*John Lawrence Toole (1830-1906) was an actor and theatrical manager whose father was City Toastmaster and an usher at the Old Bailey. J.L. Toole was educated at the City of London School and began life as a wine merchant's clerk. His first appearance was as Jacob Earwig in "Boots at the Swan" and he was encouraged by Dickens, who first saw him in 1852. The same year he was engaged as "stock low comedian" at the Queen's Theatre, Dublin for £2 a week. In 1854 he played the "Artful Dodger" in '"Oliver Twist" and thereafter he played many parts including "Bottom" in "A Midsummer Night's Dream". In 1869 he began a long association with the Gaiety Theatre, where his parts delighted Dickens. On tour in 1869-70, he was accompanied by Henry Irving. In 1871 he appeared as "Serjeant Buzfuz" in "Pickwick Papers". By 1874 he was earning £100 a week and toured America. In 1877 he took the Globe Theatre, and produced his own farcical sketch "Trying a Magistrate". He took over the "Folly" in 1882 and renamed it "Toole's Theatre". Four years later he produced "The Butler" at the Theatre Royal, Manchester, and in 1891 he appeared as Ibsen in J M Barrie's "Ibsen's Ghost". His last appearance was in 1896 at Rochdale, after which he became an invalid and died in 1906, leaving £79,964. His "eccentric drollery" was the outward expression of a "frolicsome, boyish, sunny nature" and he enjoyed practical joking. Simple in his tastes, he was "entirely lovable". "The last great low comedian, Toole was certainly the cleaneest". The proponderance of his work "was of the laughter-making order". His portrait hangs in the Garrick Club. "G.G." could easily by George Grossmith (1847-1912) who went in for "humorous and musical recitals", being very well-known on the stage. With his brother Weedon, he wrote the "Diary of a Nobody" (Mr Pooter).
