Joint British/U.S Sea Post Offices operated on British "White Star Line" and U.S "American Line" ships from May 1905 until the contract expired in August 1914. Both the British and U.S Post Offices supplied sorters for the ships, and each provided their own cancellers. British sorters (and cancellers) were supposed to be used on all eastbound sailings (whether a U.S or British ship) and U.S sorters (and cancellers) on all westbound sailings, though there is evidence from known covers showing datestamps were sometimes used in the opposite direction. British stamps were usually used on eastbound sailings with British sorters and datestamps, and U.S stamps on westbound sailings which had American sorters using U.S datestamps; occasionally U.S datestamps may be found on British stamps or vice versa, but these are very scarce. All "Missent" and Tax handstamps were supplied by the U.S Post Office
Until the summer of 1907 British "White Star" ships sailed from Liverpool, but U.S "American Line" ships sailed from and to Plymouth. These Plymouth datestamps were issued to British sorters for use on these four U.S "American Line" ships. All are very rare; numbers "1" and "2" were not recorded in use by Roger Hosking when he published his book "The Transatlantic Post Office" in 1979.

STA.)", etc. (33). £180-200
