Jean Antoine Belleteste came from a renowned family of ivory carvers. His studio was based at rue Vivienne, Paris, where his son, Antoine Belleteste also worked with him. He was succeeded by his other son, Louis Charles Vincent Belleteste in 1791 and many other family members are recorded as working at the workshop and later in Dieppe. Click to view full image... ATTRIBUTED TO ERCOLE FERRATA (ITALIAN, 1610-1686) OR DOMENICO GUIDI (ITALIAN, 1625-1701): A MID-17TH CENTURY ROMAN GILT BRONZE RELIEF DEPICTING A FEMALE SAINT HOLDING A CLOTH
of oval form, the female saint emitting rays of light, with clouds around her and two winged putti marks appearing from the clouds, holding a cloth with an imprint of a figure of a male saint holding a book and lilies, flanked by a pair of putti, one with wings, within an interior with panelled walls, the relief later cut with a hole for a key, raised on a modern bronze stand with rectangular base,
28.5cm high
The tentative attribution to Ercole Ferrata or Domenico Guidi is based on the thematic and stylistic similarity of the present relief to a small bronze relief from the collection of Dr Charles Avery that was attributed to those sculptors. The Avery relief depicts two winged putti holding Saint Veronica's veil, and was sold at Chiswick Auctions, London, 21 June 2016, lot 306. For example the winged putto on the left of both plaquettes, strikes a very similar pose as he supports the cloth, with a column to the background. The Avery attribution was based on the similarity of that bronze relief to a set of marble reliefs set over the doorways of the choir of Borromini's church of Sant Agnese in Agone, Piazza Navona, Rome, finished by Ferrata in 1658 and Guidi in 1669. They depict the same sort of cherubs as they bear the symbolic attributes of Agnes's martyrdom. This important church also houses a small gilt stucco relief by Algardi, depicting St Agnes appearing to St Constance, and incorporating more of these delightful winged putti.

Click to view full image... ATTRIBUTED TO JACQUE-EDME DUMONT (FRENCH, 1761-1844): A TERRACOTTA FIGURE OF A NUDE BACCHANTE
the female figure reclining on her front, with long flowing hair and resting on an upturned urn, with an upturned cup and grapes beside her, on a naturalistic integral base, 23.5cm long
This wonderfully modelled terracotta can be attributed to Dumont based on the delicate and precise modelling apparent in the details such as her lips, nose, eyes and the vines at her side, as well as its similarity to other known works by the sculptor such as the 'Standing Woman coming out of the Bath', sold Calmels, Paris, 19 May 1995, lot 60. Both feature the distinctive elongated physique and relatively small head.
Dumont trained under the important sculptor Augustin Pajou, and his influence is apparent in many of his fine terracotta studies. He won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1788 and was therefore working in Italy from 1788 until 1793, when he returned to France. He was hoping to secure public commissions from the Revolutionary Convention but instead began producing small scale statuettes, reliefs and medals, of which the present Bacchante is typical. Later in his career he achieved public recognition winning numerous official commissions including works for the Louvre and the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel. His terracotta statue of Paris is now in the Metropolitan Museum, New York.

Click to view full image...Click to view full image... AN 18TH CENTURY SPANISH 'ALLA CERTOSINA' IVORY INLAID PARQUETRY CASSONE
the top profusely inlaid with a scrolling circular design flanking a central chequered panel with numerous borders of geometric motifs, the front with three fielded panel doors, the central panel flanked by a pair of inlaid vases of flowers, the sides similarly inlaid, the inside of the hinged lid inlaid with geometric forms within three circular fields, fitted with a compartment to the right side with a hinged lid, 124cm wide x 58cm deep x 65cm high
Alla Certosina decoration was probably first used in Catalonia, Spain, and refers to the technique when small holes are carved into the wood and carved pieces in contrasting colour, either of other wood, bone or ivory are applied. The name 'alla certosina' is derived from a Carthusian church in Certosa, Pavia, where there is an altarpiece worked in this same technique. For this reason it was thought that the technique was of Italian origin, but many academics now believe these pieces were produced in Catalonia due to the geometric designs that were used rather than any figurative decoration, but that they may well have been produced for the Italian market. The geometric inlay also shows the influence of Middle Eastern art, where the technique of decorating wood with inlay of ivory and bone in ornate patterns had been in use for many years. These stylistic influences spread from the Eastern Mediterranean through Italy and Spain during the 16th century, when chests of this type were first produced. An early example is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, Inv. No. 7223-1860, dating to 1500. This cassone is of similar to form to the present example, the front has three square panels flanked by geometric inlay including vases of floral sprays, and the top is inlaid with a chessboard. Experts have suggested that the use of the chessboard indicates that these chests were designed to be placed in the middle of a room and used as a table or seat. As well as the practical use of the chessboard for gaming purposes, the chequers provide an attractive contrast to the dense scrolling and more naturalistic inlay throughout the rest of the cassone. Ivory and ebony counters, chessmen and dice would have been stored in the small compartment within the chest.
A further example dated to 1550-1650 is in the Victoria and Albert Museum and features almost identical inlaid decoration to the front panel as the present example, with the three squares interspersed by distinctive stylised vases of floral sprays. (Inv. No. 7224-1860).

looking slightly to dexter, his open collar shirt with a tasselled tie, the back inscribed in the cast 'made in **** by R. Shout HOLBORN', the bust raised on a moulded rectangular base with C scrolls to the edges, over on an integral waisted, cylindrical socle, 47cm high
The present bust is of identical form to a known plaster bust by Robert Shout that is now in the Garrick Club, London. Their example was presented to the Club by Thomas F. Savany, 1834, or George Raymond, 1835, or John Poole, 1836. Both plaster examples are direct copies of a marble bust which is now at Windsor Castle by Pieter Scheemakers II (1691-1781). A further marble bust of Shakespeare of this type and by Scheemakers is at Trinity College Dublin. At least two other plaster busts of this type are known to have been made by Shout's firm; they made a series of plaster busts for Lord Bridport's library including a bust of Shakespeare in 1806, and a similar series was made for Salter's Hall in 1827.
Robert Shout started his illustrious firm in 1778 with his uncle Benjamin Shout from his home address at 18 High Holborn, London. Described as 'Sculptors and Masons', on their business cards, they specialised in plaster works including producing copies of contemporary and antique figures and portrait busts such as the present example, both singly and in series. Robert Shout also produced his own designs and surviving drawings include designs for wall monuments and other Neoclassical style tombs and architectural ornaments. The Shouts remained in partnership until Benjamin's death in 1811, after which, Robert bought the remaining half and continued the firm until around 1830.
As well as copies of famous sculptures, the firm was known to have produced functional items, such as figural colza lamps in plaster (see lot 886, 17 October 2017, Sotheby's, New York) as well as larger figural torcheres (see Christie's, London, 26 October 2016, lot 143). Robert Shout also produced a patinated plaster bust of George III, an example of this bust was recently sold at Christie's, London for £9000. (lot 113, 26 October 2016).
