1911 (Sep 9) Red-brown London to Windsor postcard posted to Hendon with KGV ½d tied by the London Aerial Post c.d.s code 5 at Hendon Aerodrome, the reverse signed by all four pilots who flew the Coronation air mail service, C. Hubert, G.W Hamel, C.H Greswell and E.F Driver. An exceptional card with all pilot signatures, including Charles Hubert who crashed on his first flight from Hendon on Sept. 11th breaking both his legs. Italy. 1911 (Sep 9) Green London to Windsor postcard addressed to Italy with two KGV ½d stamps tied by the London Aerial Post c.d.s, Cernorbio arrival datestamp (Sep 16), the reverse signed by Charles Hubert. Light blue cross through address and minor staining on reverse but a scarce pilot signed card. Hubert crashed and broke both legs when taking off at Hendon on Sept. 11th; as a result very few 1911 cards were signed by him. Photo on Page 28. £200-250

Very rare as only special stationery was supposed to be flown, one of three ordinary postcards recorded that have the Aerial Post datestamp and were flown, bend at right edge. 1911 (Sep 13) Brown London to Windsor envelope to Egham, posted unpaid with London Aerial Post code 2 datestamp and "2d / WDO" charge mark, reverse bearing a "Found Open and Officially Sealed" label tied by Egham c.d.s (Sep. 18). The enclosed letter with message "I dont know whether you will ever get this - through the air. The service doesn't seem to be a great success". The only recorded unpaid and charged Aerial Post envelope, most extraordinary as all official stationery was sold prestamped, vertical central fold, small tear at base and minor edge wear but unique. India. 1911 (Sep 16) Green Windsor to London envelope franked KGV 1d tied by Windsor Aerial Post code 2 c.d.s, addressed to the ship "Rewa" at Southampton Docks and then redirected to Bombay with Southampton c.d.s (Sep. 19) alongside the stamp, backstamped at Cricklewood, London F.S, Sea Post Office Bombay - Aden and at Bombay (Oct 6). The Windsor envelope is the scarcest of all the basic stationery types and is very scarce addressed abroad; the only 1911 item seen by us sent internally then readdressed to an overseas address. 1914 (Mar 25) "Harrogate Herald" newspaper folded up within a wrapper, addressed to "Mrs Henry Deakin, Swan Hydro, Harrogate. Finder of this please post" and endorsed "Thrown from Blackburn aeroplane", a 1d stamp cancelled at Harrogate tying the wrapper to the newspaper, the paper with manuscript inscription "While staying at Harrogate Mrs Leigh (Kitty's aunt) flew over the Hydro & other parts threw out this paper which was picked up & posted to me, Grace Deakin". In 1913 Harold Blackburn flew the Blackburn type D monoplane extensively throughout Yorkshire and in October beat a Lancashire built biplane in the War of the Roses air race. He flew at the Sheffield Aviation Week from March 28 - April 4, 1914, evidently flying at Harrogate just prior to this, and during the July 1914 Yorkshire Agricultural Show at Bradford flew a half hourly service between Leeds and Bradford with some newspapers carried. Some soiling, nevertheless a remarkable and unique item. £200-300

Scotland - Emergency Flights. 1945-50 Covers comprising 1945 (Jan. 19) cover from Aberdeen to Gardenstown dropped by the R.A.F after Gardenstown was cut off by snow for ten days (cover signed by Banff Postmaster and inscribed by recipient, with letters from the Banff Postmaster and R.A.F Station at Banff describing the events); 1947 covers to North Ronaldsay (4, two window envelopes) cut off by gales since Dec. 28th all inscribed "Carried by emergency air mail, W. Scott Sub. 1840 (Sep 12) Cover to London bearing a 1d black (JL plate 1a, three margins, cut into at base) tied by a red Maltese Cross, almost certainly of Jersey, red oval "PAID SHIP LETTER / LONDON" datestamp alongside, reverse with "SOUTHAMPTON / SHIP-LETTER" and a London arrival datestamp, seal cut out from reverse. Rockoff and Jackson record and illustrate two similar 1d black covers with Jersey Maltese Crosses both with the same Southampton and London Ship Letter handstamps (Encyclopaedia of The Maltese Cross, vol. 1, page 131), very scarce.
