Click to view full image... A PAIR OF FRENCH NAPOLEON III PERIOD SILVERED BRONZE FLOOR STANDING LAMP BASES ATTRIBUTED TO FERDINAND BARBEDIENNE AND DESIGNED BY HENRY CAHIEUX (1825-1854) CIRCA 1855
the simulated bamboo shafts supporting the reservoirs cast in relief with classical maidens, raised on triform bases cast with panther head monopediae terminating in paw feet, later fitted for electricity, with frosted glass shades, 181cm high overall (2))
These impressive floor-standing lamps feature distinctive Pompeian style tripod bases identical to those exhibited by Barbedienne at the Exposition Universelle of 1855 and purchased by Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III. The faux bamboo stems ornamented with hooks terminating in flower buds and raised on tripod bases with paw feet were features of these 'Candélabres antiques porte-lampes' that Henry Cahieux designed and Barbedienne cast for this exhibition. Empress Eugenie was so fond of this fashionable design that she order several versions of these lamps. It is recorded that she bought a pair for her dressing room at the castle of Saint-Cloud, and she ordered two further pairs in 1858 for her palaces at the Compiègne and Fontainebleau, these are now in the National Museum of the Château de Compiègne.
Prince Napoleon also ordered a pair from Barbedienne for his famous Pompeian House at 16-18 Avenue Montaigne, the mansion that was developed from the site of the Pavillon des Beaux-Arts of the aforementioned Exposition Universelle of 1855. Pompeian House was decorated throughout in the most desirable fashion of the day, the Neo-Grec taste, and these ornate lamp bases epitomised that luxurious style. The Pompeian House lamps feature the same stands as the present pair but are surmounted by amphora shaped tops, and can be seen in a contemporary engraving of a party held there that featured in L'Illustration of February 14, 1860. They are also visible in an early photograph by Pierre-Ambroise Richebourg (1810-1875), showing the atrium of the Pompeian House, around 1860. the pierced reservoir decorated with scrolling flowers and foliage over the adjustable stem terminating in a triform base with dragon head decoration and dragon handles, the distinctive shade with parcel gilt decoration of a dragon, 170cm high when fully extended.

Those lamps also featured the pierced foliate decoration, and the use of stylised dragons is typical of his designs. More specifically, the mounts used at the base of this lamp are directly comparable to those used on the 'Armoire Japonisante' signed by Edouard Lièvre and today in a private collection. (D. Alcouffe, Connaissance des Arts, Edouard Lièvre, Paris, 2004, no. 228, pp. 10 and 11). Click to view full image...Click to view full image... A FINE PAIR OF SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY FRENCH 'JAPONISME' PATINATED AND PARCEL GILT BRONZE FIGURES OF A JAPANESE MAN AND WOMAN
the female figure holding a fan in her right hand and a parasol in her left the male figure wearing traditional dress and also holding a fan, on rectangular bases with canted angles over Oriental style plinths cast with elephant-head feet, 62cm high
These exceptional bronze figures were produced in France during the middle of the 19th century, probably just after 1858, when after 200 years Japan opened trade with Europe. This resulted in a huge influx of Japanese objects of art entering Europe and many artists and designers embraced this new style, incorporating elements into their own designs. The Japanese style, known in France as 'Le Style Japonisme' became extremely fashionable throughout the last decades of the 19th century. The present pair of bronzes are unsigned, although other examples have appeared at auction and tentatively attributed to Orientalist sculptors such as Charles Cordier and Emile Guillemin (see Christie's, New York, 4 March 2014, lot 252 and Sotheby's, Paris, 5 November 2014, lot 317A). Cordier in particular produced a bronze geisha lamp base for the Salon Japonais at William H. Vanderbilt's Fifth Avenue mansion in a similar style to the present pair. The highly finished surface treatment also relates to Japanese bronzes of the same period, for example compare the execution and quality of the casting to the important bronze by Miyao Zu featuring in lot 173. The elephant head feet that decorate the bases of these bronzes are also a typical feature of the Japonisme style, and also feature in lots 162, 163 and 164 of this sale.

Provenance:
Consigned for sale by a direct descendent of the first owner, Sergeant Groves.
This elegant French clock was produced in Paris but made for the English market and would have been sold by one of the prestigious retailers here. The unusual 'campaign' style travelling case is very rare and may well have been specially commissioned for the clock and its military owner. The case is of similar design to the campaign furniture that was produced throughout the 19th century, typified by the plain rectangular, fold down brass handles and brass corner mounts that are also used in the present travelling case. By the 1850's several London retailers such as the Army and Navy Society were producing whole suites of campaign furniture for the military gentleman to take on campaign, including camp beds, chests of drawers, tables and smaller items such as canteens of silver and even candlesticks. Although stationed at Canterbury during this period, the 3rd Dragoon Guards were posted to India on 10 October 1884 and so perhaps this clock travelled to India with Sergeant Groves, in the special case that was designed for such a journey.
For another example of a carriage clock with campaign style travelling case, see Bonhams, London, 29 June 2017 lot 110.
