POLAR EXPLORATION: A good collection of six individual irregularly clipped pieces by various Polar Explorers comprising Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) Anglo-Irish Antarctic Explorer, Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) Norwegian Polar Explorer, the first person to reach both the South and North Poles, Thorvald Nilsen (1881-1940) Norwegian Naval Officer & Polar Explorer, second in command of Amundsen's South Pole Expedition 1910-13, Robert Peary (1856-1920) American Explorer, claimed to have led the first expedition to the North Pole, 1909, Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930) Norwegian Explorer, Nobel Peace Prize winner 1922, and Sven Hedin (1865-1952) Swedish Geographer & Explorer. The signatures of Peary and Hedin are in bold pencil and all six pieces are laid down to an oblong 4to sheet of black card with circular magazine images of four of the explorers attached. JUXON WILLIAM: (1582-1663) Archbishop of Canterbury 1660-63, previously Lord High Treasurer 1636-41. Juxon was present on the scaffold when King Charles I was executed and offered the King his last rites. Keppel announces 'I am sure you will help an old friend' and continues 'The noise next door is too awful, it begins at six, & I can't get a wink of sleep. Can you do anything to stop it, if they kept to the front of the house before breakfast, it would not wake me so early.' With blank integral leaf. Rodger of St. Andrews and bearing his blindstamp to the image. Signed ('Leopold') in fountain pen ink to a clear area at the base of the image. Annotated in ink to the lower photographer's mount 'taken Sept./76'. The Prince's signature is a little light in places. Autographs of the Prince are rare in any form following his untimely death at the age of 30 as a result of haemophilia. EISENHOWER DWIGHT D.: (1890-1969) American General of World War II, later American President 1953-61. T.L.S., Ike, one page, 4to, n.p. (Versailles), 26th February 1951, to Brigadier General Hay[e]s Kroner, on Eisenhower's personal printed stationery. Eisenhower states that Kroner's kind letter reached him on the day that he and his wife, Mamie, arrived in Versailles and continues 'It was indeed thoughtful of you to send me a copy of the SCROLL OF CHURCHILL'S SAYINGS', further remarking that 'It is a valued addition to my bedside reading.' Eisenhower also excuses his brief letter as he is getting settled 'both officially and at home' although looks forward to the possibility of meeting his correspondent again. A good letter for its reference to Eisenhower's Allied World War II colleague, British Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill. VG £200 - 300

T.L.S., Ike, one page, 4to, Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE, Paris), 18th June 1951, to Brigadier General Hayes Kroner, on Eisenhower's personal printed stationery. Eisenhower thanks Kroner for his note and the information about Villa Sarita, commenting 'I shall keep this information on file against the possibility that sometime one of us in this headquarters might have use for it. As of this moment, it is, of course, a little far away to be considered as a residence for anyone in SHAPE'. Accompanied by the original envelope annotated by Kroner. VG £150 - 200

French states that the sad news about his correspondent's brother reached him that evening and he continues 'I know well what awful distress you must be in and I long to be able to say anything that might bring you a grain of comfort…..I feel now however you will accept my most heartfelt sympathy in your great trouble. Let me say also that I mourn your dear brothers loss….His kindness….&….good nature endeared him to all of us, his comrades, who often depended so much upon his help. I know well what you suffer now and that you can listen to no consolation. But….believe me (as an oldish man who has had many trials in life) that time will ease the sharp strip of pain and bring you comfort.'
