AFTER JAMES WARD & G. BONNER (19th Century) JEM WARD'S PICTURE OF THE GREAT FIGHT BETWEEN TOM SAYERS AND J. C. HEENAN Lithograph with some hand colouring, published by F. R. Scofield of Brixton, c.1860 Image 54 x 88.5cm. * This celebrated match took place at Farnborough, Hampshire on April 17th 1860 and was the first heavyweight bout for the world title. The match was contested on the border between Hampshire and Surrey. It was an illegal, bare-knuckle contest so the competitors could evade the county constabularies by edging into the neighbouring county if apprehended. After two hours of vicious fighting and 37 rounds of relentless punches, Sayers had to be saved from strangulation after becoming trapped on the ropes. The fight was declared a draw and a championship belt was awarded to each man. ++ Generally good condition except for severe discoloration of the paper £500-700 M1461.
