  A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, With Double Paper Leaf, découpage for the top border and between panels painted in pastels and depicting various figures, those in the central cartouche being a wealthy couple in good 18th century costume, in front of a church, the man pointing, or perhaps proposing marriage? The verso is simply painted with a rural scene, in green. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. Together with A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, with découpé leaf, the paper of ivory, unadorned, but with intricate patterns for the top border and each fold, showing figures on horseback and crowns. The upper sections of the guards are carved with a figure and the gorge sticks have simple piercing. The head is shaped and flattened at the very base. Guard length 11.25 inches or 285cm (2)

2001
  A Late 18th or Early 19th Century Bone Fan, classically carved and pierced. The double leaf, of pink glazed paper, is decorated quite simply and elegantly with fringed swags to the top from which hang garlands of flowers, painted in soft green and yellow and some blue, and embellished with gold sequins. The recto is plain pink. Guard length 10 inches or 25.5cm

The double paper leaf is painted with a border which resembles a fabric design, in a bright blue with sloping white stripes and bunches of roses at regular intervals. The roses continue into the central panel which features a young couple dressed in fine 18th century costume, making flower garlands. The scene is surrounded by an unusual background of a shimmering gold, created by the application of glitter or crushed and ground mother-of-pearl, this area being further decorated with flower sprays.   A French Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the double leaf plain to the verso, mounted on carved, pierced and gilded sticks, the upper guards backed with pale pink mother-of-pearl, the recto shows a courting couple in 18th century dress, seated outdoors to play a card game, accompanied by a chaperone. The cartouche is bordered with gold sequins which further meander across the leaf, accompanied by further detail in metal thread and flowers, formed from coloured sequins. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27cm. Together with An 18th Century Ivory Fan, with similar monture, the double fabric leaf plain to the verso, the recto painted vertically in gold and colour, showing flaming torches, flowers and musical instruments, alternating with embroidery to the folds and simple sequin decoration.   Boating in the Park: An 18th Century Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture gilded and silvered, the double leaf showing a lady walking over a precariously narrow plank as she leaves a small boat, helped by an attentive beau, a dog barking at the arrival, another couple accompanying them as they join others on the lake or picnicking on the grass. The reserves are well painted with roses and wild flowers, and gold highlights to the border. The verso features flowers and gold scrolling, and at each corner a vignette shows two cherubs at play. Together with a shaped hinged fan box covered in raspberry woven silk and lined with olive green silk and edged with braid.

  A Third Quarter 18th Century French Ivory Fan, the monture relatively plain save for carving to the upper guards, backed with cerise foil and gilded, and gilding applied to the shoulders/upper gorge. The double fabric leaf is plain to the verso, the recto being embroidered with metal thread and tiny gold sequins to highlight three features, those of a central vase of colourful flowers, and further flower sprays. Elsewhere on the leaf bright flowers alternate with groupings of musical instruments. A gilt and red painted border encompasses the designs. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm

  A Late 18th Century French Ivory Fan, the monture carved and pierced, some designs in pairs in the gorge. The silk leaf is painted with two extravagantly dressed ladies seated discreetly outdoors, lest the secrets they are confiding be overheard, one holding a fan, both rather flushed, not noticing Cupid with his arrows hovering silently beside them. One further colourful painted vignette shows a parrot and musical instruments. Three panels en grisaille show rural scenes and cherubs playing. All features are bordered with embroidered gold sequins and the reserves are filled with garlands of flowers. The verso is simply painted with three sprays of delicate flowers.   An 18th Century Carved and Pierced Ivory Fan, in the chinoiserie style, the guards quite delicately carved, the painted vellum leaf mounted à l'Anglaise with various depictions of daily life. In the centre, a lady holds a fixed fan before a seated gentleman, his servant shading him with a large branch of foliage, to whose right a woman carries a water pitcher, whereas to the left a solitary figure is seated in contemplation. The verso shows another landscape with distant mountains, a figure to the foreground holding a fixed fan. Guard length 9.75 inches or 24.5cm

