With original newspaper cutting, "Lieut William Sangster Borthwick, of South Yardley, Birmingham, who, clearing minefields for the last 12 months has dealt with about 1,600 mines. Born at Mintlaw, Aberdeen, he wins the George Medal. Clearing a minefield south of Dunbar, he received news of an accident in another field north of the town. Going there he found that two mines had exploded, killing three prisoners of war and injuring nine others. He swept in with mine detectors and removed all the prisoners and those killed from the minefield, a particularly dangerous operation, as the prisoners, not understanding English, tended to move about in the live minefield on seeing the clearance party approaching with stretchers. <\n> Five months later Borthwick was called to another accident on Peffer Sands minefield. He removed the bodies of four men of his company who had been killed. Helping Borthwick in the first incident was Sergeant Harold Drummond Criak of Carntyne, Glasgow, who wins the British Empire Medal." <\n>He was born 17/7/16, enlisted in the Royal Artillery with number 2035148 in Dover 12/3/37, he was commissioned 24/2/44, transferred to R.E. 20/7/44, promoted Captain 1/7/46, Major 17/7/52, retired 19/5/58 and died 26/2/95. <\n>Sold with 2 silver R.E.
