SIR JOHN LAVERY, RSA, RA, RHA (1856-1941) LADY ON A GARDEN STEP Signed and dated J LAVERY 80 (the date indistinct), oil on canvas 44.5 x 29cm. * In this early work by Lavery, the artist is still exploring a derivative but commercial theme in a straightforward high Victorian style. It is more old-fashioned in spirit than the European, forward looking subject matter that he was to adopt at the Academie Julian in Paris in 1881. Lavery had just left Glasgow where he had enjoyed a low key debut at the city's Institute of Fine Arts in 1880. He had found a few patrons as a result but, after an unmemorable few months at Heatherley's Art School in London, he was trying hard to find a style that would gain him swift and lucrative commercial approval. He tackled a very similar theme in a small (20 x 15cm) oil, painted in 1881, entitled `Waiting` (Renfrew Museums and Galleries). In that work, an elegant lady is also shown descending almost identical rustic steps. Nonetheless, there are distinct signs of refinement in Lavery's technique in this picture that suggest that Lavery was learning his craft with speed and ability. We are grateful to Professor Kenneth McConkey who has authenticated this work. ++ Lined; retouching of old craquelure £2000-3000

On the 10th of September, Richmond travelled from Sparta to Stafia. After a leisurely amble home on horseback, he was moved to poetical flights of description in his diary, relishing the recollection of the idyllic `quiet harmonic solitude`, the `gentle song of the lullaby` from the scattering leaves, the `blue crystal` of the distant hills and the `gentle murmur` of village streams which `came to the ear like the song of river maidens`. Studies relating to this work are in Sheffield (Graves Art Gallery) and a private collection. £6000-8000