  A Mid-18th Century Découpé Fan, the guards of ivory, the upper sections very wide, and carved with a meandering form. The gorge sticks are plain, of simple wood. The double paper leaf is painted in pastel colours from the left with a man in oriental dress being approached by a dog; a large butterfly, and a bird hanging from a blossoming branch, these flowers being repeated on the verso. Most leaf folds are découpé with a geometric design. Guard length11 inches or 28cm

A Mid 18th Century Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture carved, pierced and gilded, with thin mother-of-pearl backing to the gorge, where gilded figures in 18th century costume are assembled. The vellum leaf is mounted à l'Anglaise, the recto showing a pair of lovers before the altar of love, receiving laurel leaves from Hera in her chariot drawn by colourful peacocks with magnificent outspread tails. To the right, seated by the obelisk, sits Diana with her weapons, holding a cornucopia brought by the generously proportioned figure of Abundance who has joined the scene. Fame with her wings and trumpet is perhaps also present. The verso is painted simply with a boy playing with his dog along a tree-lined avenue. The reserves recto/verso are painted delicately with flowers highlighted with gold. Guard length 11.25 inches or 28.5cm

  A Mid-18th Century Fan, the ivory monture pierced and carved, the upper guards with a Chinoiserie figure and the gorge with an oval containing a similar figure. The double paper leaf, bound to the top with a gold border, is découpé in vertical panels of different designs which alternate with small scale paintings of flowers and berries, to include carnations and convolvulus and heartsease, all flowers being used for the embroideries of the day.   A Third Quarter 18th Century Ivory Fan, the sticks pierced and the upper guards carved with flowers, this section painted in soft blue, pink and green and backed with cerise foil. The lower gorge sticks are painted with delicate pink flowers, almost certainly at a later date. The double paper leaf has several panels. The largest showing a shepherdess accompanied by a lady holding a fan, a small boy playing a pipe to the right. Elsewhere, two vignettes are painted with cherubs holding flaming torches aloft whilst seated on clouds, and to the far sides of the leaf are courting couples. The verso has the air of an earlier fan, with exquisitely detailed flower posies, painted with auriculas, parrot tulips, roses, Turk's cap lilies, peonies and foliage, insects and butterflies arriving for the pollen. Contained in a silk fan sleeve woven with flowers and embroidered with sequins, with drawstring. Guard length 11.5 inches or 29cm (2)

  A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, French, the monture carved, pierced, silvered and gilded, with medallions containing birds and figures, the gorge sticks in pairs. The silk leaf has a central fête champêtre, with two further vignettes painted with figures, and several columns built from further medallions and containing birds, vases and flowers. All these features plus a central design of leaves are bordered with tambour stitch in metallic thread and embellished with tiny sequins. The verso is painted with three simple landscapes and further medallions. Guard length 10.25 inches or 26cm

A Circa 1760's Ivory Fan, the monture pierced, gilded and attractively painted, the gorge with bright turquoise, softer green and touches of other colours, serving to draw the eye to the carved cherubs and bowls of fruit in the centre. The gorge is further decorated with tiny iridescent shapes and parts are backed with thin mother-of-pearl. The head is well shaped, seen when open. The double paper leaf is painted with a rather imaginative garden, formed with arbours and statues. A makeshift tent provides shade whilst several activities are undertaken. A lady with a parasol holds a doll puppet; a lady wearing a laced stomacher is fanned by the gentleman who admires her; another gentleman attempts to purchase flowers from a maid who appears to have obtained his tricorn hat, in front of a shell fountain and a dolphin statue. And to the left, a servant prepares to bring liquid refreshment on a tray. The verso, the reserves painted with exotic flowers, shows two country boys playing bowls. Guard length10.5 inches or 26.5cm

