An 8vo brown leather bound edition of The Surgeon's Vade Mecum - A Manual of Modern Surgery by Robert Druitt, Eleventh Edition published by Henry Renshaw and J & A Churchill, London, 1878, illustrated with 369 wood engravings, bearing a 12mo slip of paper inscribed in pencil by Nightingale, 'Miss Spencer, with Easter love, Florence Nightingale', and dated Easter 1882 in her hand, laid down to the marbled front free endpaper. With gilt stamped ownership label of Frances E. Spencer inlaid to pastedown (causing slight discoloration to Nightingale's piece, slightly affecting the text). | ANTHONY SUSAN B.: (1820-1906) American Civil Rights Leader, introduced women's suffrage in the United States. A.L.S., Susan B. Anthony, three pages, 8vo, Washington D.C., 11th January 1884, to a friend. Anthony sends news of the next convention and asks her correspondent for 'the contribution of a letter to be read in our meeting & published in our pamphlet report - a copy of which we shall lay upon the table of every member of Congress and we want to have therein as formidable an array of good names & strong appeals and arguments as possible - that we may thereby influence our law makers to act favourably upon our demand...' She continues to remark that she has written to Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell and adds 'I want a long list of the names of representative men & women enrolled with us this time, and I hope this may be the last time we shall be compelled to come begging at the feet of the peoples servants at Washington'. VG £100 - 150 Elizabeth Blackwell (1821-1910) American Doctor, the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States, as well as the first woman on the United Kingdom Medical Register. (July 1899), to Miss von Seydewitz. Anthony states that she will try and attend her correspondent's meeting of journalists at Lady Sutherlands and continues 'May I bring along with me Mrs. Harper - the writer of My Life and Work? She is a real journalist having edited a daily political paper for four years. She read a paper at the meeting of the Council over which Lady Sutherland presided, and I noticed that she took the greatest interest in it.' | [CARTER HOWARD]: (1874-1939) English Archaeologist, discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun (1922-23). GUSTAV VI ADOLF (1882-1973) King of Sweden 1950-73. An excellent A.L.S., Gustav Adolf, as Crown Prince, four pages, 8vo, Sofiero Castle, Helsingborg, Sweden, 13th July 1931, to Howard Carter, on the Prince's blind embossed monogrammed stationery. The Prince announces 'I hear through Dr. Lugar (?) that you have been kind enough to present a painting of your own to our little Egyptian collection in Stockholm.' and continues to add that he has not been in Stockholm to see it, but thanks Carter for his great kindness 'as I am the president of the small committee which is helping…..to create an Egypt Museum.' The Prince further states 'I know that Lugar was very lucky in Egypt and that he was able to acquire a good many valuable objects, some of which I have seen and some of which have not yet arrived. He tells me that several of the things from Sahhara (sic) are really good things.' Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by the Prince to Carter at Luxor. A rare draft A.L.S., Howard Carter, (a somewhat hurried example of his signature), one page, small 4to, n.p. (Luxor, Egypt), n.d. ('January', 6th January 1930), to Harold de Bildt in Cairo. Written in bold pencil on feint ruled notepaper, Carter replies to his correspondent's invitation to lecture in Stockholm and states that he will be happy to accept if it can be arranged between the 20th and 31st May 1931, continuing 'With regards to conditions, those mentioned in the second paragraph of your letter will be acceptable...' Together with Harold de Bildt's letter of reply, a T.L.S., Harold de Bildt, one page, 4to, Cairo, 23rd January 1930, to Howard Carter, on the printed stationery of the Legation Royale de Suede en Egypte, thanking him for his letter and confirming the dates, further adding 'The President of The Swedish-British Society of Stockholm, Admiral Henry Lindberg, an old friend of mine, has written to me asking me to convey to you the invitation of the Society to give a lecture also to them during your visit. The Society was founded in 1919, enjoys the patronage of TT.RR.HH. the Crown Prince and Princess...' and concluding 'I am not yet able to tell you under the auspices of what institution the original invitation issued by Dr. Otto Smith desires you to lecture, but will let you know as soon as I am informed.' | ENGLISH CIVIL WAR: Manuscript Document issued during the English Civil War, being a D.S. by Thomas Lawton and Robert Nairne, one page, oblong folio, 1st January 1647/8, the indenture being a lease for one year by Colonel John More, Governor of the County of Louth and Garrison of Dundalk, to Thomas Lawton, Commissary of Victuals for the said Garrison, of the watermill near the Moyle Castle in County Louth which belongs to the Dundalk Garrison with all buildings and watercourses, dams etc., for an annual rent of £13.6.8, to be paid in four quarterly payments. More also covenants to grant a warrant, on reasonable request by Lawton, to the inhabitants in and near Knock bridge 'for the bringing home a millstone from thence to the forsayd water mill' and Lawton covenants when this has been done he will at his charges 'lay the same, and at the end of the sayd terme soe leave yt: & the mill & Howse in tenantable repayre.' The manuscript document is addressed to Sir Stephen Fox, Paymaster General of the Land Forces and Garrisons, and is a warrant for a