Reg. No. MVT 645
Chassis No. 612044
Engine No. S1894
Body No. B7567
After WWII SS Jaguar, for obvious reasons, became known simply as Jaguar and the post-war market was treated to a healthy line up of vehicles including 1.5-, 2.5-, and 3.5 litre saloons. These early post-war cars, retrospectively known as the Mark IV, gained a strong following, the export market was an important part of Jaguar's business and this example of the rare and desirable 3.5 litre was sent to Brylaw Motors, Sydney, Australia on the 30th January 1948.
The extensive history file includes a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate showing this matching numbers saloons origins on 17th October 1947, the file chronicles a good deal of the history from the mid 1980's onwards. Some receipts and invoices for work in Australia are present but the first evidence of its repatriation date from 1989 along with copious correspondence regarding registration and subsequent restoration work. Finished in black over green the straight six 3.5 litre Jaguar appears in mellowed condition complete with toolkit, the interior shows smart grey leather upholstery and a dash and instruments in apparently original, unrestored order. In the current ownership since 2006 the Jaguar has been rarely used and is offered for sale with a quantity of spares which include side lamps, distributor etc, the vendor states that this is a well sorted car that is a real head turner and powerful enough to embarrass far more modern cars. Unlike many trailer queens this is a car ready for use that will be equipped with a fresh battery and in running order at the time of sale, a luxurious car for the discerning buyer, offered with history file, original service manual and V5C documentation.

Reg. No. GCJ 665D
Chassis No. 1072109
This barn find Fiat has been family owned from new with just two owners, the chassis number identifies it as an F model with the 3/4 sunroof and conventionally opening doors. Consigned from a deceased's estate, the family inform us that the blue Fiat was originally purchased from T E Housden and Son of Gamlingay (label present) and was used purely for local journeys around Cambridgeshire, the recorded mileage is just 47,436 and believed to be correct. Stored in the dry barn for around 16 years the 500 still bears a Running In sticker to the windscreen, the red and cream vinyl interior looks to be in fine order and the internal blue paintwork appears similarly fresh. Externally it is apparent that the driver's door bottom and adjacent front panel have been attacked by the rust worm, one hubcap is absent and the chrome trim to the Fiat badge on the front has a small section missing. In the engine bay the original factory warning sticker in English and Italian is present along with the last oil change sticker, presented in barn find condition and complete with the original owners Instruction Book, key and a current V5 document.
A real "on trend" car in very original order.

Reg. No. PSJ 697
Frame No. 22536
Engine No. 580 KX 387
In 1938 the Model KX was Royal Enfield's flagship and top of their vast 18 model range. The KX differed from the more common Model K in having pressed steel fork blades, QD interchangeable wheels and oil sump integral with the crankcase. Probably the most powerful road going motorcycle available pre-war, the KX was capable of 80mph performance in solo form thanks to the immense 1140cc side valve V twin powerplant. PSJ 697 (formerly GPJ 225, a Guildford Surrey number) was first registered in June 1938 and, according to the buff and green continuation logbooks supplied, stayed in the Home Counties between 1959 and 1973 at least. In 1985 the KX was resident in Aylesbury and during that 13 year ownership some restoration work was carried out for which some receipts are present, it is believed further work was carried out at a later date, a pre-restoration photograph is on file. An 8 year ownership preceded the current 9 year residence in Yorkshire, in both cases the KX formed part of a private collection. The current custodian has ridden the KX once only but expects to present the nicely mellowed machine for sale in running order at the sale. Offered with an original ‘Spares and Replacement Parts' booklet, ‘Hints and Tips' booklet, May 1953 MotorCycling magazine with detailed article, the aforementioned buff and green logbooks and current V5C. A mighty and rare example of Royal Enfield's pre-war glory days, The Model KX was, as their 1938 brochure stated ‘The Last Word in Luxury Motorcycling'.

