(some creasing & flap lost) to Paris (blue crayon - Noumea P.O.? - "Brindisi" on the front) with two fine to very fine large black triangular framed "P.D/AFFRANCHI/EN NUMERAIRE/FAUTE DE/TIMBRES COLONIAUX/SCE DES POSTES NELLE CALEDIE" marks upside down on the front along with matching 2-ring Noumea cds and boxed "PD"; plus 15 May 1877 E (part contents; from a Missionary?) to Marne with a 2-ring Noumea cds (part off edge) and matching v. fine "T" in triangle on the front, beside the superb h.s. "7" (decimes). It seems that the stamp shortages continued and not everyone chose to risk prepayment without stamps. FRENCH COLS. - NEW CALEDONIA - BOULOUPARIS - EARLY UNDATED 2-RING MARK + boxed "PD" ON 40c RED SINGLE-FRANKING COVER; Fine 29 Aug. 1877 env. to Lons le Saunier with a very fine rare undated 2-ring "N.C. POSTES/BOULOUPARI" mark (very early usage) beside the marginal Type Sage 40c Red (good to huge margins all round though rather rough in places - not tied but clearly belongs as its partial 31 Aug. cds exactly matches the one alongside) unusually placed over a superb large boxed "PD" mark (presumably struck at Boulouparis and the stamp applied in transit at Noumea?), having a fine red octagonal "POS. AN. V. SUEZ PAQ. F/1 MARS.1" d.s. nearby. Remarkably early stamped cover from this small PO [which opened in 1871 but for which no mark has been recorded until Dec. 1876]. Important Exhibition Item. (opened out for display) to Capt. de Cintre, Commander of the "Thisbe, Station de le Nle Caledonie, Sydney, par Panama" but altered to "Voie de Suez" with red "Affranchisement insuffisant"; franked by a Pair of 1853-61 40c Napoleon (close to wide margins all round) tied by v. fine Lorient "1761" diamonds (with "APRES/LE/DEPART") alongside; sent via Marseille (29 June) and Suez but did not reach Sydney until 13 Oct. (v. fine "SHIP-LETTER/SYDNEY" backstamp) because the SS Cambrian from Suez broke down at Galle and delayed the transit by a month. Believed to be the earliest recorded stamped cover addressed to New Caledonia. GERMANY - 'WINTER RELIEF FUND' PROPAGANDA BOOKLETS: Two booklets prepared by the British Political Warfare Executive in 1943 as a parody of the 1938 'Winterhilfe' booklets featuring caricatures of Himmler. One booklet (incomplete) contains a pane of 12+6pf stamps setenant with a pane of 3+2pf stamps all with full gum. The other booklet contains two panes of 10 plus interleaving, though some stamps are affected by water damage. It is believed that these booklets were distributed by the S.O.E. to the French Resistance And to Free Polish pilots serving in the Mediterranean. (2 booklets) £300
