India. 1931 (Jan 19) Indian Round-Table Conference notepaper bearing KGV 1924-26 ½d - 1/- and Bradbury Wilkinson 2/6, 5/- and 10/- each cancelled by "INDIAN ROUND TABLE CONFERENCE" c.d.s on the final day of the conference. This was the first of three conferences held in London in 1930-32 to try to achieve constitutional reform in India. Fine and rare with all G.B stamps then on sale. Photo on Page 42. £600-800

Soho 26 Sept. 1835" with red oval "PAID SHIP LETTER / LONDON" datestamp applied in error, cancelled with a red crutched cross and in manuscript, backstamped with the correct "SHIP LETTER / LONDON" datestamp with datestamps of Edinburgh (Sep 26) and London (Sep 29), charged 2/-. The part letter includes "this is the first letter I have sent by the steam vessels - a treble letter which will only cost 2/- which is cheaper than a parcel of the smallest size".   Officers Concession Rate. 1868 Cover endorsed "Topaze, Panama 21/4/68" and "Officers Letter" with crest of the "Topaze" on the flap, franked 1d (2) + 6d pair paying the double concession rate of 1/2 (1/- + 2d transit fee across Panama), all cancelled upon arrival in London, May 12 arrival backstamps. The cover opened out and a little trimmed on three sides (the reverse reduced by a further 1cm at base), the flap separated and rejoined with hinges, nevertheless very rare, the only double 7d concession rate cover we have seen. £100-150

  Ackworth School. 1841 (Jan 27) 1d Mulready lettersheet containing the printed notice "Ackworth School (1st) Month (27th) 1840 [altered to 1841], To (William France), Thy application for the name of (Esther Beardmore) to be entered on the List for Admission into this School, has been received, and is entered accordingly. A vacancy for the child will probably occur (in about 2 or 3 months...), Thy Friend, Thomas Pumphrey", used with red Maltese Cross, Pontefract backstamp (JY 28), stereo number removed upon opening and tiny file hole, otherwise fine and scarce. Also 1843 (Oct 31) letter from Ackworth School written and signed by Thomas Pumphrey, bearing a 1d red with "ACKWORTH" undated circle on the front. Ackworth was a well known Quaker School.   Ackworth School. 1841-42 1d Mulready lettersheets containing a printed Quarterly Report of Conduct and Class-work, stereo A57 with report for William Wormall headed "MONITORIAL SCHOOL" posted to Mould Green, Huddersfield, dated 7th April 1841; and stereo A77 with report for Henry Taylor headed "UPPER SCHOOL (3rd) CLASS" dated 2nd August 1842 posted to Malton, both with black Maltese Crosses and Pontefract backstamps. Click to view full image... 1886 (Mar 11) 2d Mulready envelope stereo a203 addressed to "Mr J.W Palmer, 281 Strand, W.C" with London W.C C.X squared circle datestamp at lower right. The stamp dealer J.W Palmer posted several original 1d and 2d Mulreadys to himself in 1886, most of which were incorrectly charged 2d, the charges later cancelled after he complained to the Post Office; unusually this envelope never received such a charge. A fine and scarce late use of this 2d envelope. With Philatelic Foundation Certificate (1976) incorrectly stating "cancelled by favour" - these Mulreadys were correctly posted and undoubtedly passed through the post. Photo on Page 50. £600-700

Also c.1844-46 newspaper cuttings about the secret opening of letters (c.35) which led to production of Punch's "Anti-Graham" Mulready caricature, and free franks signed by Graham (2). 120 Proofs of the Thackeray caricature were produced, with a similar number then taken from the defaced plate.   1840 (June 16) Cover with "Pre Paid / 1840" within a foliate oval frame embossed on the front, the reverse with an embossed comic scene of a piper leading two dogs entitled "WHIGS AWA'" and the publishers name "Westwood", posted from Oxford to London prepaid 1d in cash, despatch and arrival datestamps on the front. A rare and unusual envelope, the reverse presumably with a political message, the first example we have seen. £180-220