Reg. No. OUM 151
Frame No. SC 1361
Engine No. RD 1360
The Edward Turner designed ‘Square Four' has a long history having first seen the light of day in 1930 as a 500cc machine, a continual process of improvement and re-design eventually saw the 90 plus mph Mk1 appear in 1949. OUM 151 is a fine example of the MK1 and according to the Draganfly Motorcycles Dating Certificate was despatched from the Ariel works, complete with sidecar on the 13th September 1951 to W Marsden & Sons Ltd of Headingly, Leeds. The history file contains a copy of the relevant page of the work despatch book showing that 12 machines with consecutive registrations were sent to Marsdens in the September period. Further documentation reveals that Mr E E MacDonald of Miles Hill Road in Leeds was the first owner. The copious receipts in the history file show that the previous custodian of OUM 151 spent considerable sums of money on parts during a restoration in 2008/9. In recent years the Square Four has formed part of a collection and has remained unused showing just 164 post restoration miles on the Smiths speedo' unit, the vendor expects it to be presented at the sale in running order but of course the usual recommissioning is advised prior to road use. Square Fours are quite unique machines and much sought after today by discerning collectors, a well presented example that currently still resides in its native Yorkshire and is complete with V5C documentation.

Click to view full image... 1954 1,000cc Ariel 4G Mk2
Reg. No. UEH 875
Frame No. KR 453
Engine No. PL 449
The Mk2 Square Four became known as the ‘Four Piper' due to the new configuration of the cylinder head as opposed to the two exhaust pipe arrangement on the Mk1 (see previous lot). This redesign helped to elevate the ‘Squariel' into the hallowed realms of the true 100mph motorcycle whilst still maintaining its image as a gentleman's noble steed. The accompanying green continuation logbook shows that from 1964 until at least 1967 UEH 875 was resident in Yorkshire where it still resides today. Information supplied by a previous custodian indicates that the bike was restored in the early 1990's, the near complete run of MOT certificates from August 1990 onwards would seem to back this up on mileage as the reading drops from 43,456 in September 1991 to 1,484 in March 1993. The last MOT in June 2009 shows 22,237 miles indicating little use in the previous 7 years. Currently in a private collection the Ariel carries a mellowed patina, original and unmangled slot head engine case screws and original tyre pump. Some prospective owners may wish to re-finish certain areas whilst others will enjoy a machine in very useable order that appears in its working clothes. Little used recently the vendor expects the Square Four to be in running order at the sale, offered with current V5C documentation another machine for the connoisseur.

Reg. No. CXP 101
Frame No. E12393
Engine No. E12446
An extremely rare machine indeed and believed to be one of only a dozen or so in roadworthy condition. The 500cc V twin from Birmingham must rank as one of the most aesthetically pleasing machines produced pre-war and was only in production for 3 years. This London registered example CXP 101 has been in the same family ownership from new, Uncle Jim bought the outfit in 1936 and was the proud owner for the next three decades until it was passed on to his nephew who also owned it for a similar period. During this second ownership period it's fair to say that the outfit fell into a state of neglect and upon passing to the next generation (the son in law, the third and current custodian) it was due a full restoration. The work has now been completed to a high standard and both bike and sidecar are presented in magnificent restored condition, the outfit appears as new and it is apparent that there has been great attention to detail. The Swallow 9D De-Luxe Touring sidecar has new timberwork and maroon upholstery and is finished in black with a green panel to match the bikes fuel tank, the bike itself has a chrome tank with the afore mentioned green panel and similar highlights to the wheel rims. The vendor has been in possession for 10 years and states that the only known deviation from standard is the electronic regulator, he has kept photos of the outfit with previous family members and friends back to Uncle Jim's first ownership, copies will be supplied along with copies of the original handbook and parts manual, the old style logbook and current V5C document. A highly desirable, exclusive and uncommon British V twin, this is only the second to be offered by Cheffins in 10 years and is an opportunity for true connoisseurs to acquire an example with impeccable provenance that should not be missed.