  A Mid-18th Century French Ivory Fan, mounted with a double leaf painted in differing shades of pink en camaieu, bordered in pink, and depicting figures in a pastoral setting, the verso painted in a similar fashion with figures in a simple landscape. The monture, carved and pierced, is painted with flowers and birds in complementary colours, the upper guard continuing the painted flower motif and carved with a boy playing a flute. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture carved, pierced and silvered, the gorge sticks in alternating pairs, the guards incorporating metal thread embroidery and imitation seed pearls. The most unusual leaf, of paper, muslin and stiffened net (previously considered to be cat gut), features three painted vignettes applied to a net background, depicting figures in pastoral settings. The reserves are applied with muslin and embroidered with "fillings" that closely resemble lace. The verso is plain. Guard length 10.25 inches or 26cm

  A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture elaborately carved and gilded, the gorge particularly to note, with medallions containing gilded profiles and others with cherubs, and the Sun King, other sticks designed as columns, and the addition of silvered, almost minute sequin shapes which glint in the light. The double vellum (?) leaf is tinged with pale pink, the central cartouche showing travellers at an Inn, Food and drink being served, and two side vignettes continue the travelling theme with a depiction of an encampment and a port with boats and provisions. The reserves are filled with swags of roses and gold stripes. The verso shows a rural scene by a river with a couple taking their rest, a fisherman and a church.   A Late 18th Century French Peephole Fan, the ivory monture carved and gilded with figures, with the addition of minute coloured sequins to the gorge. The double silk leaf, with cut outs filled with net to provide peepholes, shows the Sacrifice to Hymen, the gentrified figures on recto/ verso elaborately dressed, the reserves painted with vases of flowers, and musical instruments and embellished with metal threads and colourful sequins.   A Large Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture most probably circa 1770's, the leaf, in the Chinese style, a later addition. The monture, carved, pierced and gilded, features figures and animals amidst scrolling leaves. The double paper leaf shows figures on horseback, forming a procession, accompanied by musicians, and features a building and a bridge. The reserves are filled with bright and colourful flowers and foliage, and the verso features stylised flowers, a bird and two butterflies. Guard length 12 inches or 30.5cm

  La Coeur Enflamée: An ivory Fan, circa 1780, probably French, the monture carved, pierced and gilded with cherubs, figures and urns. The paper leaf is painted with a young couple being rowed in a boat on a river by Pierrot, the flag of the boat being inscribed with the legend "La Coeur enflamé". The painting is bordered in pale blue, and gilded, with further floral decoration. The verso depicts a simple rural landscape. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm

The fan is applied with foil flowers, birds, and lion masks. Two dancing figures feature one either side of central gilt profile portraits of George II and Queen Caroline, surmounted by a crown. Guard length 8.5 inches or 26.5cm
Purchased at Christie's SK on 1st May 1980 for £189.00. Exhibited in the Royal Fans exhibition Catalogue No 6.
This fan is accompanied by a handwritten letter c 1800 which states "This fan was given by Miss Flora Macdonald Prince Charlie's Mistress to my wife's grandmother (whose second husband was Thomas Walley Esq of Manchester) in gratitude for the kind entertainment they afforded the prince and her while in Manchester. Signed by James Pring. Thomas Walley was one of the two Constables in Manchester in 1745, who may have met Bonnie Prince Charlie when he came to Manchester. He kept a diary which was reprinted in The Transactions of the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society Vol VII 1889, pp142-159 entitled Manchester and the rebellion of 1745 by J.P.Earwalker. A further article was published in 1961. The vendor has supplied copies. It is however unlikely that the Prince would have given Mrs Walley a fan bearing the heads of King George II and Queen Caroline. George II 1727-1760. £300 - 600

  A Late 18th Century Blond Tortoiseshell Fan, the monture carved, pierced and gilded, the gorge in particular with figures the double paper leaf seemingly glazed on the verso. The recto, in chinoiserie style, is painted with several figures wearing simple robes, some appearing to bring refreshments. A lively dog accompanies the figure to the right, approaching a table which is decorated with blue and white panels and is placed next to an enormous lidded urn, with gold detail and a pink painted pagoda and foliage painted on otherwise blue and white porcelain. The double leaf is printed with seven coloured ovals containing scenes relating to life in the times of William Shakespeare, by Sarah Ashton, 28 Little Britain, 1796. From the left, "The
Infant….", followed by The Schoolboy going unwillingly to school, The Lover, The Soldier, The Judge, The Man ravaged by Age and finally the Second Childhood. Marked at the bottom right "Entered in Stationer's Hall". Guard length 9.75 inches or 24cm

