  Programme of Mr Albert Smith's Ascent of Mont Blanc Aug 12th and 13th 1851: A Paper Fan, mounted on plain wooden sticks, both sides of the double paper leaf printed with drawings and facts and figures relating to the route to the mountain summit. Further drawings show native species of hoofed climbing animal, and local birds. Several vignettes depict glaciers and passes. The printer's attribution is hard to read possibly Lith Brieude Laguerre, rue des Fontaines, Paris. A further print under a central vignette reads "Leroux et Cie Fans's manufact, 41 rue Notre Dame de Nazareth, Paris." Guard length 9.5 or 24cm £400 - 700

  An Early 19th Century Ivory Fan, circa 1810 to 1820's, the sticks carved and silvered, with detailed and inlaid decoration of shaped metal roundels, the gorge particularly ornate. Barrel head. The double silk leaf is painted with a colourful scene of four ladies wearing flowing high waisted robes and gladiator sandals, seated outdoors, one being chased by an Asp. The reserves feature side sprays of painted roses, and 4 small blue ovals in Wedgewood plaque style, verso plain cream. The borders are embellished with scrolling in tiny gold and silver sequins. Contained in the bottom half of a card fan box lined in pink silk. Guard length 9.25 inches or 23.5cm (2)

Regency Romance: A Fine Fan, circa 1830's, the monture of white mother-of-pearl, the gorge elegantly gilded with flowers, both guards of a gold metal repoussé with flowers, the upper guards with the addition of red stones. The double paper leaf is printed and hand coloured, the recto with Moorish buildings and a garden in which three ladies light flames in the hope of finding true love. One carries a fan. Side vignettes show a winged maiden and youth, scattering flower petals and holding floral garlands. The reserves are filled with colourful butterflies and further flowers. The verso depicts a winged maiden holding a flaming torch, an admirer proffering a red rose, with the words "Una visita de amor en casa de su hermano". Print registration FC N382 marked to one side. Together with a fan tube covered in shiny gold paper. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm
FC could refer to F. Coustellier Abaniqueros in Paris. Thanks to The Fan Museum, Greenwich, London, for information relating to print registrations, found in their latest exhibition catalogue "The Romantic Age", which presents a selection of fans from this period.   A Mid-19th Century Bone Fan, the monture carved, pierced and gilded, in an extravagant fashion, the vellum leaf mounted à l'Anglaise, showing an 18th century pastiche of elegant ladies and gentlemen enjoying a social gathering in a park, some clearly rather worse for wear having partaken of the refreshments being offered by the page in the foreground. Signed C. Vara. The verso benefits from simple gold scrolling, and the rivet boasts a turquoise pin. Contained in a cream card fan box covered in cream silk, the inside lid with the label for J Duvelleroy London. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm

  A Bone Handled Parasol Fan, mounted with dark green silk, the handle carved and ending in a shaped loop, the leaf, a cockade, has a mirror in the inside centre, showing as a silk thread covered button to the exterior. By sliding a lever the fixed fan changes to lean over as a mini-parasol to shade the owner from the sun. Length 12 inches or 30.5cm. Together with A Small Bone Folding Fan, mounted with pink silk, the carved and pierced sticks continuing over the front of the leaf à la Sultane. Guard length 7.75 inches or 20cm