Reg. No. 481 YUF
Frame No. B28873
Engine No. MTS/D 96033/5
The Board Track inspired special, is a true masterpiece of instinctive design and engineering by Roger Lye, retired proprietor of the fondly remembered Lyco Engineering. Roger relates that the starting point for the special was the acquisition of the 1934 J.A.P. V twin side valve MTS/D engine which had been purchased in what appeared to be ‘ex-pond' condition. Subsequent investigation revealed absolutely no wear internally at all and it became clear that this was an unused engine complete with magneto and carburettor. The magneto was subsequently subject to a full rebuild whilst the brand new carb' was liberated for another of Rogers projects and a spare TT unit was fitted. Over a period of time Roger conceived the idea of a Board Track Racer inspired machine that would be suitable for road use and set about this unique build in his well equipped workshop. The frame is a rigid 1947 Norton item which has been skilfully extended to accommodate the V Twin power-plant, the forks are Webb heavy weight girders which have been re-spindled, re bushed, and fitted with new damper stars of Rogers own manufacture. The front wheel and brake plate are from a 1928 Raleigh and have been rebuilt with new bearings and new brake shoes whilst the rear wheel is ex rigid Norton and is also fully refurbished. The Norton "Dolls Head" gear box was chosen for its suitably slim styling and positive stop nature, equipped with a hand clutch and an exquisitely engineered hand change lever it blends in seamlessly to the overall design. The primary drive sprocket is a spliced Westlake Speedway type and sits under a beautiful modified racing Sunbeam half cover. The combination fuel and oil tank was designed and built from scratch, (the original polystyrene pattern will be made available), final fabrication in steel was carried out by Competition Fabrications who also manufactured the drop style handlebars. The ‘blackadised' bars are equipped with period inverted levers, a decompression lever, advance/retard and a "special" lever. The unique stubby exhaust pipes are linked to a hidden silencer mounted between the engine plates via butterfly valves, the "special" lever opens and shuts these to give town, country and nutcase settings. The dainty toolbox is from a Royal Enfield Flying Flea and the whole plot is finished in a unique dark red with the builders own inspired logo. On inspection the starting routine was explained and, 2 kicks later, the V twin barked into life, sitting on the well formed leather saddle it was apparent that the radical looking handlebars gave a supremely comfortable riding position and Roger was at pains to point out that the Lyclone had performed faultlessly to date and has less than 200 miles on its effectively brand new engine. Potential buyers should be in no doubt as to the quality of this build both internally and externally, a 100% British pre-war V Twin that is utterly unique and utterly practical. Roger's bikes have featured in several magazines over the years and he has stated that he'll be very happy to assist the new custodian with information and advice. Offered for sale due to space requirements, other projects and general wear and tear on the owner. The last MOT expired in 2011 but the Lyclone is of course now exempt, and is registered as a 1947 Norton on the current V5C document.

Reg. No. N/A
Frame No. 2223
Engine No. JOSZ/Z/77176/S
In the 1950's TT rider Ernie Barrett embarked on a project of building racing machines to be available in 250, 350 and 500cc forms utilising his own frame design and the latest engine offerings from J.A.Prestwich his near neighbour in Tottenham. Marketed under the brand name Phoenix it's not known how many racers were eventually produced but Ernie successfully rode the 250cc version to 12th place in the 1953 Lightweight TT identical to the one offered here. Presented in racing livery with the correct and rare dry sump all alloy JAP 250cc Sprint engine breathing through an Amal GP carb' and coupled to a 5 speed Albion gearbox, the long circuit tank is of welded aluminium construction and bears a hand painted Phoenix emblem, the distinctive Earles type forks to the front give an aggressive steering angle. This actual machine is documented in former owner Paul Ingham's volume "Excelsior and It's Racing Rivals", it is shown in action in the 1960's when owned by Frank Heath who was racing it fitted with a 250cc Benelli engine. "British 250cc Racing Motorcycles" by Chris Pereira depicts Ernie Barrett in action at Scarborough 1955 aboard his 250, a 3 page article by Vic Willoughby in The Motor Cycle (April 1952 (?) copy supplied) covers the full contemporary story of the bike and Ernie's hopes for the future development along with some action pictures. Interestingly only three frames are mentioned as being in the workshop which may indicate how many machines were actually produced (Ernie had more commercial success with his subsequent production of Phoenix scooters). In the current ownership for a good number of years the Phoenix has been returned to its correct form and cared for with the dry sump all aluminium JAP rebuilt utilising a Triumph piston which increased the bore size by 2mm, just one outing to the North Weald Sprint and some local East Anglian shows are under the belt otherwise it has formed part of a display at the family business. The vendor states that he has ridden it and run through all of the gears but it will require properly setting up before any aggressive use. A most uncommon example of a well documented British Racing 250 that will cause a stir at track day parades and is supplied with a file of copy articles, copy JAP engine blueprints as well as some of Ernie Barrett's racing career on the Phoenix.