  A Neo-Classical Fan, circa 1790, the gorge of ivory, the guards worked in a gold metal, the upper sections incised and set with paste in regular lines, the gorge sticks carved and pierced. The double stipple engraved silk leaf is extensively embroidered with tiny gold sequins, bordering a central cartouche showing classical maidens, Cupid with his bow, and other winged cherubs, probably a depiction of the toilet of Venus, and two side vignettes painted with ladies next to trees with winged cherubs in the shadows. Elsewhere there are four blue ovals in Wedgwood style, and sequins fill any reserves. Guard length 9.75 inches or 25cm
Purchased at Christie's SK on the 13th May 1980 for £150.00. According to the Christie's catalogue, the fan was believed to have belonged to Queen Caroline. The Queen, wife of George II, died in 1837. Queen Caroline, (b 1768), wife of the Prince Regent, was Princess of Wales from 1795 to 1820 and nominally Queen 1820-21, George IV having refused to have her crowned. £400 - 800

  A Fine Mid-18th Century Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture heavily gilded, the carved gorge backed with thin mother-of-pearl. The leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, shows Cupid with other winged cherubs alongside Hera and her peacock, Athena with her weapons of shield and spear, and Aphrodite, two white doves in flight behind them. The verso shows a solitary lady holding a posy of flowers. Together with a shaped fan box covered in green leather with detail on the lid and side catches. Guard length 11.25 inches or 28.5cm (2)

  A 1760's Ivory Fan of Cabriolet Form, the monture carved and pierced, painted and gilded, with a design of birds, flowers, fruit and figures. The upper leaf section is painted with a large cartouche of a farmer picking fruit and presenting his harvest to two seated ladies, with a young boy playing with a dog in the foreground. The reserves feature various smaller vignettes of landscapes and a seascape. The lower leaf features a shepherd and shepherdess in a rural setting. The verso is plain. Guard length 10.5 inches 26.5cm

  Russia, Prussia and Germany, Three Monarchs: An 18th Century French Printed and Hand-Coloured Fan, relating to the death of Frederick the Great in 1786, the paper leaf mounted on bone and showing three Monarchs, Frederic II King of Prussia, Joseph II Emperor of German, King of the Romains, and Catherine Alesiewna Empress of Russia, the reserves further embellished with wealthy mourners around the tomb, the latter bearing the motto "Il sut vaincre a la fois et chanter ses victoires" and symbols such as the scales of justice. Queen Anne's Fan: A Mid to Late 18th Century Fan, with shaped wooden sticks painted with exotic figures, birds, vases and pavilions, the head fairly bulbous, the gorge sticks with smaller figures in detailed costume. The double paper leaf is painted with a chinoiserie scene of maidens in a garden. Unusually, the leaf is shaped at the top border, and tipped with peacock feathers which alternate with pointed, gilded motifs and painted faces or birds. The verso is vibrantly painted with flowers and insects, possibly a wasp, Iris, a butterfly, reeds and rocks. Together with a period paper covered card fan tube in mottled green marked inside "Queen Anne's fan". Guard length 11 inches or 28cm (2)
Purchased at Sotheby's on May 1st 1980, for £99.00, when the fan was dated to 1770.
This fan has caused much discussion in the past. It could well be from the Queen Anne period. Although it would be almost impossible to prove that it belonged to Queen Anne herself, it must be stated that the fan is of high quality, and quite exotic by design. Queen Anne reigned from 1702 to 1714. £700 - 1000

