  Lockheed G-AFGN - Switzerland / G.B. 1939 (Aug 10) Cover to Switzerland posted at the Bakewell Agricultural Show, KGVI ½d + 1d pair cancelled at Bakewell with a "MOBILE POST OFFICE / B" c.d.s below, singed at the right, bearing a bilingual French/German label explaining that it was damaged in the air crash at Luxeuil, the label with a Basel c.d.s (Aug 15). A very unusual Mobile Post Office cover. £100-120

  Lockheed G-AESY - Denmark / Sweden. 1939 (Aug 14) Covers from England to Denmark (4) or Sweden (3), all recovered from the August 15th Heston to Copenhagen British Airways flight which caught fire and made an emergency landing in the water at Vordingborg, the five passengers all drowning, the plane being raised the following day. One cover with a 2½d meter, the others all with the stamps washed off, three forwarded or returned within transparent ambulance envelopes, the three covers to Sweden all with Malmo Post Office explanatory slips (Nierinck type bb or similar to type b), one cover with boxed "Indgaaet med / Mangel / af Frimaerker".   S.S "St Paul". 1897 (June 9) Cover from San Francisco to Bowmore, Isle of Islay, the stamp washed off with a red London Paid c.d.s (June 24) applied, violet boxed "DAMAGED BY IMMERSION / IN SEA WATER", reverse with an Officially Sealed label and backstamps of Greenock and Bowmore. £100-120

R.M.S "Labrador". 1899 Cover from Victoria, British Columbia, to London, the stamp washed off, handstamped violet boxed "DAMAGED BY IMMERSION / IN SEA WATER" and endorsed "Recovered from wreck "Labrador"", boxed "FOUND AT GLASGOW / WITHOUT CONTENTS" and a Glasgow c.d.s (Mar 13) alongside, flap missing. From the "Labrador" which was wrecked on the Mackenzie rocks in the Hebrides on March 1st. Seven mailbags were washed ashore on the islands of Mull, Coll and Tiree, and were taken to Glasgow; one other mailbag was dealt with at Liverpool (see next lot). A fine cover, the "without contents" cachet unusual. Photo on Page 24. £180-220

R.M.S "Labrador". 1899 (Feb 16) Cover from St. Johns, Newfoundland, the stamp washed off with a Newfoundland 2c stamp from another cover reapplied by the Post Office, handstamped violet "RECOVERED FROM WRECK / OF S.S "LABRADOR"" with a Liverpool c.d.s (Mar 15) below. The lower edge repaired with stamp edging, reverse with an Officially Sealed label (March 16 Birmingham c.d.s) and endorsed "Received open at P.O B'Ham 16.3.93", flap missing.   S.S "Mexican". 1900 (Mar 23) Cover franked Cape 1d, from Tylden to England, handstamped red "RECOVERED FROM / WRECK OF MEXICAN", backstamped at Dover Station Office (Apr 25). The "Mexican" sank on April 5th eight miles from Cape Town after colliding with S.S "Winkfield" in fog. An unusually fine example of this wreck cachet. £100-120

Click to view full image... S.S "City of Rio de Janeiro". 1901 Cover from Japan to London, the stamps washed off, backstamped violet "Damaged In Wreck / Of S.S. Rio De Janeiro / Feb 22 1901" and repaired with a paper seal prestamped with a similarly worded cachet (but in capitals) in violet, tied by a San Francisco c.d.s (Feb 23), London arrival c.d.s. The "City of Rio de Janeiro", sailing from Yokohama to San Francisco, stuck a ledge and sank entering San Francisco Bay with the loss of over 100 lives. A fine cover, scarce with both cachets. Kennedy". 1904 (Dec 13) Picture postcard from Ireland to an employee of the Commercial Pacific Cable Co. on Midway Island, a KEVII 1d cancelled at Ballycastle, minor staining, handstamped large violet "Returned from / Wreck of Ken'dy", datestamps of Honolulu (Mar 26) and Midway Island (May 12). The Schooner "C. Kennedy" sailed from Honolulu to Midway Island with stores and a small mail for the few Marines and Cable Co. employees on the island, but was wrecked on March 2nd shortly after leaving Laysan; the mail was salvaged and returned to Honolulu on March 26th, finally arriving at Midway on May 12th after almost five months. An exceptional card, only one other cover recorded from this wreck. Photo on Page 24. £1,000-1,200

