  1912 Cover from Nassau to S.S "Mexico" at Havana franked Bahamas KEVII 1d handstamped "T / COLLECT / CENTS" with a Cuba 5p postage due stamp (corner fault) and a 1c postage stamp applied to collect the charge, each tied by a "T" in circle handstamp, violet "UNCLAIMED / RETURN TO P.O" with New York 'left' and 'Returned' handstamps and a Miami backstamp. An unusual combination of a Cuba due and postage stamp used as a due. £120-150

British Occupation. 1878 (July 23) Cover to England bearing G.B ½d (2) and 2d blue all cancelled by numeral "10" upon receipt at the London Inland Office, with a Portsmouth arrival backstamp (July 23), endorsed "via Austrian Lloyd Steamer", recipients endorsement shows it was from "L. Vassall, July 22nd 1878". Naval records show Leonard Vassall was a midshipman on H.M.S "Invincible" which was at Larnaca July 5th-31st 1878 as part of the Naval Squadron that landed the British troops, which were commanded by Sir Garnet Wolsely. Flap missing with the loss of a small part reverse, otherwise fine and the only recorded cover from the British Occupation of the island in July 1878. With B.P.A Certificate (2010). Click to view full image... 1887 (Aug 8) 1pi Postcard written from Mount Troodos Camp to England cancelled by "942" numeral with "TROODOS / CYPRUS" c.d.s below. During the summer months troops and Government Officials went to Troodos, which never had its own numeral cancel but is known to have used the "D47" numeral of Polymedia in 1884-85, whilst two items are recorded from Troodos in 1887 with the "942" numeral issued to Larnaca. Click to view full image... 1872 Entire letter from Guayaquil to Lima, the postage to Peru paid by Ecuador 1865 1r yellow horizontal pair, the supplementary rate to go by French ship paid by France 1870 25c singles (2) and 1862-71 5c vertical pair. The 5c pair tied by octagonal "GUAYUAQUIL / PAQ. FR. F No. 2" datestamp with a second strike alongside, two 'anchor' in retta cancels applied to the Ecuador pair and to one 25c stamp and the upper stamp of the 5c pair, the other 25c left uncancelled, backstamped at Lima. One 5c stamp damaged by a heavy vertical fold at right edge, a little splitting at folds and three small and unobtrusive tears to the address panel; nevertheless a rare and attractive combination cover, ex Dale Lichtenstein (1970) and Bustamente (1997).   1847 Stampless cover signed on the front by "Le Verrier", addressed in his handwriting to "Monsieur Hind, Bishops Observatory, Regents Park, London", paid in cash, with "PARIS / CHAMBRE DES PAIRS" c.d.s. Also 1860 entire letter with printed pictorial heading of the "Institut Imperial de France, Academie des Sciences", sent to Monsieur Phillips, President of the Geological Society of London, thanking him for a book, franked imperf 40c. Le Verrier discovered the planet Neptune, whilst John Hind discovered ten minor planets at the Bishops Observatory. (2). £100-120

Boule de Moulin. 1870 (Dec 20) Small cover from Bordeaux to Paris inscribed "Par Moulins - Allier", bearing imperf Bordeaux issue 20c (3 margins) and 80c (faults) each cancelled "532" with a Bordeaux c.d.s alongside. The enclosed letter includes mention of 'sending a telegram in September by Pigeon Post; apparently the Government prevented public use of this method on 27th October and the writer doubts that it has been received. The previous day he learnt of a new way - a letter of 4gms could be sent par Moulins sur Allier'. An attractive Boule de Moulin cover with interesting contents. Photo on Page 155. £300-400

  French India. 1921 (Mar 29) Registered cover from Pondicherry to Paris, the stamps washed off, three French India stamps then reaffixed to the reverse with French P.O sealing tape, both sides handstamped "ACCIDENT EN MER / CORRESPONDENCE INONDEE", with a Marseille arrival c.d.s (May 6). Probably from the "Kalyan" which arrived at Marseille on April 18th with water damaged mails; possibly from the "Cordilliere" which arrived at Marseille on May 2nd. An unusual origin for a wreck cover. £200-250

Local Posts. 1897 Cover sent within Breslau by the Jewish firm of Hansa, bearing 1½pf red and green block of four issued for the Jewish New Year with the Hebrew inscription "le shonah touwah" and the year "5658", tied by four "HANSA" datestamps and an arrival c.d.s, with a mint example of the stamp, 1962-63 commemorative covers reproducing this local, and an undated article which states this cover bears the only known block of this local stamp. German East Africa. 1891 (June 2) Cover addressed to "Major von Wissmann, Kaiserlischer Reichscommissar fur Ost Afrika, Bagamoyo", readdressed to Germany franked with Germany 20pf tied by "BAGAMOYO" c.d.s, backstamped at the German P.O at Zanzibar (June 8) and in Germany. Herman von Wissmann was a soldier and African explorer who quelled an Arab rebellion in 1888 and took Bagamoyo in 1889; he was Imperial Commissioner in GEA from 1888 to 1891 and Governor in 1895-96. A scarce early cover from Bagamoyo just eight months after the Post Office opened. Photo on Page 157. £300-400
