Click to view full image... A Pretty Circa 1900s Silk Fan, the mother-of-pearl monture dyed a deep iridescent blue, gilded, and clouté with silver. The silk leaf of subtle green shades, is overlaid with bi-colour ribbon, embroidered in green silk thread, with silver sequins in knots and swags. Unusually, an inner panel, and the bodies of the butterflies, are cut away and replaced with net, the whole leaf being backed with cream gauze. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm

A Shocking Pink (à la Schiaparelli) Fan, the silk leaf mounted on horn or resin sticks, carved and pierced at the top, gilded with a leaf design, and being further shaped attractively at the shoulder, making floral shapes which are emphasised on the gorge with gilding. The leaf, a gold net overlaid with bright pink silk, is extensively embroidered with tiny gold and silver sequins, the silk cut away to form interlinked scrolls. Unusually, the top section is embroidered in a lattice in pink embroidery silk. Together with a cream card fan box with pale silk lining. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm (2) £180 - 300

  A Late 19th/Early 20th Century Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture with light silvered decoration to include a butterfly on the tip of the upper guard. The yellow organdie leaf is overlaid with olive green silk, cut away in regular sections to reveal the organdie, these sections bordered with gold sequins. Elsewhere the silk is embroidered with star shaped gold sequins with the addition of silver sequin swags, other silver spangles in larger and more interesting shapes within the upper panels. Together with a card fan box covered and lined in cream silk, god initials to the exterior, probably M G, and marked inside the lid, in gold, for Ate Buissot, Fabrique D'Eventails, rue de Clery 25 (Paris).   A Circa 1900 White Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the heavy monture clouté in silver in regular designs. The cream gauze, backed with thin cream gauze, is embroidered with swirls of silver sequins of differing sizes, the sequins decreasing in size as the swirl size decreases. The inner sequins are flower shaped. Rope effect silver metal loop. Contained in a card fan box with leather effect exterior, marked for Benjamin Lachelin Eventailliste 32 Avenue de L'Opera, Paris. The yellow net leaf is overlaid with cream silk, cut away to create a design of scrolling and leaves, the edges embroidered with tiny gold sequins, further flowers and leaves created with the use of spangles of differing shapes. Some metal thread embroidery amongst the sequins and finely along the very top border. Marked for Duvelleroy on the verso, and on the box lid interior.   Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary, June 22nd 1911: A Dainty Sequin Fan, the monture of white mother-of-pearl, lightly clouté, the double leaf of cream gauze with some blue/grey overlay in places, the whole embroidered with sequins of differing shapes. Guard length 8 inches or 20cm. Together with a card fan box bearing the motto of the Grosvenor Hotel Victoria, London, a lion bearing a standard with the initial "G", and the indication that it was to commemorate the Coronation in 1911.   An Edwardian Fan, the monture lightly carved and gilded, the design on gorge and guards matching, the lattice work further embellished with tiny gold dots in different shades. The cream gauze leaf is mounted à l'Anglaise and overlaid with cream machine lace, the top border slightly proud so that some lace detail can be seen. The central section is painted with colourful birds perched on a flowering branch, to the left a bird in flight, to the right a spray of daisies, tiny gold sequins scattered here and there and silver sequins follow lines formed from couched gold metal thread.   Winter Skaters: A Large Late 19th Century Pierced Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the double vellum leaf painted with a rural scene of the popular winter pastime of ice skating, with all its accidents and accomplishments. Wrapped up warmly against the cold, a lady enjoys being pushed on the ice in a velvet and gilt shaped sledge, her aid dressed in finery, a small dog enjoying the fun. Other cloaked or uniformed gentlemen skate, one with his lady wearing an ornate à la polonaise silk gown. To the right of the frozen pond a stile is painted with the name of the artist, Gustave David. The recto painted with a border and scrolling central initials.   Oiseaux Exotiques: An Early 20th Century Bone Fan, retailed by Duvelleroy, and signed on the verso. The double silk leaf is embroidered with minute gold sequins, these forming a classical top and side border, further panels forming columns which support painted urns of roses. Three folds between each column are painted with flowers and foliage, also embellished with sequins, and centrally an exotic and colourful bird. Decoration and slight carving to the gorge and guards repeat this floral theme with the addition of musical instruments. The rivet is finished with diamanté and a tiny loop for ribbon. The fine cream silk on the verso is painted with roses and foliage. Signed to the left. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm.   A Large Late 19th Century Wooden Fan, with a very light and airy appearance, the monture painted cream, the wood carved and pierced to leave spaces into which are placed tiny gold stars, the gorge sticks continuing up over the cream gauze leaf à la Sultane. The gauze is further embellished with gold metal thread, and alternate folds have detailed portraits of ladies with different 18th century hairstyles and hats. The verso is plain.   An Early 20th Century Bone Fan, lightly pierced in a regular design, and mounted with a double paper leaf. Central to the recto, two ladies in Regency costume, carrying fans, engage in conversation with a young man, whilst to each side further young ladies carrying folding fans take their rest and enjoy nature. The scenes are bordered with scrolling flowers which are highlighted with tiny green and bronze sequins. