1857 (June 4) Cover from Hitchin to Cape Town franked 6d, carried on the Lindsay Line steamer "Tynemouth" from Dartmouth to Table Bay, the first sea mail to arrive upon which the Cape sea letter rate of 4d was not levied, the cover therefore handstamped "PREPAID" to remind the counter clerks of this fact. Very scarce, the Prepaid handstamp apparently only used on mail from this one sailing sent just after the introduction of the 6d rate, a red "1" showing the Cape share of the postage. 1877 (June 22) Six page letter written and signed by Col. C.E Gordon, Governor-General of the Soudan and Equatorial Provinces, to Col. Graham V.C. Written from Oomchanga, Darfur, the letter includes "These brutes of Arabs have raised all Darfur in revolt and then howled for help. I sent on what troops I could and am now waiting for more to go on to the capital Taschir." Gordon contemplates asking Watson to be Governor of Darfur, he is needed in Abyssinia, and has had to dismiss his second in command and over 20 high ranking officials. Gordon conquered and pacified Darfur in 1877. A good letter, no cover. £500-600

1884 (Feb 18) Egypt 20pa postcard written by General Gordon on the day he entered Khartoum, addressed to Rev. Horace Waller in England, "KHARTOUM" c.d.s (Feb 19) applied below the stamp which was cancelled in transit at Alexandria (Mar. 11), Assiout transit c.d.s (Mar. 8). The message includes "we are just entering Khartoum having left London on 18th Jany. ...... Hicks had 10,000 men who marched out, not one has escaped. All their bones whiten the plain near Obeid. He appears to have been betrayed by a trick to go through their woody country, it is terrible to think of him winding his way into the Lions den, with all his movements known to his enemy, who when he chose, shut his mouth on him". An exceptional card to Waller, who had travelled in Central Africa and campaigned against slavery; Gordon describes the massacre of the 10,000 Egyptian forces under General Hicks at El Obeid.
