A Large and Unusual Chinese Export Black Lacquer Fan, circa 1860 to 1870's, Qing Dynasty, the sticks shaped and gilded with roundels, figures and flowers, and continuing up the leaf across alternate folds, à la Sultane. The gorge painting recto/verso features a gathering in a garden. The guards and shoulders of the fan are painted with coin (qian) or charm roundels with Chinese characters. Nine of these charms on a cord are auspicious, symbolising uninterrupted happiness, and there are eighteen here. The characters are usually inscriptions designed to bring good luck or fortune, or to ward off misfortune. The paper leaf visible between the sticks is painted vertically with flowers, birds and butterflies. The verso is brightly painted with flowers, birds and blossom. Guard length 14.75 inches or 27.5cm
Purchased in 1978 in the Chelsea Antiques market, London.
