One never knows with you.) Why don't you give up trying to tame Italians - who are always too short for you anyway - and find yourself that nice, tall Irish boy with leather-patched elbows I've been wishing on you for so long?....Maestro Schippers finally decided to perform my "Apocalypse" which turned out to be a smasheroo. (With the audience anyway; no critic comes to my defense these days.) I've also weathered a pretty good revival of "The Consul" and finished my cycle of songs for Schwarzkopf - though I still don't know when she'll perform them' (22nd March 1966), 'Christmas in Capricorn was unusually mild this year - Niki in Greece, you in England, Manfred in Germany....I really felt a little abandoned! Fortunately in the evening we had some lovely chamber music and the Christmas tree seemed then to glow a little brighter! The rehearsals of the Savage have been gruesome! None of the singers seem to remember their roles - and there is little time for rehearsal - ....In keeping with the Met tradition there will be a "surprise" during the evening - the surprise being Leontyne Price who will sing Vissi d'arte at the "cocktail party" immediately after the twelve-tone trio! It should be fun!' (26th December n.y., [1963]), 'How very nice of you to remember me on the opening night of the Savage. It all went off with a bang (with a glamorous party afterwards at John Browning's) - but I wasn't the only person who missed you - the whole cast kept asking me reproachfully (as if it were my fault!!) "But where is Wendy?"....Niki is having a grand affair with the young actress in "Zorba the Greek" who plays the part of the little prostitute! She accuses him of having made her pregnant...Good for him!! finally.' (n.d., January/February 1964). Together with Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977) British Conductor. T.L.S., Leopold, one page, oblong 8vo, Hampshire, 20th April 1973, to Wendy Hanson, in part, 'Remembering your brilliant intelligence, I am sure you understand that chamber orchestras do not need conductors.
