TITO JOSIP BROZ: (1892-1980) Yugoslav Revolutionary and Statesman, Prime Minister of Yugoslavia 1943-63 and President of Yugoslavia 1953-80. Vintage signed 4.5 x 6.5 photograph of Tito in a half length pose wearing his uniform and curiously smoking a cigarette lodged into the end of a pipe. The original Camera Press of London press portrait is from an image by Karsh of Ottawa and bears the original printed caption to the verso. Signed by Tito with his name alone in dark fountain pen ink, across a slightly darker area of the image although legible. VG £100 - 120

INDIA: LINLITHGOW MARQUESS OF (1887-1952) British Statesman, Governor-General and Viceroy of India 1936-43 & MILNER DOREEN MAUD (1886-1965) Marchioness of Linlithgow, younger daughter of Sir Frederick Milner. A very fine pair of vintage signed sepia 8.5 x 12 photographs by both the Marquess and Marchioness of Linlithgow individually, the images depicting them standing in formal full length poses, the Marquess wearing full ceremonial robes including the mantle of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India, together with medals, orders and the collar of the Knight Grand Commander and the Marchioness wearing a long silk gown and the Imperial Order of Crown of India, with a tiara upon her head. The photograph of the Marquess is by Johnston & Hoffmann of Calcutta and the photograph of the Marchioness is by Janet Jevons and both are signed by the photographer's to the lower mounts beneath the images. Signed ('Linlithgow') in bold dark fountain pen ink by the Marquess to a clear area at the foot of his image and dated 1937 in his hand, and signed ('Doreen') by the Marchioness, also in bold dark fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of her image, and also dated 1937 in her hand. Together with a fine original unsigned vintage 11.5 x 7 photograph, being a panoramic view of the Viceroy's House as seen from the Mogul Garden, by Kinsey Bros of New Delhi and bearing their blindstamp to the lower white border. GUEVARA CHE: (1928-1967) Argentine Marxist Revolutionary & Guerrilla leader, a major figure in the Cuban Revolution. D.S., Che, one page, oblong 4to, n.p. (Cuba), December 1961. The partially printed document, in Spanish, is a certificate of Honorable Mention issued to Alfonso Basilio Gowen, an Automotive worker with Unit H-5, Titanium of Cuba, for their outstanding effort in production increase for the month of December 1961. Signed by Guevara with his typically small signature, in bold ink, at the foot in his capacity as Minister for Industry. Some heavy overall age toning, light staining, surface creasing and tears to the edges and corners, resulting in some paper loss. The faults slightly affect the text but not the signature, only FR £300 - 400

WAGHORN RICHARD: (1904-1931) English Aviator, pilot of the winning aircraft in the 1929 Schneider Trophy seaplane race. Fountain pen ink signature ('H. R. D. Waghorn') and date, February 1931, in his hand on a piece. Neatly laid down to a page removed from an autograph album beneath a newspaper photograph. Together with a second, almost identical signed piece, also neatly laid down to a page removed from an autograph album alongside several newspaper portraits and an ink annotation in the hand of a collector. Autographs of Waghorn are rare as a result of his early death at the age of 26 in a flying accident. Also including Augustus Orlebar (1897-1943) British Air Vice Marshal, a Schneider Trophy winner and World Air Speed Record holder. Fountain pen ink signature ('A. H. GLENN JOHN: (1921- ) American Astronaut. T.L.S., J H Glenn Jr, one page, 4to, Houston, Texas, 28th January 1963, to Mrs. E. M. Clarke, on the printed stationery of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Glenn thanks his correspondent for her interest in the flight of the Friendship 7 spacecraft and continues 'A great deal of valuable information was obtained from my flight and the flights of Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom and Scott Carpenter. Each flight is a steppingstone in our ever-expanding manned space flight research program'. Accompanied by a printed oblong 4to illustrated brochure entitled Astronaut John H. MACKENSEN AUGUST VON: (1849-1945) German Field Marshal of World War I. D.S., Mackensen, one page, small oblong 8vo, n.p., (Falkenwalde, Stettin), 26th November 1937. The partially printed document, in German, is an official Post Office certificate, in the form of a postcard, relating to a package sent to Mackensen by Hermann Wilke, presumably signed by Mackensen upon receipt. TIRPITZ ALFRED VON: (1849-1930) German Grand Admiral of World War I. T.L.S., v. Tirpitz, with two lines of holograph text, one page, 4to, Berlin, 30th November 1926, to Herr von Schack, Master of the Horse, Estates Manager to the Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, in German. Tirpitz explains the delay in replying to his correspondent's letter, as he was moving to Berlin, and asks for his respectful thanks be given to his Royal Highness for their kind invitation to Coburg on 18th January 1927, commenting 'Since I cannot at the moment foresee how I shall be placed, I should like to be allowed one or two weeks before giving a definite promise.' NELSON HORATIO: (1758-1805) British Admiral during the Napoleonic Wars, the victor of the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805. A.L.S., Nelson & Bronte, one page, 4to, Piccadilly, 8th February 1803, to Captain Longford. Nelson informs his correspondent 'I never saw Lord Hutchinson in my life which is a full answer to your applicn.' and adds that he 'should have been happy to oblige you if it had been in my power' before remarking 'Sir William & Lady Hamilton join in best compliments….' General John Hely-Hutchinson (1757-1832) 2nd Earl of Donoughmore. Anglo-Irish Politician, Herditary Peer and Soldier. Created Baron Hutchinson in 1801. In March 1794 he obtained brevet promotion to Colonel, then became a Major-General in May 1796, a Lieutenant-General in September 1803, and a full General in June 1813. In 1811, he became Colonel of the 18th Regiment of Foot.