payment of £1625.17.04 to be made to James, Duke of Monmouth, 'The same being due to Our owne Troope of Guards Commanded by the said Duke of Monmouth upon the muster of the 20th of November 1669 Inclusive, to the 15th of January following Exclusive being Fifty six dayes according to Our Establishment and the muster Roll.' Signed to the verso by the Duke of Monmouth (his signature a little light in places, although perfectly legible). With blank integral leaf. Three very minor, light stains to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise about EX £800 - 1200 Sir Stephen Fox (1627-1716) English Politician, Paymaster of the Forces 1661-76, 1679-80. James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth (1649-1685) English Nobleman, the eldest illegitimate son of King Charles II and his mistress Lucy Walter. Captain and Colonel of His Majesty's Own Troop of Horse Guards 1668-79 and Commander-in-Chief of the Forces 1674-85. Monmouth was executed by beheading in 1685 after making an unsuccessful attempt to depose his uncle, King James II, in the Monmouth Rebellion. A rare combination of signatures - only one other document signed by both King Charles II and the Duke of Monmouth is recorded by American Book Prices Current as having been sold at auction (Sotheby's, 13th March 1979). |

D.S., Catherina R, (a particularly fine, bold example), as Queen Consort, at the head, one page, folio, Whitehall, 14th October 1679. The manuscript document is addressed to Sir James Butler, Attorney General, and is a warrant requiring him to draw up Letters Patent ('fitt for Our Signature') appointing Robert Jackson 'to be Our Particular Receivr. of Our Rents & Revenues in the County of Yorke & Lenox Lands' with the usual fee of 2% for portage. Countersigned at the foot by Henry Hyde, 2nd Earl Clarendon (1638-1709) English Aristocrat & Politician, Private Secretary to Catherine of Braganza from 1662 and, from 1665, her Lord Chamberlain. Later appointed Lord Privy Seal (1685-87) by his brother-in-law, King James II. With integral leaf. The upper half of the document is mounted to card. Some light age wear, G £400 - 600 Catherine of Braganza is credited for introducing the custom of drinking tea in Great Britain. |

| DE KEROUAILLE LOUISE: (1649-1734) Duchess of Portsmouth, Mistress of King Charles II. A.L.S., L Duchesse de Portsmouth, three pages, 8vo, Daubigny, 19th March 1725, to a Lord, in French. The Duchess states that it is a long time since she has received news of her correspondent and continues 'I am reduced to the worst of unhappiness, since, my dear my Lord, I am a hundred times more aware of it, For the misfortune to which I am reduced, and which I try to accept with the resignation that I owe to the Lord, would destroy my reason, if I were not really and truly loved by my dear Lord.' The Duchess adds 'Mr. de Gauville, who is here, asks me to convey to you a hundred thousand compliments, and to ask if you still have the intention of giving me the joy and satisfaction of seeing you by coming here in the sring. If so, if he could he know approximately when, he would try to arrange his affairs and his commitments, in order to come and keep you company during your stay.' and further reports 'I have just been sent a piece of news from Paris that would make Fme really sad, if proved to be true. It is the disgrace of the Count of Cadogan, and you can be in no doubt that I take a most sincere interest in everything that regards him. I do not have all the detail, except that he had been stripped of all his posts. Please assure the Duchess of Richmond of my perfect affection, and say that I share her sorrow, and your own, if this news is true. My dear Lord, tell me what you know of it, and what he stands accused of, for there to have been such severity meted out to a man of his standing. Please embrace Lady Caroline for me. I have also been informed of the marriage of Duroy with Princess Amelie, second daughter of the Prince of Wales. I very much hope that is true. I am no longer able to attend court, on account of my health, my age, and the cruel effects of my affairs.' In concluding the Duchess remarks 'As for me, my dear Lord, I no longer dare to hope for any pleasure or happiness, since great misfortune has been my lot in so many ways. However, if my Lord still loves me, my heart, still tenderly devoted to him, would know some appeasement through the sincerity of a perfect affection for my dear Lord.' The manuscript document is a record of the proceedings of a Court Martial held at Cokelburgh on 2nd July 1697, presided over by Thomas Fairfax, listing the various military personnel present, and relating, firstly, to the soldier John Whitebread, accused of robbing Collingwood of a trunk of linen fourteen days earlier and the crime being fully proven, 'The Court Martiall are unanimously of Opinion That the prisonr: is Guilty of Breach of the 20th article of Warr and doe sentence him to be putt to Death accordingly' as well as the soldiers John Justice and William Clarke, both accused of desertion, 'and they bring in different storys giveing no satisfactory account of themselves to the Court. The Court Martiall are of Opinion That they are both Guilty of Breach of the 23rd Article of Warr, and sentence them to be putt to Death accordingly' and finally the soldiers John Waye and Thomas Coldman, both acquitted of desertion as the proof against them was insufficient. Signed at the foot by Thomas Fairfax. At the conclusion of the document King William III has signed a statement approving of the proceedings of the Court Martial 'and to order Execution accordingly'. The Queen states 'I have just received word from