HENRY H. PARKER (1858-1930) HAYWAIN ON A LANE Signed, watercolour and pencil 36.5 x 54cm. ++ Scattered foxing and a few blemishes £100-150 M1508. PAUL SANDBY, RA (1730-1809) WINDSOR: VIEW OF THE CASTLE AND TOWN FROM THE PLAYFIELDS AT ETON Pen and ink with watercolour over traces of pencil 30.5 x 48.5cm. ++ A very few slight spots of foxing * These two magnificent views (see also lot 1509) reflect well the comment made by Jane Roberts in `Views of Windsor - Watercolours by Paul and Thomas Sandby` (1995). `Windsor,` she observes, `was for Paul Sandby what Venice was to Canaletto: an assemblage of buildings, some grand, some humble, views of which, produced and reproduced over several decades, had an instant appeal to the art buying public`. He was not the only person to be so smitten with the idyllic setting with the fine architecture rising above the elegant and verdant sweep of the Thames. Daniel Defoe had commented that `the gardens are very fine, and extended from the college down, almost to the bank of the Thames; they are extremely well planted and perfectly kept.` The town of Windsor and its famous college at Eton inspired Sandby to produce some of his most important topographical works. His elder brother, Thomas (b.1723) acted initially as draughtsman to the the Ranger of Windsor Great Park, the Duke of Cumberland, from 1750 and then became the Deputy Ranger himself in 1765. The post occupied Thomas Sandby for the rest of his life and the two brothers spent much time together there, King George III having vouchsafed permission to the artist to roam at will throughout the grounds. Sandby produced 'stained drawings' of the Castle, the Park and the environs for a period of fifty years from c.1750 and his works, many of which now grace the Royal Collection, reflect the changes that occurred throughout the Sandbys' tenure in the town. Paul Sandby returned time and again to the same viewpoint and became obsessive about noting all the numerous minor details that caught his eye. Some of these works were exhibited: eight were shown at the Society of Artists and a further six at the Royal academy during the 1770's (of which both Sandby brothers had been founder members in 1768). In addition, many views of Windsor were reproduced as sepia aquatints from 1777-1782, and these were unusual for being executed by Sandby himself rather than by a commissioned engraver. The similarity between these prints and Sandby's own watercolours made them popular and collectable for private buyers as well as being invaluable learning aids for Sandby's pupils. A variation of `Eton from Crown Corner` was published in 1776 whilst a much closer similarity may be drawn with a 1760 drawing in Lord Fairhaven's former collection at Anglesey Abbey, Cambridgeshire (National Trust). The minute differences only highlight better the accuracy of Jane Roberts' comments about Sandby's obsessive approach to the subject. £10000-15000 M1509.