The SR variant of the TR6 was a USA only model and, in the three years of production less than 700 are recorded as having been produced. This gleaming example came back to these shores in 2013 and is a restored machine finished in the correct Alaskan White with Pacific Blue stripes to the slimline tank. The restoration was carried out by Philip Clarke Classics of Dartford in Kent and just 202 miles have been ridden since completion, the current custodian having just used it for riding around the villages before ill health somewhat curtailed his two wheeled activities. A real beauty that is fitted with Boyer Bransden electronic ignition and is offered for sale with copy owner's handbook, manual as well as an unused Haynes manual, purchase receipt and a spare hand painted registration number plate. An MOT certificate valid until 31st August is present along with current V5C documentation. Strike a Steve McQueen pose!

Reg. No. TYM 470
Frame No. A54948
Engine No. 57/G80S 130822
The 500 version of the Matchless pushrod single is a far rarer beast than its 350 stable mate and is perfectly capable of keeping up with modern traffic. TYM 470 is related to have been restored by a long term owner who sadly passed on before he could ride the finished article and was bequeathed to his son. It was subsequently offered via Woburn Green Motorcycles on his behalf and came to the current owner just last year. A well finished machine that still carries the supplier's plate from Arnold's Motorcycles, Haverfordwest and has just 2,840 recorded miles since its restoration, local jaunts only have been carried out recently around Cambridge. Due to ill health kick starting 500cc's of Plumstead's finest has become unsustainable hence this very tidy and clean example coming to sale. Offered with magazine articles, old MOT's, old tax discs, and the original owners list of work carried out. Also included are gaskets, an original handbook and a current V5C document.

Reg. No. UVS 405
Frame No. YD1S 35616
Engine No. 35408 YD
One of the rarest of the Bantam brotherhood the Competition model had several unique features. The cylinder head is fitted with a decompression port and the seat is mounted on a separate frame, the rigid frame has a higher clearance than standard and the extra large rear sprocket is riveted to the hub. The slim high mounted mudguards are another standard feature for the Competition D1 and this example dates from the first year of production, definitely in its working clothes and fresh from a jaunt along the local green lane it was running well on inspection and started readily. In the correct green livery this is a most uncommon example which is presented in complete and fine running order with V5C documentation.

Reg. No. 962 RPA
Frame No. RS14864
Engine No. VM4319
With a lengthy racing heritage, the Velocette factory persisted with big singles in the face of twin cylinder opposition and the near 100mph Venom was probably quite a convincing argument for most folk. The accompanying buff logbook shows that dealers Comerfords of Thames Ditton in Surrey took ownership in June 1960 and sold the Venom the following July to the magnificently named Malcolm Redvers Justice of Sutton, Surrey. The current custodian who has been in possession since 1997 informs us that an unleaded conversion has been carried out to the valves and seats and a BTH electronic magneto has been fitted, (the original item is supplied). Other work stated to have taken place include an engine breather mod', paper oil filter, new wheel bearings, spokes and rims, the fitment of a toothed dynamo belt and new fork bushes. The mudguards have been recently re-chromed, the original shock absorbers are supplied. The vendor describes 962 RPA as a tidy example with a recorded 46,268 miles, a current MOT certificate is in place valid until March 2016 and (duty free) road tax is supplied along with current V5C documentation and the original buff logbook.

In the current ownership for 7 years having been coveted for many years and eventually purchased from a work colleague who'd had it since at least 1981, the Cub was purchased in "shed find" condition. The cosmetics have been left entirely as found but an eye to having a working example has led to the fitment of a Mikuni carb', electronic ignition, new wiring, rebuilt wheels and a new exhaust system. At the original purchase the engine fired almost immediately so this has been left well alone. Offered for sale in running and riding order with a quantity of bills and receipts for work carried out, old tax discs and a V5C. Purchasers should note that the frame and engine numbers do not match the V5C, the vendor is confident that this has been the case in all the time he's known the bike.
