IONIAN ISLANDS - CORFU 1551 - EARLY LETTER FROM A SHIP SENT TO THE COUNCIL OF TEN IN VENICE - Fine 3 June EL (fine seal-triangle on reverse) from Andrea Duodo ("Provveditore dell'Armata" - Commissioner of the Fleet) written "Di Galia a Corphu" (from the galley at Corfu) and clearly addressed to "Concilii Decem" (of Venice) with interesting contents advising that he will send galleys to Zante to fetch the 10,000 ducats that had been sent from Venice to buy wheat. RARE EARLY LADIES LETTER - 25 Oct. 1587 EL (complete seal-triangle; some stains - mainly internal) from "Venecia" written and signed by "Julia Vendra Min" (a family letter to her brother). A very early letter to be written by a woman and thought to be the only such letter recorded to Zante in the entire Venetian Period (1386-1797). Plus 6 Aug. 1808 EL (forwarding a letter from the addressee's wife - to evade postage charges!) from Naples to a French Colonel of the Engineers at "Corfou" with a fine oval "MINISTRO DE AZIENDA" cachet and so sent free of postage; and 1808/10 pair of ELs (one stained & one with pin-hole) from Venice to Patrichio in Corfu.
