WW2 Distinguished Flying Medal, 1939-1945, France and Germany Stars, Defence Medal, BWM and QEII Imperial Service Medal to 1303779 F/Sgt (later Flt Lieut) A.W. Smith R.A.F. (Arthur William Smith D.F.M. on ISM, WW2 un-named as issued) nearly extremely fine and better, mounted in large glass frame with Buckingham Palace transmittal slip, VR rank epaulettes and 2 badges. The award of the DFM was announced in the London Gazette dated 25th September 1945 with 153 Sqn flying Lancasters, "This navigator has now completed 29 sorties successfully against targets in Germany and occupied territory including attacks on such heavily defended targets as Essen, Leuna, Stuttgart, Cologne and Nuremberg. Flight Sergeant Smith has displayed coolness in the face of danger and shows a high degree of skill as a Navigator. Flight Sergeant Smith's co-operation, coolness and devotion to duty have contributed in a large measure to the success of his crew. He has proved himself to be an outstanding member of a gallant crew. Flight Sergeant Smith's record fully justifies the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal.<\t><\n>"The ISM was announced in the London Gazette dated 26th August 1980 as Overseer Birmingham GPO. He was born 15/6/20, enlisted 15/7/40, commissioned 30/3/45. In 1947 he was one of four officers mentioned for helping to save the lives of a number of officers when BCAIR Station Officer's Mess, Iwakuni, Japan caught fire and burnt at night down with the death of 2 officers. The 4 officers raised the alarm, conducted fire-fighting duties and then ran through the building waking people up and getting them out of the burning building. With good quantity of original paperwork including Log Book (replacement as original lost in Iwakuni fire), newspaper cuttings, 29 original mission navigation observation sheets and maps of route flown as completed by recipient during flights (these are rare to find with medal groups) including raids to Wanna Eickel, Karlsruhe, Ludwigshaven, Ulm, Dresden, Chemnitz etc. Also with Airman's Pay Book, Officer's Medical Record Card, Air Navigation Book, range of UK flying maps, various trade and exercise books, copied paper print photos etc. Glass will not be posted. WW2 Distinguished Flying Medal, 1939-1945, Air Crew Europe (France and Germany bar) Stars, Defence Medal and BWM to 1825568 F/Sgt T. Millin R.A.F. (WW2 un-named as issued) good very fine and better). Thomas Millin's DFM was announced in the London Gazette dated 17th July 1945 as an Air Gunner with No 578 Sqn. With copied citation: "Flight Sergeant Millen has completed a tour of operations with this squadron consisting of 41 sorties totalling 191.55 hours. Twenty of them were attacks on German targets and were against such heavily defended areas as Chemnitz, Hamburg, Duisburg, Kiel, Essen. His alertness and cool judgement inspired the complete confidence of his crew of which he was an outstanding member. Flight Sergeant Millen's outstanding ability and strong sense of duty have made him an example to all who knew him and his courage and complete disregard of his own personal safety have been of a very high order.
