Gilgil Special Camp was established in 1947 to house Jews arrested in Palestine during the fight for an independent Jewish State of Israel. They included members of Irgun and other hard-core activists. The first internees arrived in Kenya on the S.S "Empire Heywood" in March 1947. The internees were released between March and July 1948 and the camp was closed in August, soon after the State of Israel had been established. Mail from Gilgil Special Camp to Palestine was sent by army bag to the C.I.D, Palestine Police, Jerusalem, where it was posted franked by Palestine stamps. Writers were not supposed to give any indication of their Kenya address, a rule clearly broken on three of the following six covers.
