WWI Essex Regt and RFC brothers' casualty groups with 1. 1914-15 Star trio and Memorial Plaque to Capt A.W. New (2 Lieut Essex R. on Star, Athelstan William New on Plaque) about mint, plaque with card case of issue and 3 medal boxes of issue. He died of wounds on 15th May 1918 serving with 4th Bn having being accidently shot on 14th May and is buried in Bagneux British Cemetery. He was commissioned in 4th Bn Essex 17/11/13, landed Egypt 10/8/15, served in Gallipoli with 1/4th Bn, admitted to base hospital with chronic diarrhoea 26/1/16, evacuated to UK 8/3/16, was promoted Capt 20/7/17.<\t><\n>2. BWM, Victory Medal, Memorial Plaque and Memorial Scroll to Lieut H.B. New (Hedley Bruce New on plaque and Lieut Hedley Bruce New Essex Regiment & Royal Flying Corps on scroll) nearly mint plaque with card case of issue, scroll tube of posting and 2 medal boxes of issue. He was killed in action flying a Sopwith Camel B2425 with No 3 Sqn RFC on 31st October 1917 and with no know grave is commemorated on the Arras Flying Services Memorial. He was commissioned in 4th Bn Essex Regt 18/10/14, promoted Lieut 1/6/16, seconded to RFC 26/6/17.
Lot includes massive range of supporting personal and extended family effects including school reports from Whitgift Grammar School, hotel bills, 2 photo albums by Athelstan of middle east and Gallipoli, condolence transmittal slips, wide range of loose military and family photos and postcards including some aircraft, letters from the front with censor marks, legal and financial documents, sporting fixtures, family tree etc. Also copied MICs, CWGC, Soldiers Died, Officer's Papers, war diary etc, from Shenfield Essex. Kanes Manch R. (initial G on Star, Ernest Kanes on plaque), polished, nearly very fine and better. Arthur Kanes was killed in action with 2nd Bn on 26th August 1914 and is buried in Le Cateau Communal Cemetery. Ernest Kanes was killed in action with 1st Bn on 8th March 1916 and with no known grave is commemorated on the Basra Memorial. With copied CWGC, Soldiers Died, MIC, Roll, 1901 Census. (R) £550

Edward Ernest Hobday was born 8/10/77, joined Merchant Navy 30/7/98, served in Boer War with 75th Coy, 18th Bn Imp Yeo and issued QSA with 4 clasps (this missing), returned to MN 26/9/02, shipwrecked on Swainsby when in collision with Hillbrook near Cardiff. Enlisted in DLI 18/8/14, landed France 5/12/14, wounded on Somme 16/8/16, discharged due to severe wound right hip 25/8/16, returned to MN as Chief Steward 25/4/17. Sold with shrapnel ball removed from right hip, 1914 Xmas tin and card, photo in IY uniform, ribbon bars, Army discharge certificate (2), Pensions letter, Board of Trade Continuous Certificate of Discharge, MN Shipping Register of ships served on dated 1907, copied SWB roll, MIC, QSA rolls etc<\t><\n>WW2 1939-1945, Atlantic Stars, BWM and Memorial Scroll to Stoker 1st Class J.E. Hobday Royal Navy about mint. KX.100100 John Edward Hobday died while serving with HMS Valorous on 23rd August 1941 and is buried in City of London Cemetery, Manor Park. With Navy box of issue addressed to Mrs C. Hobday, Forest Gate and transmission slip named to John Edward Hobday, Buckingham Palace condolence letter and envelops to Mrs C.H. Hobday, 1 dog tag, photo in uniform, 3 photos of destroyer HMS Valorous, 6 photos of collier steamer Heworth damaged and on fire which Valorous came to their rescue, Board of Trade Continuous Certificate of Discharge, Argentine ID Certificate for Merchant Navy, postcards of ships and RN cloth parchment certificate. He was born 24/5/19, joined Merchant Navy as Steward's Boy 30/4/36, volunteered RN 6/10/39, joined Valorous 21/5/40, escorting Convoy FN223 when Heworth was bombed and set on fire and Valorous rescued survivors. With copied MIC and Tank Corps attestation book, Thomas Mayo was born in Walsall, enlisted 3/10/14 aged 15, served BEF 29/6/18 to 31/1/19, discharged 8/5/39. (R) £70

Click to view full image... 1914 Star trio with copy slider bar to Lieut T. Hickman (1533 Pte T. Hickman H.A.C. on Star) extremely fine with HAC & Leinster restrike cap badges. Terence Hickman was killed in action with 7th Bn Leinster Regiment during a trench raid near Hulluch Crater on 26th June 1916 and with no known grave is commemorated on the Menin Gate. With good quantity of copied research including officer's papers, he was born in London, lived in Kensington, educated at Merchant Taylor's School, worked as an Articled Clerk for solicitors Deacon, Gibson & Co, a noted climber, he was a member of the Climber's Club, enlisted in HAC 25/8/14, served in France 18/9/14 to 10/2/15 and was commissioned in Leinster Regt 11/2/15, was wounded in the leg when he accidently shot himself 15/7/15. He returned to France 28/3/16 and was attached to the 7th Bn as the Bombing Officer. It was on the night 26/27 June that he was killed in an attack to consolidate the position near a blown mine crater at Hulluch, near Loos. It is unclear why CWGC have commemorated him at Ypres and not Loos. (See photo) (R) £800