A Late 18th Century Grand Tour Fan Leaf, framed and glazed, with a depiction of the Bay of Naples by night with a fiery Vesuvius in the background, the port lighthouse in the foreground. The vignette to the right shows a slightly different view by day. To the left of the leaf a musical score with words, and a further script with a poem or a song, are placed in front of a pink trompe l'oeil ribbon which emerges to frame the daytime vignette and a further script to the right. The reserves are a pale light green. The song is by Carlo Innocenzo Frugoni, an Italian poet and librettist. The poem is by Pietro Metastasio. The bottom straight edge of the glazed case measures 24.5 inches or 62.5cm £700 - 1000

The vellum leaf, with a cream background and borders of pastel pink and turquoise, has a central oval cartouche depicting The Ponte Milvio in Rome with St. Peter's in the background.   Two Cockade Fans, one dated 1891, the eleven inner sticks of plain wood, save for some handwriting alongside the date showing the fan to be a gift, the fan folding down to a compact 4.5 inches or 11.5cm and 10.25 inches or 26cm when open. The guards are of polished wood and the tips of all sticks form the tops of hearts. Together with a child's cockade fan, probably from the 1920's, in celluloid, the tips of the fifteen inner sticks and two guards again formed as the top of hearts, the inner sticks daintily painted in swags with pink roses and green foliage.   A Pair of 19th Century Rectangular Face Screen or Fixed Fans, of lacquered wood, one painted with Spring flowers, including primulas, snowdrops and crocus, the second with soft roses, auriculas and convolvulus, both bordered with intricate flowers and leaves (as detailed as needle lace with fillings), the turned wooden handles painted in a subtle gold. The versos are printed, one with a river running through a small medieval town, probably French, the stone buildings with tall chimneys, and the other in contrast depicting an oriental river bank, with stylised building and exotic vegetation, a child in conversation with two aged fishermen.   A Small Art Nouveau Folding Fan, with hallmarked silver guards, repoussé with period designs, with faux tortoiseshell sticks. Fitted with a tiny ring from which to hang a ribbon or fix to a belt. On sliding a catch in the metal, a half cockade fan with faux tortoiseshell sticks is revealed, the metal frame then becoming the handle. When closed 12cm. Together with A Boxed "Mechanical" Fan, with three tortoiseshell blades, fitted to a circular tortoiseshell base, gilded, with side mechanism. Contained in the original box, "La Brise, breveté en France et à l'Etranger PARIS". Printed inside the lid, are 3 ovals with sketches of a lady demonstrating the use of the fan (2) £100 - 200

  An Early 20th Century Fan, the silk leaf mounted on celluloid, featuring a lady in 18th century dress reaching out to white doves, the scene bordered with a blue ribbon border, pink roses and tiny coloured sequins. The reserves are painted with scrolling and music instruments. The monture is lightly painted in subtle shades of gold, and lightly carved. Contained in a cream card fan box covered in cream silk, the outside lid printed with an armorial with two supporters and a motto underneath. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm

  A Horn Cockade Fan, circa 1810, the pierced and fretted sticks decorated with two concentric bands of painted decoration, showing pink roses and foliage. The barrel-shaped head of the fan is unusual, being pierced and fretted with a radiating scroll design. The rivet is formed of a steel sequin. In Wonderland: A Wood Brisé Fan, circa 1880's, the light polished sticks drawn with the title "In Wonderland", and illustrated with six Tenniel characters from Alice in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll, with text beneath. From the left, the Hare in costume, with trumpet and scroll, "The Queen of Hearts, she made some tarts, all on a summer day: The Knave of hearts he stole those tarts, and took them quite away!", the Mad Hatter with the dormouse "Twinkle twinkle little bat?, How I wonder what you're at, Up above the world you fly, Like a tea tray in the sky". The two central drawings show "The March Hare and the Mad Hatter trying to put the Dormouse in the teapot", and below "The hatter left the Court without even waiting to put his shoes on". To the right, the Hatter "The wretched toe bled so that he shook both his shoes off" and finally the Hare consults his pocket watch, no verse. The recto shows a spray of roses with a ladybird perched on the stem. Guard length 9.25 inches or 23.5cm