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm.   An Early 20th Century Fan, the tortoiseshell monture plain but with attractive mottling. The double leaf, silk to the recto and cotton to the verso, features a central vignette of a suitor attempting to impress his chosen lady, who is seated on a bench and listening politely. Two side vignettes feature gardens, one in the Spring with early flowers, the other in Winter with birds in the skies. The borders and reserves are embroidered with tiny gold and silver sequins, serving to emphasise the paintings and additional features of floral baskets. Guard length 8.75 inches or 22cm. The verso shows a piper playing for a strolling couple; and A Third Paper Fan, mounted on wooden sticks, the recto showing several finely dressed older children strolling in a park by a stone fountain, perhaps in the early days of courtship, not an adult in sight!   A 20th Century Advertising Fan for "Biere Du Lion", the double paper leaf in shaped fontange form mounted on basic wooden sticks, the recto showing a rather portly drinker holding a huge tankard of frothing beer, his expression one of glee. The recto repeats advertising for the brand. Together with A Bone Fan Advertising Martell Cognac, the recto printed with 18th century gentlefolk picnicking in the countryside, having arrived by horse drawn carriage, the recto plain; A Third Fan Advertises Restaurant Frascati; and A Further Paper Fan Advertises "Maire Café Restaurant Glacier", the recto printed in soft pinks and depicting a wealthy lady holding an open fan accompanied by her Beau, and another couple taking a stroll, the lady being escorted by a soldier in uniform, possibly a Hussar.   An Advertising Fan by Georges Redon. The French artist (1869-1943) famous for his Art Nouveaux poster work and magazine illustrations, also created a series of humorous fan leaves, this being an example used as advertising for the Carlton Hotel and Restaurant London, depicting a small dog keeping a watchful eye on advances being made towards his mistress by a gentleman with perhaps doubtful intent. Together with A 20th Century Fan, advertising the Pavilion Royale, Bois de Boulogne, the double paper leaf mounted on lightly decorated wooden sticks, the leaf depicting a young maid attempting to evade the advances of a suitor but hampered by grape vines in her path, the reserves with portraits of young and elegant ladies. The verso bears the attribution of P. Tete Evantailliste; and An Advertising Fan, for "Grands Magazins de Nouveautés Les Fils de M. Cieuzel et Cie Le Caire", an imposing store building and showing fashionable ladies walking past, motor cars on the street, circa 1900. Together with A Shaped Paper Fan Adverting The "May Fair Hotel" and printed with three vignettes in pink and blue, the central study that of perhaps Marie Antoinette, the side vignettes both showing cherubs at play; and An Advertising Fan For "The Midland Hotel Restaurant", the double paper leaf mounted on simple sticks, the recto printed in green and gold on cream and showing two social levels of courting couples.   A Good American Advertising Fan, early 20th century, for the Café Des Beaux-Arts In New York and the Chateau Des Beaux-Arts, Huntington, NY State, the strongly coloured recto, with details in gold, features centrally a rural scene with a traveller on a path approaching a hilltop village, to the left a classical scene of lovers, possibly Venus and Mars, with Cupid in attendance, and to the right an elegant lady in fine 18th century dress, holding a fan, her companion and two gentlemen in attendance. The verso is equally detailed, with a central cartouche of a couple seated in an elegant wood panelled dining room, the lady in the fine dress of the early 1900's, the cigar-smoking gentleman proffering a gift across the table. Printed by Buissot Eventails with the attribution on both sides. Together with A Fan Advertising the Midland Hotel Restaurant, the double paper leaf printed on the recto with two romantic vignettes showing classical couples, the reserves brightly coloured in orange and gold; and A Third Fan, the leaf not bearing advertising, the name "Princes" etched on the upper guard, the double paper leaf mounted on lightly decorated wooden sticks, depicting a young maid attempting to evade the advances of a suitor but hampered by grape vines in her path, the reserves with portraits of elegant ladies, the verso decorated with classical designs and noted "??   A Lachelin Advertising Fan for Restaurant Henry, the paper leaf mounted à l'Anglaise on wooden sticks, showing an elegant lady in 18th century robes with engageantes, admiring a fan being proffered by a bewigged young gentleman, to his left a vendor with a tray containing slim boxes, presumably holding fans. The recto features the verse/poem written in 18th century French, "Au milieu des chaleurs extremes, Heureux d'amufer vos loifirs, Je ne veux pres de vous, Je ne veux pres de vous qu'appeler les zéphirs, Les amours y viendront d'eux memes" (Quatrain XVIII), and is further annotated "Simu-Aquarelle Devambez". The verso is printed "Eventail B Lachelin, Paris, 32 Avenue de L'Opera". Together with A 1902 Advertising Fan for the Hotel De Paris - Monte Carlo, Signed L Vallet 1902, further attribution to "Devambez Paris ", the double paper leaf mounted on plain wooden sticks.   A Vibrant Late 19th Century Wooden Fan, the monture painted black, the double black silk leaf painted each side with figures in the Burmese fashion, seemingly engaged in ceremonial dancing. The recto, of shiny silk satin, shows a whole host of figures in decorative ceremonial dress, ready to dance and provide other entertainment for an important couple, seated on a throne at the centre top of the leaf, and shaded by a parasol. The verso, in a thinner, matt silk, shows three lady dancers, accompanied by musicians and a younger male, amongst exotic flowering trees. Guard length 14.75 inches or 37.5cm
