  "Choising". 1917 (Sep 13) Registered cover from Italy to "Commandante P. Minkwitz, ex S.S "Choising", Casa Messina Antonio, Asmara", Eritrea arrival c.d.s, censor label and cachet. Minkwitz was Captain of the "Emden" prize crew who tried to sail the "Choising" from Hodeida to East Africa to supply the "Konigsberg" with coal; they were forced into the port of Asmara in neutral Italian Eritrea where they were interned. £150-200

Lauterbach escaped). The printed stamp cancelled by violet boxed "PRISONER / OF / WAR / MAIL" and "PASSED BY CENSOR" c.d.s, circular "POST FREE / P.C / PRISONERS OF WAR". Minor edge faults, a scarce use of this stationery card, also a reproduction photo of "Emden" prisoners with Ottinger identified. Photo on Page 94. £150-200

The small cruiser "Geier" fled Singapore upon the outbreak of war and met up with "Emden". Capt. Muller found her too antiquated to be of use and order her to Yap, but with faulty engines she sought shelter in Honolulu where the crew were interned on the ship. In 1917 with the entry of the U.S.A into the war the crew were moved to Schofield Barracks, and then to mainland U.S.A.

  S.S Yorck/Glukstadt. 1916 Chile 4c envelopes franked 16c to Sweden, posted from Valparaiso by internees from the "Yorck" (2); and 1918 Chile 15c envelope franked 25c posted registered from Taltal to Sweden by an internee from the "Glukstadt". Both ships served as colliers and supply ships for von Spee's Squadron in 1914. (3). £150-200

H.M.S "Good Hope", "Monmouth", "Glasgow" and "Otranto" commanded by Rear Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock encountered Graf von Spee's squadron comprising S.M.S "Scharnhorst", "Gneisenau", "Nurnberg", "Leipzig" and "Dresden" off Coronel, Chile, on 1st November 1914. In the ensuing battle "Good Hope" and "Monmouth" were sunk with the loss of all hands (including Cradock). H.M.S "Canopus" was held back further south and so escaped the battle. Afterwards H.M.S "Invincible" and "Inflexible" were despatched to the South Atlantic to help find and destroy Graf von Spee's Squadron".
  O.J.D Ahlers. 1915 (Mar 15) 2c Postcard to Germany, from the supply ship "O.J.D Ahlers" interned in Hawaii with Hilo cancel, and a photo of the ship taken in Hawaii in 1915. Also a 1917 stampless P.O.W cover from Baguio Internment Camp in the Philippines to Sweden, probably from an interned sailor from a supply ship. (3). £100-120

  Medals - H.M.S Good Hope. 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medals, group of three all named to "211637 A.R THOMPSON A.B R.N" and Memorial Plaque (ALBERT RICHARD THOMPSON) in its original transmission box with Buckingham Palace condolence slip, also a photo believed to be Thompson and a Royal Navy sweetheart brooch. Albert Thompson, from Nottingham, was killed on H.M.S "Good Hope" at the Battle of Coronel; he is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. A fine and rare group. (4). £600-700

Able Seaman Treby, from Torquay, was killed on H.M.S "Monmouth" at the Battle of Coronel; he is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. A fine group. (3). £400-500

  Medals - H.M.S Monmouth. 1914-15 Star named to "J.17143 W. J. URIE, BOY 1 R.N"; also another 1914-15 Star (J.17038 H.W.C SARGENT A.B R.N), Victory Medal (J.4150 F.G WARD A.B R.N) and Royal Medico-Psychological Association Medal for Proficiency in Mental Nursing (B.S.L SARGENT). William John Urie, from Cardiff, was killed on H.M.S "Monmouth" at the Battle of Coronel; he is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. He was advanced to Ordinary Seaman on October 22nd, nine days before his death, but the medal was named with the rank of Boy 1. (4). £200-250