S.S "Cairo". 1905 (Feb 27) Picture postcard from London to Alexandria franked 1d, handstamped violet "SAUVE DU NAUFRAGE DU "CAIRO" / SAVED FROM THE WRECK OF S.S "CAIRO"", with an Alexandria c.d.s (Mar 6). The "Cairo" ran ashore at the entrance to the port of Alexandria on March 6th, cargo and mails being swept into the sea. An unusually fine card dealt with at Alexandria on the day of the wreck, illustrated by Hoggarth & Gwynn. Photo on Page 24. £120-140

S.S "Jebba". 1907 (Feb 27) Sierra Leone ½d newspaper wrapper from Freetown to London with violet "SALVED FROM / S.S JEBBA" (Hoggarth/Gwynn type 1a), also a fine real photo postcard of the wrecked ship.   S.S "Norwegian" / S.S "Scythia". 1917 (Jan 30) Picture postcard from Babakoji, Japan, to Sweden, the stamp washed off, handstamped "DAMAGED BY SEA WATER", from the S.S "Norwegian" which beached off the Irish coast after hitting a mine on 27th February. Also a 1945 (Apr 26) cover from Upper Sumas, British Columbia, to England, the stamps washed off, handstamped violet "DAMAGED BY FIRE & WATER", from the S.S "Scythia" which caught fire in the River Mersey on May 25th. Two good covers, both cachets applied at Liverpool. (2). £120-140

S.S "Leinster" - H&K Packet / Ireland. 1918 Water damaged cover form Ireland to Lancashire, the stamp washed off, handstamped violet boxed "SALVED FROM / S.S "LEINSTER"", with Ashton-Under-Lyne arrival datestamp (Oct 27). The H&K Packet Steamer "Leinster" was torpedoed en route from Kingstown to Holyhead on October 10th and sank with the loss of 480 lives; at least one bag of mail was washed ashore on the Isle of Man. Very few covers are recorded from this wreck (some of which do not bear this rare named cachet). Photo on Page 30. £600-800

  S.S "Groningen IV". 1944 Cover with enclosed letter posted at Siddeburen (Dec 16), and a picture postcard to Overveen with 1947 (Jan 13) arrival c.d.s, both extensively waterstained, bearing the explanatory label "STAATSBEDRIJF DER PTT / Stuk, afkomstig uit het S.S "Groningen IV", / dat einde 1944 op het Ijsselmeer is gezonken / en thans is gelicht". The "Groningen IV" was sailing on the Ijsselmeer, from Lemmer to Amsterdam, when she collided with the "Jan Nieveen" late on 8th January 1945. The "Groningen IV" sank with the loss of 14 lives, the vessel finally being raised 20 months later, in September 1946. (2). £100-120

  Japan - Kawasaki. 1942-44 Covers (with enclosed letters) from G.B to Aircraft Fitter D.J Sutch, captured when H.M.S "Hermes" was sunk off the coast of Ceylon in April 1942, comprising covers to "H.M.S Hermes, c/o G.P.O" (2, March/April 1942, one "Return To Sender"), and stampless covers (5) and 3d P.O.W postcards (2) to Kawasaki No. 1 Camp. Also 1943 typed copy of a message broadcast received from Sutch with a covering letter from the Naval Barracks at Lee-on-Sea, and 1945 telegrams sent to Sutch in Canada whilst en route to the U.K, or upon his arrival back in London. An interesting correspondence, the items to Kawasaki Camp all with Japanese censors. (12). £250-300

