A PAIR OF REGENCY PATINATED AND GILT BRONZE AND CUT GLASS HUNG CANDELABRA CIRCA 1815 the fluted central stems each issuing a pair of foliate cast branches terminating in urn shaped nozzles with leafy collars, below a tier of branches terminating in arrow headed lustres, with anthemion finials above, raised on panther monopodia plinth bases, later drilled for electricity, 57cm high The design for the bases of these candelabra is based on an ancient Roman prototype, shown in an etching by the architect Charles Heathcote Tatham of a Roman marble tripod, published in 'Etchings of Ancient Ornamental Architecture drawn from the Originals in Rome and Other Parts of Italy during the years 1794, 1795, and 1796, 1799'. The important Regency designer Thomas Hope was also inspired by this etching and the design is visible in his table illustrated in 'Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, pl.15, fig. 1.'
