Bouwknegt in No. 1 P.O.W Camp to his wife in Malang, Java, strangely with boxed "Malay Police" cachet and a British censor cachet, presumably missent to the U.K by the Japanese and subsequently returned, readdressed to Perlindoegan Solo, his wife apparently interned with manuscript "C.P 2769 / 3" (altered to "6"). Also a 1943 3½c Netherlands Indies postcard from Mrs Bouwknegt in Malang to her husband in a P.O.W Camp in Java D, violet "Transferred to Thailand" cachet, endorsed "Head Quarter Group Thai No 11390" and "Hut 6", both with Japanese censors. Also the Australian Red Cross Society delivery envelope posted at Melbourne (Aug 6) franked 2½d, and enclosed slip "You may not use this form for a reply to this message". Also Form B33 explaining how to address messages to prisoners in Japanese hands and typed slip "You may not use this form for a reply to this message". A fine and rare message form. £400-500

  1944 (Aug 14) Thai Red Cross message form from George Powell in Civilian Internment Camp, Bangkok, to his mother in Australia, handstamped circular "INTERNMENT CAMP / CENSORED / Bangkok, Thailand", red cachets of "THE THAI RED CROSS" and the Red Cross at Ankara (Dec 18) and Geneva (Jan 8), received 1st March 1945. Reverse with Victoria District Censor cachet explaining how to reply. Also Australian Red Cross letters (8) to Mrs Powell informing her that George Powell is an internee in Bangkok or forwarding cable messages from Powell received by the Red Cross in Geneva (3), another letter forwarding an interesting description of the internment camp sent to the Red Cross by a released internee (with Form B33 on communicating with prisoners), and letters on sending mail or parcels or acknowledging donations (with two covers); a 1940 letter and cover from Powell in Batavia, and two covers posted after liberation. These comprise a stampless cover marked "Prisoner of War Post" posted at Perth (Oct 17) with a letter from Powell at "P.O. Box 167, Bangkok, 2nd October", carried to Australia by a friend (Mr Sewell), in which Powell gives details on mails sent and received during his internment (13 Red Cross messages and six letters or cards sent, six letters received); the second written on December 24th, with cover marked "Ex POW Mail", posted in Australia (Jan 7) franked 5½d. An interesting group, the Red Cross message form fine and rare. (12+). £650-750

  1944 Thailand fourth type P.O.W card from Pte W. Ingham to his wife in London, the return address shown as Thailand Camp No. 3, Japanese and British censors; and 3d P.O.W card from Watford to "CSM E. Burgoyne, Thai Camp". Despite the use of the Thailand address Ingham and Burgoyne are both known to have been in Saigon, where this second card was received by Burgoyne (see Tett volume 3, p.162/6). (2). £140-160

Thailand P.O.W cards comprising type 3 card (10 July 1943), type 4/5 cards (31 Jan & 15 May 1944) all with the return address shown as No. 1 P.O.W Camp Thailand, and scarce type 6 card from Saigon (21 Aug 1945), all with Japanese censors, the final card written six days after the Japanese surrenderer unusually still censored by the Japanese but also with "UNIT CENSOR / AA317". Also 1945 (Sep 8) stampless air letter with "RAFPOST 6" c.d.s of Rangoon, written from Saigon, content includes "In April 1942 we left Singapore and came to Saigon where I was one of the favoured 450 who stayed here until now. We had a hard time but not nearly so bad as those in Burma and Thailand as we were in a civilised country .... we did not get any letters for two years but now I have over a hundred, the last Air Mail card was in June 1944"; and a stampless Australian Red Cross lettercard from H.M.T "Ormonde" at Port Suez (Oct 13) which includes "I was fortunate not to be on the railway in Thailand but stayed in Indo-China, the address of the camps was the same. The letters which I received yesterday were the first since May 1945 which were all pre-March 1944...... Because of the envelope don't think I am in hospital. It is the only one I have". A rare and interesting correspondence from Saigon (see Tett vol.3, p.168-174). (6). Photo on Page 34. £600-700

  Rangoon Jail. 1944 3d P.O.W cards to "Lt, R.C Fullarton, P.O.W Rangoon Jail, Burma", one without a Japanese censor probably delivered after the war, the other censored by the Japanese but readdressed to "Ship unknown, c/o P.O Box 164, London E.C", probably found in Rangoon after Fullarton's departure, with red F.P.O 305 c.d.s of Rangoon (Nov 10), boxed "Return To Sender" and "RECEIVED IN UNDELIVERED MAILS / FROM TERRITORY FORMERLY OCCUPIED / BY JAPANESE FORCES", the reverse handstamped "Head Clerk / Recovered P.O.W Mail Centre". Also a 1942 (May 28) airgraph to Fullarton at "Frontier Force 4, Base Post Office, Rangoon", returned in an Indian Airgraph envelope marked "Prisoner of War" and handstamped "RETOUR / INCONNU".
