Weetabix tin c 1940s with harvesting scene illustration
The following lots 512 - 518 are consigned from the collection of the family of the Hon. Patrick Lindsay
512
3" Scale Fowler Showmans Engine. This fine model, built in 1964, is a unique one off build and was purchased at great expense many years ago by Patrick Lindsay who collected only the finest quality steam engines. The engine based on a B6 demands the closest scrutiny, the detail and workmanship being high quality. The working engine has not been steamed for many years but has been run regularly on compressed air. This is a large engine and could easily be mistaken for a 4" machine.
Estimate £20,000 - £22,000
513
7 1/4" Guage 4-6-0 Locomotive and Tender. This fine loco' is an example of a London and South Western Railway (before becoming the Southern Region) H15 Class - basically a goods version of the King Arthur Class, sometimes known as a "Goods Arthur". Designed by Urie, the locomotive came into service in 1914. Although not run for a number of years, the engine has been kept and displayed in the very best of conditions. This top quality and unusual engine would only require light recommissioning to make a very usable machine.
Estimate £20,000 - £25,000
514
5" Gauge 4-6-2 "Britannia" Locomotive and Tender. This good example of this iconic locomotive has not been run for a number of years.
Estimate £7,000 - £9,000
515
5" Gauge 2-2-2 Single Wheeler Great Western Locomotive and Tender. No.1118 "Prince Christian". This is an exquisite example of perhaps the most elegant looking mid 19th Century class of locomotives. Although a working model, this engine is more a work of art to be admired. The footplate detail is stunning and the paintwork simply beautiful
Estimate £8,000 - £10,000
516
5" Gauge 0-6-0 Great Western Tank Engine. Unpainted and finished in polished brass, this attractive engine requires a little finishing.
Estimate £2,500 - £3,000
517
5" Gauge 4-6-0 Great Western Railway "King" Class Locomotive and Tender "King George V" This high quantity loco was built by Severn Lamb some years ago and has been carefully conserved and displayed since then, a fine and practical locomotive. The vendors records strongly indicate that this is a works model and he states that this model resided in the GWR headquarters at Paddington.
Estimate £10,000 - £12,000
518
5" Gauge 4-6-0 Great Western Railway "Castle" Class Locomotive and Tender "Pendennis Castle". This fine loco' was built by J. Adams some years ago and has been displayed since then. A small amount of recommissioning work would see this lovely engine back on the track which is strongly believed to have been a works model.
Estimate £10,000 - £12,000

3.5" gauge BR Standard 4-6-2 "Britannia" Class. "R.A. Riddles" No.70055 and tender
This superb model locomotive is one of those rare examples of exquisite engineering verging on an art form. The engine was built by W.(Bill) Linfield of Carterton, Oxfordshire who sadly died last year in his 99th year. Bill started the job using LBSC's "Britannia" drawings, but after a year or two switched to BR works drawings with the result that many of the details that LBSC either omitted or simplified are included in their correct appearance on the model - examples being the fitting of valve rod cross heads and guides to the cylinders and the shape of the expansion link brackets. The loco was appropriately named after the designer R.A Riddles. A silver medal at the national 1974 Model Engineer Exhibition and the LBSC Memorial Trophy in 1984 were just rewards for this superb workmanship. This free steaming copper boilered locomotive is also stated to have performed as well as it looks. The Model Engineer of November 1984, on the occasion of it winning the "Curly Bowl" for performance, described it as having "plenty of get up and go, nice even beats .. and safety valves which lifted when they should and shut when they should." The engine was thoroughly cleaned and retired from the tracks in the mid '80s and has since taken pride of place in the family home. Bill was a perfectionist in all he did and this model is worthy testimony to his skills. Offered for sale with a photographic record of the 11 year build including various newspaper clippings, 1985 boiler test certificate, tool box of firing irons and related fittings and spares. Also included is a display track section 55.5ins long and custom built crate for the locomotive.
Estimate £5,000 - £7,000

1.5" scale Allchin Traction Engine. "Royal Chester"
This example of the well respected W.J. Hughes design based on the 7nhp Allchin traction engine "Royal Chester" - the very engine Cheffins sold two years ago - is another of Bill Linfield"s masterpieces actually built some years before the Britannia. It can truly be described as the best, winning the Model Engineer Exhibition Championship Cup in 1964, the museum quality model is stated to have also been a very fine free steaming fully working engine. Supplied with a photographic record of the full construction process as well as newspaper cuttings and letters, this is without doubt the finest example that Cheffins have had the privilege to offer. The engine also comes with its own set of scale tools, little works of art in their own right including an axe, coal hammer, engineers hammer, stilsons, oil can, oil jug, and water pail, all exquisitely executed along with the brass front lamps and the jewel like rear lamp. It is interesting to note that Bill had a written offer of £4,500 for the Allchin in 1973 - a truly substantial price in those days and a reflection of the extraordinary quality of Bill's work. Also included in the sale is the custom built wooden transport case.
Estimate £4,500 - £5,500
