Air Mails & Overland Mail

1268
1919 (May 12) Registered cover signed by Lt. Pringle to his wife in England, inscribed "Via Aerial Mail" on both sides, the reverse bearing three ½a stamps cancelled "F.P.O 85" datestamps at Baghdad with A.P.O S.Z10 c.d.s of Cairo (May 22) and a London arrival datestamp (June 2), red double ring "CIVIL POSTS / AERIAL / IRAQ" on the front. Flown from Baghdad to Cairo by two R.A.F DH9 aircraft of 142 Squadron piloted by Lt. Milnes and Lt. Mechan who were returning to their Squadron at Suez, having flown to Baghdad with Lt. Col Wilson (who was returning from the Paris Peace Conference). The cover unfortunately roughly torn open with upper piece torn away (up to 23mm lost at upper right, reducing to 5mm at upper left, not enough for any stamps to have been removed, the join nearly split and strengthened internally with tissue paper). A rare flight cover despite the faults; just eight other covers from this flight recorded by Laurence Kimpton in "Air Mails Across the Middle East" (six of which are stampless, none are registered). This "Aerial" cachet was used on mails carried on one further flight in 1920, by Capt. Mathews and Sgt. Kay from Baghdad to Karachi (six covers recorded), only about 15 examples of this cachet therefore recorded in total, this the only example on a registered cover. Photo on Page 156. £600-800
