The young Prince writes, in full, 'Thank you for your letter. Here are some old pictures of me and Harry at our last school'. Accompanied by the two colour photographs that the Prince refers to, the first (2.5 x 3) being a school photograph showing the two young Princes standing and seated together wearing their Wetherby School uniforms, and the second (2 x 2) a more candid image of the young Prince Harry drinking from a glass and with the thumb of his left hand raised towards the camera. HENRY OF PRUSSIA: (1862-1929) German Grand Admiral, younger brother of Kaiser Wilhelm II, German Emperor. A good vintage signed sepia 5 x 8.5 cabinet photograph of the Prince standing in a formal three quarter length pose in naval uniform. Photograph by J. C. Schaarwachter of Berlin. Signed in fountain pen ink, as Prince of Prussia, to a light area at the head of the image and dated 25th July 1890 in his hand. The Prince has also added the name of the German Imperial Navy cruiser Irene in his hand to the image. I have a cousin named I believe Henry Gladstone but if this is the person he would do better to refer you to his Father who is a gentleman of high respectability residing near Liverpool.' A.L.S., W E Gladstone, three pages, 8vo, Walmer Castle, Deal, Kent, 15th August 1870, to an editor (name illegible). Gladstone announces 'On receiving from you the interesting review of my "Juventus Mundi" in the New York World, I sent an immediate expression of my thanks.' and continues 'I have now read the article and I much admire its ability. The writer is justified in his remarks on my defective attainments in philology, and indeed in most things applicable to the Homeric question but lying outside the text of Homer. But I do not think the writer is himself closely or accurately acquainted with that text, nor does he seem to have thought it necessary to give my book the benefit of a careful reading.' Watson, President of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons at Glasgow, on mourning stationery. Disraeli announces that there has been a terrible mistake concerning his correspondent's letters and continues 'I will not weary you with a long story. I believe you have heard, now, from Mr. Montagu Corry, but I cannot deny myself the pleasure of expressing to you, myself, how much I felt honoured by the invitation from the distinguished body over wh: you preside' He concludes by adding that the limited duration of his visit to Glasgow prevents him from accepting Watson's invitation. BALDWIN STANLEY: (1867-1947) British Prime Minister 1923-24, 1924-29 & 1935-37. A.L.S., Baldwin of Bewdley, two pages, 8vo, Eaton Square, London, 7th December 1932, to Mrs. Cadbury. Baldwin announces 'Another of your kind thoughts! and from one of my favourite haunts. Woodbury is one of the most beautiful hills I know and I have tramped it at all seasons of the year and in all weathers' and continues 'Thank you for what you say about the Broadcast. It is not an easy one to do. I shall be glad when it is safely over.' Together with an A.L.S. by Lucy Baldwin (1869-1945) Wife of Stanley Baldwin, one page, 8vo, 11 Downing Street, Whitehall, 14th May 1935, to Mrs. Cadbury, thanking her for a 'delicious little bowl of flowers' and continuing 'I loved too the tale of your young daughter and her impressions of the Jubilee, it really was a wonderous (sic) time for us all old & young.', also including two other A.Ls.S. to Cadbury, and a further series of A.Ls.S. and one T.L.S. by various scientists including Henry Maudsley, Clifford Allbutt, Charles E. Beevor, Samuel Wilks, Themistocles Zammit, William Bateson (2), William Roberts, William Sharpey, Archibald Geikie (3) etc. Many of the scientists' letters have interesting content, are accompanied by the original envelopes, and all are written to Charlton Bastian (1837-1915) English Physiologist & Neurologist. CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. Fountain pen ink signature ('Winston S. Churchill') at the head of an 8vo sheet of blind embossed stationery from the Secretary of State for War at the War Office, Whitehall. Accompanied by the original envelope addressed to an American collector and postmarked 12th September 1919. The final third of the notepaper is neatly cut away and with some overall discoloration, only lightly affecting the signature. G £200 - 300

CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. Collection of seven T.Ls.S., Winston S. Churchill, and one W S Churchill, each one page, 8vo and 4to (1), London & Westerham, Kent (one on the printed stationery of the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street), 25th January 1948 - 2nd December 1961, all to Miss. B. Lobban of the Duke Street Kennels in London. Churchill writes a series of letters concerning his dog, in part, 'I am so sorry that Rufus has developed this distressing complaint, and I hope you will let me know at the end of the three weeks whether or not he has recovered. After the sad loss of the first one, I feel that I would rather not have another dog just now. Please do not therefore look for another poodle for me….I am very grateful to you for the trouble you have taken in looking after Rufus during my absence abroad.' (25th January 1948), 'Thank you so much for your gift and for remembering my birthday. I was so glad to see Rufus back looking so well and happy' (13th December 1953), 'Rufus is delighted with his new blue collar and lead, and it suits him very well. It is kind of you to remember him again and to send him such a lovely present.' (4th December 1956), 'How very kind of you to think of Rufus again on my birthday, and to send him such an attractive and useful present.' (5th December 1957), 'It was indeed kind of you…to send Rufus a new collar and lead. It suits him very well, and he is most proud of it.' (2nd December 1958), 'How very kind of you….to send Rufus such a lovely coat. It will be most useful to him in the cold weather.' (2nd December 1960), 'How very kind of you….to send Rufus a smart new collar and lead, which he is wearing with pleasure.' (2nd December 1961). Each of the letters are accompanied by the original envelopes and are contained within a handsome blue quarter navy morocco and cloth slipcase with five raised bands and gilt stamped title to the spine. A touching series of letters, three of which have a single file hole in the upper left corner, not affecting the text or signatures. VG, 7 £4000 - 6000
Churchill writes concerning his French poodle, Rufus II, a successor to his previous dog who had been run over and killed in a motor accident while Churchill was attending the Conservative Party Conference. Churchill showed Rufus II a great deal of affection, treating him as part of the family, and would introduce him to friends and visitors, 'His name is Rufus II - but the II is silent'.

Churchill regrets that her correspondent's letter has been overlooked until now and continues 'In reference to the matter you write about - I am sorry that I cannot (?) your views as I have not the time to write on such an important subject at present.' ATTLEE CLEMENT: (1883-1967) British Prime Minister 1945-51. T.L.S., Attlee, one page, oblong 8vo, King's Bench Walk, Temple, n.d., to Mr. Ramesh. Attlee informs his correspondent that he shall be careful 'not to overdo it' and continues 'I am only doing 19 meetings - just two a night. I started last night and did not find it too much.' In concluding he further comments 'I have every hope of a great Labour victory but of course one cannot tell. It should be all right. Wilson is a first class leader.' In the first letter Thatcher thanks her correspondent for writing and making her views clear and continues to add that she wasn't able to be in the House of Commons when the Abortion (Amendment) Bill came up although confirming that it received a Second Reading and will now go to Committee Stage. In the second letter Thatcher thanks her correspondent for a copy of a letter from the Barnet Controller of Legal Services and adds that she herself has written to Barnet Council about a disturbance on Lincoln Road and will let her correspondent know when she has any further news. The partially printed document relates to the appointment of Robert Charles Clipperton as Consul of Her Britannic Majesty for the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan and declares Clipperton 'free to exercise and enjoy such functions, powers and privileges as are allowed to Consuls by the law of nations or by the laws of the United States and existing treaty stipulations between the Government of Great Britain and the United States.' Signed by Cleveland at the foot and countersigned by Thomas F. Bayard (1828-1898) American Lawyer and Politician, United States Secretary of State 1885-89 and Ambassador to the United Kingdom 1893-97. With blind embossed seal. ROOSEVELT FRANKLIN D.: (1882-1945) American President 1933-45. T.L.S, Franklin D Roosevelt, one page, 4to, Navy Department, Washington, 16th October 1917, to Lieutenant Aymar Johnson. Roosevelt states that he hopes his letter will reach Johnson before he leaves and that the matter of boat davits has been resolved, continuing 'The matter of reporting to the American Consul in foreign ports is being handled entirely by the C. Os., on the other side. If you get a chance, I suggest having a talk with the Consul wherever you land in case things are not running right and he can take the matter up with the Naval Attaché if he is the right sort of Consul.'
