Exhibited: London, The Leicester Galleries, September 1943, no.32, bt. Wing Cdr and Mrs R. G. Sims * The figures in this work were taken from Dorchester Abbey, Oxfordshire (sometimes known as the `Action Effigy` depicting Sir William de Valance the Younger as the `Sword Drawing Knight`) and the Temple Church in London (the latter two from recumbent effigies, destroyed in the Blitz in 1940) In the Leicester Galleries exhibition, presented during the dark days of World War II, Kennington showed respectful portraits of serving officers and members of the Home Guard. He was seeking to represent afresh the traditional virtues of honour, duty, bravery and chivalry that were so boldly depicted in medieval imagery and works by Sir Hans Holbein. In this richly coloured drawing, he conflates three famous depictions of `knightly virtues` to chime with the spirit of patriotism at the height of the War. ++ Good condition £1500-2000
