| 1956 CANTATORE Field Boy 4cylinder diesel TRACTOR Serial No. 0146 Bearing a very familiar resemblance to a Nuffield tractor, the Field Boy was developed by the Italian Nuffield concessionaire, Vittorio Cantatore of Moncalieri, near Turin, to suit the needs of smallholders and market gardeners in Italy in the mid-1950s. The Field Boy was deliberately styled to imitate the Nuffield, which it was it was sold alongside them by Cantatore. Fitted with a four-cylinder BMC 2.2-litre B-Series diesel engine, it was significantly smaller than the Nuffield Universal Three. A Field Boy was imported by Nuffield to the UK in 1956 for evaluation. It underwent trails in the Midlands, but was never offered for sale in the UK. This stunning example was imported by a Lincolnshire collector in a rather poor state and was then subject to a considerable restoration project. The BMC engine was tired and received a crankshaft regrind among many other mechanical repairs. It was then sent to the restoration specialists, Fred and John Goldup of Sutton St James, for some serious tinwork fettling and a very smart new paint job along with some fresh rubber all round. This tractor's first outing since its restoration was the 2012 Vintage Tractor & Heritage Show at Newark, and it also featured in an extensive three-page article in the March 2014 issue of Tractor and Farming Heritage Magazine. The tractor, No. 0146, is fitted with an underslung exhaust, coil-sprung seat but no rear linkage because there was some concern over the strength of the lift on the early models. The original Italian logbook is present, showing the first date of registration as 28 September 1956, and is available for inspection in the sales office. |