  A Wedding Fan, Regency Period, the monture of pierced and gilded ivory sticks, the double leaf with a charming depiction of a bride on her wedding night with Cupid pushing her towards her husband.   Two Mid-19th Century Bone Fans, the first with broad sticks allowing for a colourful painting in the gorge depicting a courting couple by a riverbank, the gentleman down on one knee and holding his lady's hand. The double paper leaf, lithographed and hand coloured, shows a similar scene with winged cherubs carrying flowers destined for the centre of the gentleman's attention, who is unaware of Cupid on a cloud behind her. The verso repeats the romantic theme, this time with country couples sharing a picnic. Contained in a pink velvet fan box with a Duvelleroy label within the lid. Guard length 9.25 inches or 23.5cm. Together with A Bone Fan, with deeper gorge, the recto, lithographed, showing couples and ladies outdoors, amongst wild Spring flowers, a stone well, a windmill and stone buildings in the background.   A Mid-19th Century Fan, the heavy monture of pierced and gilded white mother-of-pearl, mounted with a double paper leaf, lithographed and hand coloured. The central scene depicts a gathering of elegant company, the men in tricorn hats and the ladies in their finery, a flower girl distributing roses. To each side, an extravagant floral basket, love tokens ribbons and bows. A print registration CFTF21114 DE?VAZ is present. The verso is vibrant, in candy pink and shiny embossed gold, the reserves filled with four elaborate urns, birds, torches, and quivers, the central cartouche showing a young girl eavesdropping on lovers. The double leaf is engraved/painted with three classical ladies playing with winged cherubs, the cartouche border embroidered with gold sequins and complemented by two side features of gold sequins. The borders are further embellished with gold sequins some of these being minute. The centre of the verso has a simple floral design.   A Circa 1830's or 1840's White Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture carved, pierced, gilded and silvered, both guards with a mirror inserted near to the tip. The double paper leaf has several different scenes, some with winged cherubs. To the left an elegant lady holds a single red rose and looks pensively into the distance, a similar scene to the right. The main cartouche shows a young man in his bed, a doctor and older family members present, stretching out his arms to receive a pretty young lady who appears to have just arrived in a carriage. The verso is decorated with sprays of flowers in green and gold. Contained in a card fan box with decoration to the lift-off lid. Together with A Jenny Lind or Palmette Fan, the monture of carved wood painted gold, the leaf panels in cream sparsely embroidered with gold sequins; and A Black Net Fan, embroidered with silver sequins of differing shapes and sizes.   A Colourful Mid-19th Century Lithographed Fan, the double paper leaf mounted on carved, pierced and gilded bone, the recto with three separate scenes, two featuring figures in armour. To the right, a winged Angel and a lady (Athena) wearing a helmet, speak to a young lady holding her child. Centrally, a male figure in ruby red robes and gilded armour speaks to a similar lady, several children at their feet, a baby held in the arms of the Angel and another female, Hermes and perhaps Athena above. To the left, a Queen with 3 children and another lady. The verso shows a musical gathering to the centre, and two further vignettes with couples, and small scenes all featuring musical instruments and players, the details in gold, against a very deep blue ground. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. Together with A Mid-9th Century Bone Fan, gilded and pierced, inset with tiny gold roundels, mounted with a double paper/lithographed leaf, the recto showing a King listening to music in the company of two ladies. The reserves are dark, and gilded. The recto by contrast, in pastel colours, shows a mountain landscape with pine trees and a large chalet, in front of which a boy plays with a dog.   A Mid-19th Century Bone Fan, with brightly coloured lithographed double vellum (?) leaf, the monture carved, pierced and gilded, the gorge elaborate in three shades of gold, a central floral spray surrounded by birds and butterflies. The recto shows an Alpine scene with a farmer dressed in a country smock, standing beside his loaded cart which is pulled by bullocks. Several ladies and another man and boy are present wearing regional costumes. Signed to the left F. Dandiyoor? The reserves are richly decorated in gold and at each side of the central cartouche feature portraits of elegantly dressed ladies. The verso is less decorative with a simple rural scene of distant hills and buildings with spires in a wooded area. The reserves have some gold detailing. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. Together with A Fan, with lithographic double paper leaf married to an earlier ivory monture with figures carved on the guards. The gorge is painted with sweeping floral curves of blue, yellow and lilac flowers. The recto shows men and women in Baroque costume, the men with lace collars and breeches, seated at a table covered with sumptuous table carpet playing chess. Side vignettes depict courting couples in costume, and two magnificent castles. The verso, in cream with gold, shows a courting couple by a well. Numbers appear to be printed on each side, with "2259" to the left and "J???" to the right. Guard length10.75 inches or 27.5cm (2)

  A Gothic Revival Fan, the leaf mounted on white mother-of-pearl, the monture possibly older than the hand coloured lithographed leaf. The recto shows a medieval hawking expedition, leaving and returning to a castle, with horse, dogs, handlers, and a lady and her Knight. Smaller vignettes show the bird handler with a colourful bird, and in the reserves six monks stand beneath stylised buildings with spiked architectural detail. The verso, with a central cartouche showing a musician playing to a lady seated in a throne, has reserves in gold featuring figures from the Commedia dell'arte, dancing on pillars.   An Attractive and Highly Gilded Mid-19th Century Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the deep gorge in the Spanish style showing three ladies in voluminous skirts and a gentleman in breeches, detail emphasized by differing shades of gold, and backed by thin white mother-of-pearl. To the sides, and on the guards, some piercing producing flowers and scrolling, which is picked out in blue and pink and green, giving a light and airy touch amongst the strong gilding. The narrow lithographed leaf shows a musical gathering in the garden, the ladies wearing sack back robes and one holding an open fan, another reading. The verso is finished in stronger colours and shows three women and one man gathering flowers or herbs, all wearing berets with a touch of tartan braid, the man with a kilt and sporran made from an animal's mask. The fan opens to a full half circle. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm £200 - 300

