1914 Cover and card to S.M.S "Leipzig", the July 31st cover from Berlin posted just before the war, returned handstamped "Zuruck" and "Unbestellbar / Marine-Postbureau", a stampless Feldpost card of S.M.S "Karlsruhe" sent after war was declared with circular "ADMIRALSTAB DER MARINE" cachets, probably forwarded through a German embassy to von Spee's Squadron. (2). £100-120S.M.S "Nurnberg"The "Nurnberg" was at the Caroline Islands when war was declared. On September 7th a landing party from the ship destroyed the cable station on Fanning Island. "Nurnberg" rendezvouzed with von Spee's Squadron at Easter Island in October, participated in the Battle of Coronel and was sunk at the Battle of the Falklands on December 8th 1914. |

1914 (Sep/Oct) Covers from Hamburg to Friedrich Hoffman on the sailing ship "Petschili" at Valparaiso, the first redirected to "On Board S.M.S Nurnberg", the second with violet "An Bord S.M.S "Nuernberg"", the third with violet "An Bord der Deutschen Auslandsflotte", Valparaiso backstamps, also a note from a Hamburg shipping agent about a letter received from Hoffman who had joined the "Nurnberg" in Valparaiso. The second cover with stamps cut out, the others franked 20pf or 30pf, an interesting correspondence. (4). £180-220S.M.S "Cormoran"The original "Cormoran" was a gunboat, recommissioned in 1909 when her masts were reduced from 3 to 2. On August 4th 1914 the Russian steamer "Ryazan" was captured, taken to Tsingtau and renamed "Cormoran", manned by the crew of the original gun boat, the K.D.M.S No. 8 datestamp also transferred. She operated as an independent raider in Australian waters until lack of coal forced her to seek refuge in Guam in December 1914 where the crew were interned on the ship. In 1917, with the entry of the U.S.A into the war, the crew became P.O.Ws and were moved to the U.S mainland. |

In March 1915 with coal running out she entered Newport News harbour where the crew were interned on the ship. In 1917, with the U.S entry into the war, the crew were moved to P.O.W camps on shore. |

She operated as an independent raider capturing 14 ships in seven months, but with engines in need of repair sailed into Newport News harbour where the crew were interned on the ship. In 1917 with the entry of the U.S.A into the war the crew were sent as P.O.Ws to camps, and the ship used as a U.S troopship. |

1914 (June 17) Cover franked 10pf from Germany to the S.M.S "Karlsruhe", c/o Marine Post Bureau Berlin, returned handstamped "Zuruck", reverse with "Unbestellbar / Marine - Postbureau" and endorsed "schiff gesunken" (ship sunk), the cover held at the Marine Post Bureau until November (manuscript "20/11"). Very scarce. £150-180S.M.S "Emden"The "Emden" under Capt. von Muller acted as an independent surface raider with her own collier, the "Markomannia" - 31 ships were captured in the Bay of Bengal and Madras attacked before the "Emden" steamed eastwards, attacking Penang harbour on the night of October 28th sinking a Russian Cruiser and French Destroyer. The "Emden" with a captured collier, the "Buresk", then proceeded to attack the wireless station on Cocos Island but was discovered there and sunk by H.M.A.S "Sydney" on November 9th. Captured crew were taken to Colombo from where all fit men were sent on to Malta and the wounded to New South Wales. The Cocos landing party of 50 men led by Lt. Com. von Mucke escaped on the schooner "Ayesha" to Sumatra, transferring to a German freighter "Choising" sailing to Hodeida in Yemen and then trekking across the desert to Constantinople. A prize crew from the "Emden" on the captured ship "Exford" were interned in Batavia after the recapture of the ship. "Emden" crew also sailed on the "Choising" from Hodeida to East Africa, intending to supply the "Konigsberg" with coal, but had to put into Asmara in neutral Italian Eritrea where they were interned. |