England, which I am sending you, not daring to send it directly to the King, because he distrusts all news, and doubts even those I have myself received from Ireland. However I would like to think that some part of this may be true, and await confirmation of it at any moment.' and continues 'In the name of God, may the help that we have resolved to send to Ireland arrive, for if we do not follow up the good run of small successes we have had, it will be of no advantage to us at all. There have been so many bad results, that we are having trouble believing the good. However, God will help us, and as long as the King of France comes to our aid, we can return to England without a miracle. It is high time to realise that if we lose it, we shall also be lost with it, but I am wasting my time telling you all this, since you understand it better than I do, and, after myself, I believe you hold this closer to your heart than anyone else on earth.' A fine L.S., Your Good Cousin, Anne R, as Queen, two pages, small folio, Palace at St. James, 10th March 1702, to Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine, in Italian. The Queen states 'It is with considerable pain that we share with you news of the death of our illustrious brother, our dearest, most serene and powerful lord William III, by the grace of God, of glorious memory, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, our truly human lord, who was consumed by fever and within a very few days, on the Eighth of this month, was removed from this life.' and continues 'We feel deeply how serious this loss will be, not only for Britain but for most of Europe, desirous of a figurehead and protector, and who by this excellent king's death are doubly robbed. However, we are confident with new hope at the dawn of our reign upon the British throne. As our predecessor, we shall make every effort to cultivate, establish and retain friendships among princes, which all sides will agree not to allow to be extinguished by changing allegiances…..Certainly, for our part, we shall never cease to strive to maintain the warmth of affection of such relationships, and renew our efforts every day to strengthen them.' With integral address leaf bearing a blind embossed paper seal (small area of paper loss at the base of the page, evidently caused when the letter was originally opened). Two small, dark stains to the upper and lower right corners of the first page, also evident on the second page, only very slightly affecting one word of text and not the signature. Otherwise VG £600 - 900 Johann Wilhelm II, Elector Palatine (1658-1716) Ruler of the Electoral Palatinate of the Rhine in the Kingdom of Germany and the Holy Roman Empire 1690-1716. On 8th March 1702 King William III died of pneumonia, caused by a complication from a broken collarbone following a fall from his horse, Sorrel. Anne became Queen upon the death of William III, just two days before signing the present letter. She was immediately popular, distancing herself from her late Dutch brother-in-law, and in her first speech to the English Parliament, on 11th March, declaring 'As I know my heart to be entirely English, I can very sincerely assure you there is not anything you can expect or desire from me which I shall not be ready to do for the happiness and prosperity of England.' |

The manuscript document, in English, is headed Instructions for Mr. Le Comte de Serrant and states, in part, 'You will first of all address yourself to Mr. de Roda to whom you will deliver the letter you are charged with….and to desire he will instruct you as to the allures of the Court and of the means you are to use for the delivery of the other letters to the King and Queen and to the Ministers. So soon as you have had a full conference with Mr. de Roda you will give us an account of it by a letter to be addressed to Mr. John Douglas at Rome under cover to Mr. Belloni and you will be punctual in informing us by every post of every circumstance that may happen in the course of your negociation…..If there shall be question of our friends you are to assure that we have a great number in England, Scotland and Ireland who are very zealous and ready to act whenever a proper occasion shall offer. Philip the 5th granted us a subsidy of 20,000 German florins p month for six months which was paid for three months only - you will act as your discretion shall direct you as to a demand of payment of the three months of this subsidy which are in arrear….' I would like to think you have not altogether forgotten your friends in Italy.' and continues 'Having spoken about myself, let me now thoroughly recommend to your attention Mr. Giacomo Trombara, architect, very skilled in his profession, and whom the Empress has summoned from Rome. I entrust him to your protection, and hope that you will not refuse him, and that he will show himself worthy of your goodness, and that of your respected sovereign, and will make the arts flourish in her realm. The arts will be reborn in your country, even as they perish in Italy. Not only her subjects will owe her recognition for this, but also all lovers and admirers of the great and the beautiful.' The manuscript document is a warrant appointing Styan Thirlby to be the King's Waiter in the Port of London following the death of Samuel Dawson. With three elaborately decorated engraved borders to three sides of the document, and with the Great Seal of King George II affixed at the base with the original red and white cords, the brown wax seal of six inch diameter and depicting the King crowned and enthroned in state to the recto and on horseback to the verso (contained in half of the original circular tin case).
