  Iona. 1857 Cover to Mecklenburg via Belgium franked by 2d blue strip of four cancelled by two "IONA IONA" Scots Local cancels and "23" numerals of Aros, backstamped with a further strike of "IONA IONA" and at Aros, Oban and in Germany, light staining and a little creasing but a remarkable franking and destination from Iona. Also 1d red on piece with the "IONA IONA" Scots Local cancel, 1903-07 picture postcards with Iona c.d.s (8), unused cards (2), and a c.1860 print of Iona village. (13). £250-300

  Islay - Uniform 4d Post. 1839 (Dec 16) Entire letter from Bowmore to Inverary, faint Bowmore backstamp, over 1oz weight, posted unpaid so charged 2/8. During the Uniform 4d Post period letters up to 1oz weight were charged the same whether prepaid or unpaid, but letters over 1oz were charged with twice the rate if unpaid; this letter would therefore have only cost 1/4 if prepaid. Very scarce, very few such covers recorded from the 4d Post period. £120-150

  Lismore Lighthouse. 1843 (Apr 20) Entire letter written by James Black from Lismore Lighthouse to the Procurator Fiscal in Inverary, concerning items carried away from the lighthouse which the police have failed to return, a 1d red tied by Maltese Cross and Inverary backstamp; and an 1852 entire to Messrs D&T Stevenson in Edinburgh (the famous lighthouse engineers) with 1d red cancelled at Oban, a fine wax seal depicting a lighthouse and "LISMORE". North Uist - Maritime Mail. 1836 (July 1) Entire letter from North Uist to "The Right Honourable the Paymaster General of His Majestys Land Forces, London" with a Free datestamp applied in London, backstamped with the superb "UIST to DUNVEGAN" and an Edinburgh c.d.s. An early use of this Uist to Dunvegan handstamp, applied at Lockmaddy on letters carried by Post Office Packet, recorded 1836-42, exceptionally unusual on a free letter. Photo on Page 116. £400-500

Pladda Lighthouse. 1840 (July 18) Entire letter written by Andrew Adamson from Pladda Lighthouse, on "Northern Lights" notepaper, addressed to "Robert Stevenson Esq., Engineer for the Northern Light Houses, Edinburgh", bearing a 1d black, PB plate 2 (3 margins, torn into at top) tied by a red Maltese Cross, backstamped at Saltcoats and Edinburgh. Adamson answers a query on differing inks used by him and his assistant in June's monthly report. Also an 1834 letter written on board the "Regent" Tender at Tobermory (with Tobermory handstamp) concerning supplies for the boat at Pladda, and stating "you will receive Mr Stevensons order for the other things", and a print and postcard of Pladda Lighthouse. A rare 1d black letter from a lighthouse, to the famous lighthouse engineer Robert Stevenson. (2). Photo on Page 116. £400-500

  Raasay/Skye, etc. 1803-1910 Letters, cards, etc., including 1803 free letter from Nairn to Sconser, Isle of Skye, with interesting letter from M. Macalister about raising a Highland Regiment; 1834 letter from Edward Lees at G.P.O in Edinburgh posted to Francis Freeling, about increasing the sum paid in aid to the mail packet from the Isle of Skye to North & South Uist and Benbecula (faults); 1888 notice of non delivery of a telegram from Portree to a yacht at Tobermory which had sailed, with Portree c.d.s; 1911 Reginald Bray postcard to the Keeper of "Southrona Lighthouse, Shetland Isles" directed to "Try Raasay, Kyle" and signed by the Keeper of Raasay Lighthouse; and 1904-10 postcards (5) with cancels of Harris, etc. (9). £120-150

  Staffa / Dubh Artach Rocks Lighthouse. 1856 Letter from Portree on notepaper headed with an engraving of "Bending Pillars in Staffa" (not posted), and a postcard of Staffa; 1895 photos taken on a holiday to the Western Isles with views of Staffa (7), also other photos (8) including the Steamer "Columba", Mull, etc; and 1920 (Nov 21) handwritten Last Will and Testament of George Robertson, Assistant keeper at Dhuheartach Lighthouse on headed notepaper within a cover with printed address of the Northern Lighthouse Board of Edinburgh, presumably carried by official lighthouse supply vessel, the only recorded letter from this very remote lighthouse.