An interesting correspondence to a civilian, treated as a military P.O.W by the Japanese. (6). £240-280

Clark, addressed to an Officer in India, twice redirected within India, and again with a label to England, Japanese and Indian censors and "Service Des / Prisonniers De Guerre" cachet, Indian and London datestamps, vertical fold but unusual. Also 1942 stampless covers from G.B to P.O.Ws in Malaya with Japanese censors, one redirected to Korea, the other two to Taiwan, one of these to the stamp dealer (and noted Liberia specialist) Philip Cockrill.   Hong Kong / Japan. 1943 Stampless cover from Gloucester to "Gnr L.F Lees, British P.O.W, Camp 8, Hong Kong" with black seal of Takamaru applied in Tokyo, returned with violet boxed "IT IS REGRETTED THAT / THIS ITEM COULD NOT BE / DELIVERED BECAUSE THE / ADDRESSEE IS REPORTED / PRESUMED DECEASED"; and 1945 stampless cover from Brighton to "CSM E. Soden, 1st Middlesex Regt, Osaka P.O.W Camp, Kobe Sub Camp, Japan" with violet "RETURNED FROM ABROAD / SERVICE SUSPENDED". Both addressees were on the "Lisbon Maru" when it was sunk by the U.S.S "Grouper" on 1st October 1942; Rees died in the sinking whilst Soden was rescued by Chinese fishermen and subsequently recaptured by the Japanese.   Changi P.O.W Camp. 1943-44 Programmes for plays performed in the camp theatre (7), five of these special souvenir programmes with handpainted covers, including "Hay Fever" with signatures of 18 prisoners who acted in or helped produce the play, all apparently kept by Pte S. Jacobs. Also other ephemera including leaflets in British and Japanese dropped over Changi at the end of the war, unused P.O.W card, 1945 telegram sent by Jacobs from Colombo, 1943 official letter to his wife informing her he was a P.O.W with a separate slip showing how to address mail, photo of Jacobs, 1941 pre-war Christmas menu from Ipoh, etc. A scarce and interesting group. Nepal. 1943 (June 27) P.O.W card, the front identical to the type 1 cards, the reverse with preprinted messages including "I am quite well under kind treatment of Nippon authority", etc, sent by L/Naik Hari Lal Thapa of 2/2 Gurkha Rifles to Chhola village in Nepal, with Japanese and Indian censors and datestamps of Kathmandu Exchange P.O and Nuwakot West No. 4 (21 Nov. 1943), a few pinholes, otherwise fine. Tett only records one other example of this Singapore P.O.W card with preprinted messages, sent by an Indian P.O.W (the cards presumably only issued to Indian & Nepalese P.O.Ws), and this is the only recorded item from a Nepalese Gurkha P.O.W in a Japanese camp. Gobalswamy in Kuala Lumpur (flap missing); cover from Dinigut to Eden Peters, Homeo Medical Hall in Kuala Lumpur with violet "c/o PRISONER OF WAR / INFORMATION BUREAU / TOKYO"; and a postcard from Tanjore to J.S Annapillay, clerk at the Post Office at Kulim in Kedah, with Japanese censor cachet. Also India G.P.O leaflet with separate amendment page on communicating with P.O.Ws and civilians in Japanese territory, with a covering letter to S.R Chettiar. R.P de Grey in Singapore, or to the Dutch Sgt. B.C Vanes at Camp D in Java, the first Waller cover directed to the Medical Area in Changi, the others all forwarded to Thailand. The Vanes cover with two differing "Transferred to Thailand" cachets and endorsed "Head Quarters Group (Non Pladuk)"; the others endorsed "OVL L 6/11/42", "OVL / F 18/4/43" or simply "F". Brigade, A.I.F (2), and Australian Red Cross envelope and front printed in red, the envelope to M.A Justins, 19th Battery, 2/10th Field Regt. directed to Kaorin and Chungkai, the front to Pte B.E Russell, 27th Brigade endorsed as received at Nakom Pathon.
