, Suffolk, October - November 1985, each to [Alan] Poulton, in the first referring to her recently deceased husband, 'He was a great man and will be sadly missed, but his music, poetry and paintings will be a perpetual memorial to him' (1st October 1985) and in the others referring to photographs and providing two addresses. VG to EX, 6 £100 - 120

Cooke writes to his correspondent about his compositions, in part, 'I have not kept records of first performances or first broadcasts, though in some cases, particularly more recent works, I can remember them' (7th February 1986), in one letter providing details of various works including Soldier from the Wars Returning, The Song of Soldiers, O What is that sound that so thrills the ear?, Reconciliation, Jacobean Suite etc., and in other letters thanking his correspondent for various detailed lists of compositions which he has brought up to date and added various corrections and additions to, congratulating him on 'a big achievement!' and looking forward to the publication of the work. Small group of four A.Ls.S., John Addison and three with his first name only, six pages (total), 8vo and 4to, Old Bennington, Vermont, August 1992 - June 1994, each to Alan [Poulton]. Addison writes to his correspondent in connection with a study of 50 Modern British Composers for which he agrees to supply some information, sending lists of scores (no longer present) for theatre, television and films etc., and stating, in part, 'Emerson Edition Ltd have just published a piece they commissioned from me: Five Dialogues for Flute and Clarinet. Also in the works from them….is my Harlequin for soprano saxophone and piano. This was a commission from a soprano sax specialist musician in Vermont originally under the title Rondo Giocoso, Harlequin and Columbine.' (17th January 1994), 'I have recently donated most of my film scores to Brigham Young University's archives and have sent them all relevant files….Regarding the television shows you mention: 1) My score for Firefighter was thrown out by the network, much to the fury of the producer, Greg Simms, who was thrilled with the score. 2) Amazing Stories was a series of short….TV shows produced by Stephen (sic) Spielberg. Many of the top L.A. composers wrote scores for minute fees only because of Spielberg's name. I did two of them….' (23rd June 1994). Some slight, minor creasing and a feint paperclip rust stain to the head of one letter, not affecting the text or signature, about VG, 4 £100 - 120

GIPPS RUTH: (1921-1999) British Composer. Series of five T.Ls.S., mostly Ruth Gipps, eight pages (total), 4to, Uckfield, East Sussex, May 1989 - June 1995, each to Alan Poulton. Gipps writes an interesting series of letters concerning her compositions, making observations on some discrepancies with Poulton's lists of her works, in part, 'although a number of my things have been properly published I have gathered them all back, having experienced being pulped, having sets of parts lost just before a concert, having an American publisher who kept moving so that I couldn't contact him, etc. I have now got back all my own Copyrights. I think "Pub. So-and-so, Copyright returned to composer" covers every case except "The Cat", of which I always held the Copyright myself.' (14th March 1990), 'I don't see how anybody can list my music properly until I'm dead, and then I shan't be here to type the list. Firstly there is a list of my commissioned BBC incidental music. I regard it as being so totally unimportant that I have never given it opus numbers, and I have no idea where the scores are. It has just transpired that the BBC Library has a catalogue….Upon asking what music of mine was in the catalogue, the answer was "just one item - Phosphorus". I let out a muted yell of disbelief (that having been my very first commission, a sort of apprentice job). They had no note of my broadcast symphonies or concertos, and the librarian told Eila Bannister when she investigated that she had never heard of me…..' (15th July 1991) and further providing details of compositions including Cool Running Water, Pan & Apollo, The Lady of the Lambs etc. Accompanied by several typed lists of other compositions. Small staple holes and minor rust stains to the upper left corners, not affecting the text or signatures, and some neat ink annotations in Poulton's hand. Generally VG, 5 £80 - 100
Alan Poulton - Compiler and editor of A Dictionary-Catalogue of Modern British Composers.

I think it must have been decided to leave me out and then at the very last moment the editors discovered that one of my symphonies was to be played in a few weeks at the Festival Hall. No proofing was done and the computer gave me someone else's OBE! So please leave that out.'). Each of the letters are written to Alan Poulton. Most with small staple holes and slight rust stains to the upper left corners, not affecting the text or signatures, generally VG, 16 £100 - 150

KNIGHT LAURA: (1877-1970) English Impressionist Artist. Illustrated A.L.S., Laura, one page, 4to, St. Johns Wood, London, 5th March 1966, to 'My dear Stanley'. Knight announces 'After re-reading your beautiful letter....this huge piece of paper gives me fits' and continues 'I have to scribble an image (not a portrait) but an inadequate expression of my delight. Words fail me - to do justice to your own is impossible. I have just spent several weeks trying to paint an impossible picture out of my head - about nothing. I live in the hope that it means something to someone else, but doubt it. Anyway it's good fun to try to do something you can't do....' Knight has illustrated her letter with an original pen and ink drawing of a ballerina in a full length pose, the image taking up around half the page. A couple of extremely light, minor stains, otherwise VG £100 - 120
