JOHN MELVILLE (1902-1986) DANCERS No 2 Signed and dated 1934, inscribed with title verso, oil on canvas 75.5 x 63cm. Exhibited: London, Blond Fine Art Ltd, `A Salute to British Surrealism 1930-1950`, June 1985, no.52 (bt. Mr H. Cullerne Pratt) * Through associations with the Modern Group in Birmingham in the 1920's, Melville came to the attention of the small coterie of British Surrealists in London in the early 1930's. Custodians of art in his native Birmingham were not so welcoming; in 1938, some of his works were excluded from an exhibition on the grounds of being `detrimental to public sensibility`. Despite published essays in the `London Bulletin`, Melville remained an artistically isolated figure in the Midlands. He had greater acclaim abroad where his work was widely exhibited and there was a late revival of interest in his work with exhibitions by Blond Fine Art and others in the 1980's. ++ Good condition; needs a light clean £300-500 |