The reserves are floral. The verso shows a pair of young boys, surrounded by elaborate gold scrolling. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm.   A Large Mid-19th Century Mother-of-Pearl Fan, with substantial sticks, the monture silvered, carved and pierced, the gorge further painted with a central cartouche of a water feature, flowers, and birds in flight. The upper guard is embellished with a silver metal panel to the upper third, containing a mirror, the wide shoulders tapering into a carved plaited design for the lower third. The lower guard, with a similar metal panel, features a plaque with black background and white cameo style head in profile. The narrow double paper leaf shows a village setting with buildings in various forms, families and friends at leisure outside. The verso, with similar pastel painting to the gorge, shows more rural figures, in traditional costume. Contained in a card fan box with blue exterior and a very small label to the interior, for "J&W Milne, 126 Princess Street, Edinburgh", a crown above the wording. Guard length 11.5 inches or 29cm. Together A Large Late 19th Century Fan, the double paper leaf mounted on simple wooden sticks, lightly gilded. The recto, with bold gold background, shows three ladies relaxing in a rose arbour, one encouraging doves, another reading. The reserves feature wild flowers, a butterfly and nearby water.   A Circa 1860's Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture carved and pierced, silvered and gilded, the deep and substantial gorge sticks mounted with a narrow double paper leaf. On the recto a group of well-dressed ladies and one gentleman relax outdoors, a central group amusing a child by providing a ride on a goat. The verso shows a more tranquil scene of a young man slumbering beneath a tree, with two ladies attempting to shade him from the sun. Contained in a pink period card fan box with floral paper adhered to the lid and sides and an oval panel centrally showing a lady in period dress. Signature underneath the box for "Mrs Robt Taylor". Guard length 10.25 inches or 26cm. together with A Bone Fan, with lithographed double paper leaf, the monture carved and pierced, lightly silvered, a small oval mirror set into the upper guard. The recto shows two young ladies seated outdoors, their parasols closed, watching as a small boy plays with a dog. To each side vignettes feature couples being rowed on rivers, in one case also being serenaded, with stone buildings and distant mountains in the backgrounds. The verso features a couple with a small child, who reaches out to another lady proffering a small present. Side vignettes feature ladies in medieval costume. Both sides of the leaf are richly decorated in gold, the recto with the addition of an attractive royal blue to the reserves. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm (3) £60 - 100

The double leaf, in dark cream, shows an elegant lady in fine costume seated in a salon decorated with sumptuous furnishings, a bewigged suitor kissing her fingers, whilst a cherub hides behind a screen. The reserves feature extravagant swags of flowers and ribbons and the upper border cornucopia, being additionally embroidered with minute gold sequins to the top edge. Signed A Faugeron. Together with a cream card fan box, the inner lid with an-shaped label for "Nathalie 187 Sloane Street London; and A Later Wooden Fan, the sticks painted light grey and decorated with silvering, the double leaf cream satin to the recto, applied with cream machine lace and marabou feathers, two winged cherubs and tiny pink flowers featuring to the centre.   A 19th Century Ivory Fan, with carved and pierced 18th century monture, the sticks delicate and shaped, the gorge sticks in pairs. The double paper leaf is made to simulate vellum, and thus this fan is a marriage of two periods. The central cartouche continues the 18th century feel with a depiction of a Lady at her toilet, wearing a powdering robe as her maid attends to her wig. An elegantly dressed lady looks on, fan in hand, the boudoir finely appointed, the dressing table mirrored, and draped in silk. At both sides the reserves are finely painted with quite marvellous birds, perched on flowering branches and in flight. The verso is relatively plain with a fine gold border and central entwined initials, possibly "CD", in pink and blue, complementing the colours used on the recto. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm

  A Late 19th Century Wooden Fan, French, the monture plain black, the black silk leaf painted with a monkey, a parrot and a family of cats, the verso plain. The monkey is pulling on a chain, the end of which is looped around the parrot's leg, his free hand pulling the bird's tail feathers. The parrot in turn is biting the money's tail. A white cat observes whilst several kittens suckle from their mother and another kitten enjoys a dish of milk. Signed "A. Duhouy jeune". Together with A Small Fixed Fan, of fan shaped form, the handle of dark metal covered with beige braid, ending in a loop, the head shaped recto/verso to form a cat.   Lauronce: A Circa 1875/80 Silk Fan, printed in shades of brown and cream, depicting a solemn procession of children en route to bury a dead bird, carried along in a small chariot by a very young girl who casts sad glances behind her. A boy places a cross in the ground next to a grave. Another small boy at the back of the procession and carrying a birdcage wipes his tears with his fist. Two more children, looking serious, complete the scene, the biggest boy pulling the chariot. The verso is plain cream cotton. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm

This print on silk is known in French as "L'enterrement du petit oiseau", the burial of the little bird, after Eugène Lejeune, reproduction rights bought by the fan maker Hugot from Goupil on the 4th of August 1877 for 100 francs.   A Late Victorian Fabric Fan, mounted on black wooden sticks, with unusual gold and ice blue decoration, the cream silk leaf printed with a design of fixed and folding fans, a small central depiction of buildings (possibly a Parisian skyline) surrounded by palms, and other exotic foliage. The verso is a plain eau de nil silk satin. Guard length 12.75 inches or 32.5cm.   An Early 20th Century Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture gilded and silvered, the silk leaf backed in cream gauze. The recto is painted in subtle shades of brown through to cream, the top and side borders embroidered with tiny gold sequins, the central design being one of delicate and detailed flowers, to include lilies, roses, a parrot tulip, carnations and perhaps hellebores.   Circa 1900, An Unusual Wooden Fan, the gorge painted a striking gold and in fontange form, the black silk leaf daintily painted with colourful flowers. The verso is plain.   A Circa 1900's Ivory Fan, the monture carved, pierced and painted in gold, with the addition of tiny fragments of abalone. The gorge sticks alternate, with a central pair. The single leaf, of flesh-coloured gauze, is embroidered with gold and slightly bronze sequins in rows and columns. A yellow stone finishes the rivet. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm. Together with An Early 20th Century Bone Fan, the monture carved and pierced in interlinking ovals painted in light gold and a pale taupe.
