(creases & edge wear) with part original contents headed "Surveyor General's Office, Fiji, Nasova" (the Governor's residence in Levuka) to Leeds endorsed "O.H.M.S." but treated as unpaid mail and so with manuscript "1/-" charge on the front along with mainly fine "LEVUKA/FIJI" double-arcs cds, having a very fine "LEEDS" arrival cds (1 Sept.) also on the front. Click to view full image... FIJI - RARE SHIP'S BAG USAGE OF G.B. 1d RED ON NAVAL COVER ""H.M.S. Emerald" FLAP) EX "LEVUKA" TO G.B.; 3 Dec. 1879 env. (dated by filing note on front - affecting address slightly) with "H.M.S. Emerald" flap endorsed "from Levuka" with only a GB 1d Red thought also endorsed "Via Melbourne and Brindisi", and so clearly sent in the ship's Naval Bag; the stamp cancelled on arrival in GB by London "S.M.P." Duplex (5 Feb. 1880) but also endorsed "Over One Oz" with m/s "2" charge and red London "D" in circle Inspector's Mark. HMS Emerald was at this date just returned to Fiji from a tour to Samoa & Tonga with the High Commissioner aboard; the ship was regularly used for punitive expeditions against unruly islanders around the Pacific. TO SAMOA; Fine 25 Oct. 1854 EL (folds neatly to show internal heading alongside address panel) from Missionary "J.P. Sunderland" to Rev. Nisbet at "Lalomalava" (Samoa) with interesting news of developments on the island in the very early stages of European contacts; "We are going to visit another part of Mare and also call at Lifu and then the ship returns to Mare and...goes on to Samoa...We have all got separate cottages...At Luarna (?) they have got up a new stone chapel...We shall have the pleasure of, opening it, I believe". FRENCHMEN EATEN BY CANNIBALS, ETC.; Fine 26 June 1856 E from New Caledonia (presumably from Noumea) to Brest in France via Sydney & G.B. with boxed "GB/1F60c" and fine Sydney handstruck "3" on the front, charged "8"(decimes) with backstamps of Sydney (15? Nov.), "PLYMOUTH/SHIP LETTER" (blue cds; 28 Feb. 1857), London & Brest. The contents (sadly incomplete but clearly written from New Caledonia in French by a missionary, include (translated); "...Someone shouts 'Ship in sight'. Back soon.... It is indeed a vessel which comes to tell me that 7 Frenchmen have been eaten by the natives of a coastal tribe (Ouailou) and that a warship, La Bayonnaise, should be going[?] from Noumea to Balade [small village on the NE tip of the island at the opposite end from Noumea] to avenge this atrocity." Believed to be the earliest known cover from New Caledonia with postal markings, and with graphic historical contents regarding continuing cannibal activities. (some edge stains/wear) from Canala to Valence with Ceres 10c Brown on Rose (near 4m) + 30c Pale Brown (margins in places; one corner slightly over the edge) both tied by a partly fine 2-ring "NOUMEA" cds but also having a partly fine rare 2-ring "N.C. POSTES/*CANALA*" cds alongside (and slightly beneath the 30c) as well as a partial red 2-ring "FR. PAQ. V. SUEZ" (Marseilles?) cds. The Canala PO opened in 1859 but no marks are apparently recorded before 1877, so this 1876 example may be the earliest Canala postmark.