The British Fleet arrived at the Falkland Islands on December 7th for coaling, H.M.S "Canopus" having been run aground as a fixed base defence. Unaware of the British fleet's presence "Gneisenau" and "Nurnberg" were sent on the following day to attack the wireless station at Port Stanley, the rest of the German Squadron following slightly behind. The two German cruisers were spotted and fired upon by "Canopus" and the British fleet steamed out and chased the German ships, which split into two groups. "Scharnhorst" and "Gneisenau" were pursued by H.M.S "Inflexible", Invincible" and "Carnarvon", the light cruisers "Nurnberg", "Leipzig" and "Dresden" with support ships were pursued by H.M.S "Glasgow", "Kent", "Cornwall", "Bristol" and "Macedonia". The Germans were outgunned and short of ammunition, four of their cruisers and two supply ships being sunk, with S.M.S "Dresden" the only cruiser to escape. The only British casualties occurred on H.M.S "Kent", damaged by shell fire from the "Nurnberg".
  Medals - H.M.S Otranto. British War Medal, named to "LIEUT. G.J WILLDIGG R.N.R", with Royal Naval Reserve Decoration, KGV (hallmarks for 1922) and a silver medallion "Souvenir of the Visit of R.M.S Antrim, Captain Inglefield, Antwerp 23rd July 1906". Accompanying paperwork shows Willdigg was appointed to H.M.S "Otranto" on 7th August 1914 and was present at the Battle of Coronel. The Royal Naval Reserve Decoration was gazetted to Lieut-Cmdr Willdigg on 27th Feb. 1924. (3). £150-180

  Original copies of signals received in England from the C. in C. 1st Fleet on Naval Signal forms, the first received on Dec. 9th "Scharnhorst Squadron has been engaged by Admiral Sturdees Squadron off Falkland Islands yesterday. Scharnhorst Gneisenau Leipzig sunk. Nurnberg & Dresden escaped & being pursued. British casualties very small", the second received on Dec. 10th "Admiral Sturdee reports Nurnberg was also sunk on December 8th, search for Dresden proceeding". A unique pair of contemporary reports of the action. (2). £200-300

Medals - Battle of the Falklands

  Miniature British War Medal with 28 differing bars including "EMDEN 9 NOV 14", "FALKLAND IS. 8 DEC 14" and "GERMAN EAST AFRICA", probably a pattern piece with proposed bars for various actions of the War. The original intention was to issue campaign clasps to the war medal, but this was abandoned as impractical due to the numbers recommended, 79 by the army and 68 by the navy. Very unusual and rare.   H.M.S Bristol. 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medals, group of three all named to "184314 G. WALKER SLMR MTE. R.N" (SLMR on War and Victory medals). Sail Maker Charles Walker served in the navy from 1901 until 1922; he was on H.M.S "Bristol" during the Battle of the Falklands. (3). £250-300

  H.M.S Carnarvon. Royal Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, KGV, named to "PLY 9638 HENRY HALL PRIVATE R.M.L.I". Hall, from Wolverhampton, joined the R.M.L.I in 1899, served on H.M.S "Carnarvon" at the Battle of the Falklands and was awarded the L.S & G.C Medal in June 1915. He was then drafted into the 1st R.M Battn (R.N.D) and was killed at Gavrelle Windmill during the Battle of Arras on 28 April 1917. £100-120

Stoker Petty Officer Davis served in the navy from 1902 until 1921, and was on "Inflexible" during the Battle of the Falklands. (3). £250-300

  H.M.S Kent. 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medals, group of three named to "J.9406 A.F.P GIBSON A.B. R.N", also Naval Field Gun Competition medal with reverse engraved "Olympia 1919 A. Gibson R.N". Gibson served in the navy from 1910 until 1922 and was on H.M.S "Kent" from 3 October 1914 until June 1918 seeing action at the Battle of the Falklands; in 1919 he participated in the famous Naval Field Gun Competition at Olympia. A fine group. (4). £600-800

At the start of the war the Cruiser "Konigsberg" under Captain Leoff was at Dar-es-Salaam with the "Konig" and "Mowe"; these two ships were scuttled in Dar-es-Salaam harbour, the "Konigsberg" escaping to act as an independent raider off German East Africa. After the start of the war some mail from German East Africa (including from the "Konigsberg") was carried to Zanzibar by H.M.S "Pegasus" but this postal route ceased when the "Konigsberg" attacked and sank the "Pegasus" in Zanzibar harbour on Sept. 20th, where it was undergoing repairs. The "Konigsberg", short of coal then sailed 7 miles up the Rufiji River, mail from the ship being posted with stamps at Lindi and the K.D.M.S datestamp no longer used in an attempt to maintain security. German stamps carried on "Konigsberg" were issued and used in German East Africa, with G.E.A mails carried along the coast by dhows, two of which were captured by the British. H.M.S "Weymouth", "Dartmouth" and "Chatham" located the "Konigsberg" on 1st November, the "Newbridge" being sunk as a block ship in the channel out of the Rufiji, with H.M.S "Fox" and "Goliath" joining the blockading force. The Monitors "Severn" and "Mersey", despatched from England, were sent up the Rufiji River and shelled the "Konigsberg", which was scuttled on 11th July 1915. The Germans removed the ships guns for use in the war on the land.
