A fascinating 211 page hand written journal written by Sgt John Richards of the 6th Dragoon Guards about his military service including the Crimean War and Indian Mutiny. This journal was written for his family after he was discharged in 1873. He was born in Monmouth and enlisted in 6th Dragoons 6/2/1852. Having arrived in the Crimea he wrote, "We had landed about a week or so when the Battle of Tchernaya took place, and in which we were employed, covering a Battery of ours in action, on the right of the attack and which lasted all day." "Landed & proceeded to Kadikoi, a little higher ground and where we remained about 8 months encamped, Heavy and Light Cavalry under York Scarlett, taking such part as was ordered for the Cavalry." The regiment returned to barracks in Canterbury after the war. They left England for India in August 1856 arriving off Calcutta 2/12/56 and proceeded on foot to barracks in Meerut. The alarm at the start of the Mutiny was sounded on 10th May while he and others were in church and was involved in immediate skirmishing around the local area where he killed several mutineers. He was part of a squadron under Captain Wardlaw that joined a Flying Column to scout the surrounding countryside and saw more skirmishing. Forming part of a larger column of 5,000 they proceeded to Delhi and the country beyond. He took part in the Battle of Narnaul 16/11/57 where they charged the enemy's guns, "A fierce rush across the intervening ground and we were amongst them, we charged through them, cutting down all and everything in our way. Our Captain in front shouting form up men in rear, and charge back through them and we returned back to the front bringing the guns." He also took part in the Battle of Gungaree 14/12/57 where he was severely wounded during the regiment's charge at the enemy guns some 900 yards away. "Gallop was sounded, and on we went at that pace, till within 150 yards or so, when our trumpeters sounded the "Charge". We in a moment as it were smashed right into the guns, almost blinded by smoke and dust and deafened by noise, our flanks overlapped theirs and we came into action hand to hand, with the Rebels in rear, the centre hacking and cutting down the gunners and such was the terrific effect this charge from such a small body had upon the enemy. It was in the last salvo from these guns, being so close to them, that I was with several others doomed at last to come to grief. My gallant horse was shot, a 9 or 12 pounder shot entered the near shoulder, passed through his belly and out on the off side and in its course to the rear carried away a good piece of the calf of my right leg, and my poor steed rushing a few yards farther, landed me right between two guns and then dropped dead leaving me on my feet. I could stand although wounded, and after a cut and thrust at a gunner who came at me and who, wounded as I was managed to do for. I was struck on the right temple by a missile of some sort of musket shot I imagine, which laid my forehead open to or nearly to the brain and which knocked me out for some time." The wounded were evacuated Agra for treatment where he stayed for over 2 months. From Agra, he returned to barracks in Meerut for a further 2 months convalescence before being declared fit for service and his participation in the Oude campaign where he was present at the attack and capture of Fort Anmetia 9/11/58, the attack and capture of Fort Shunkepore 16/11/58, action at Burgar Ghant 24/11/58, the attack and capture of Fort Chudal 26/11/58 and the attack and capture of Fort Hujedia 28/12/58. He was discharged as a Sergeant in 1873. The spine and edges have some light wear, but the contents are very clean and in good condition, a rare other ranks detail journal of his military service. With copy of Mutiny Medal roll where he is listed "Wounded severely at Gungeree 14 Dec 1857", also issued a Crimea Medal with Sebastopol clasp and Turkish Crimea Medal. (R) £200

Glass framed collection of 13 pieces of wreckage from a Messerschmitt 110 twin engine fighter from 9/ZG26 based at Barley which was shot down and crashed at Crabtree Farm, Great Bentley Essex at 1530 on 26th August 1940. The crew Werner Opper and Paul Nick were killed and buried in Colchester Cemetery and reinterred at Cannock Chase in the late 1960s. The ME110 was part of the escort to the Dornier 17s which were raiding Debden. With typed statement from original eye witness and collector, "I visited the crash site several times during the week following the crash having seen the aircraft shot down from the Hilly Fields in Colchester. My own recollection was that the plane dived out of the clouds straight into the ground. Although the aircraft was damaged by fighter action, eye witnesses maintain the guns at Bromley Pylons fired on the aircraft which appeared to receive a direct hit after which it pulled up into a climb, half looped and dived into the ground. The RAF pilots involved were P/O F.B. Sutton of 56 Sqn, but also belived to be involved were P/O P.J. Simpson and Sgt T.Y. Wallace of 111 Sqn. Glass will not be posted. (B) £100