E. van Dulleman, thanking him for his letter and returning the photograph which he has signed, and further thanking him for a donation to the RAF Benevolent Fund. Also including a T.L.S. by Bader's secretary acknowledging van Dulleman's letter and explaining that Bader is presently in South Africa, 12th November 1965. A colour 24 x 20 print by artist Robert Taylor entitled Hurricane (1979), the First Edition print depicting four aircraft in flight. Together with a second colour 24 x 20 print by artist Robert Taylor entitled Victory Over Dunkirk (1983) depicting Tuck claiming an ME110, one of three enemy aircraft he shot down over Dunkirk on 23rd May 1940. WALLIS BARNES: (1887-1979) English Scientist & Inventor of the bouncing bomb used in Operation Chastise (The Dambusters Raid), 16th May 1943. A.L.S., Barnes, five pages, 4to, n.p., 18th September 1969, to George. Wallis writes a largely social letter to his friend, commenting that he has been in hospital for an operation on a slight hernia caused 'by a very severe backfire on a large motor mower that gave me a violent blow in my right hand groin' and further reflecting on his age, 'Growing old is no fun, and Molly & I are wondering what we shall do if & when I ever have to retire' although also referring to his work, 'At 82 years I can & do still work full time at Vickers & am full of ideas. The new submarine is showing great promise, & between that & a new type of aircraft that should do some six to seven times the speed of sound I am more than busy….And one's mind is continuously pre-occupied with problems of work. Do you remember Akela, the lone wolf in Kipling's "Jungle Stories"? Once he missed his "kill", he was himself killed by the pack that he had led for so long. I feel rather like Akela!' Wallis also writes of his two adopted sons ('whom we helped to rescue when their parents were killed by a bomb') who are living in South Africa and Australia with their families. In a postscript Wallis recounts having met Sir Francis Chichester recently and having a long, interesting talk with him, 'He wears specs for short sight. Very awkward in bad weather. He told me he licks his when salted up, & both hands are busy. Now I never thought of doing that at Cowes.' A letter of interesting content. The upper portion of the first page is a little irregularly torn away, apparently with no loss of text except presumably the letterhead address, otherwise VG £100 - 150

A printed small 8vo menu for a lunch at which Mussolini delivered a speech in his capacity as Presidente del Consiglio & Alto Commissario dell'Aeronautica, alongside Arturo Mercanti, President of the Aero Club of Italy, n.p., n.d. (c.1922-24), signed in bold black fountain pen ink by Mussolini, with his surname only, and also signed by Armando Diaz (1861-1928) Italian Field Marshal and Minister of War, also in dark fountain pen ink with his name alone. Matted in black and white alongside another portion of the same menu, either side of a reproduction image of Mussolini. Framed and glazed in a gold coloured frame to an overall size of 19.5 x 11.5.
